Voters Toss a 0-for

Baseball writers elected no one to the Hall of Fame this year for the first time in 16 years. I understand the likes of Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, Sosa and Palmeiro not getting elected -- the stink of alleged or admitted PED still hangs over them -- but to not elect other Hall-worthy players such as Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Edgar Martinez and Curt Schilling was very surprising.

I have no interest in trying to make the Hall of Fame case for those players. There's been plenty of ink spilled already in that regard. What does interest me, however, is the possible message this 0-fer sent. Was this a message that anyone who played in the steroid-era is irrevocably tainted? Was this a statement about what the clean players didn't do, as much as what the dirty players did do? Perhaps the voters just didn't believe any of the players were worthy this time around?

But no matter what message or messages the writers did or did not send, the end result is bad for everyone. Baseball has to get a handle on this because the PED issue isn't going away any time soon. What are the writers going to do next year when 2 sure-fire Hall of Famers in Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux show up on the ballot?
