Romney's 5 Policy Lies
During his acceptance speech, Mitt Romney stated 5 policy goals if he's elected President. He will not achieve a single one of them.
1. By 2020, North America will be energy independent by taking full advantage of our oil, our coal, our gas, our nuclear, and renewables.
Why don't people understand that when it comes to oil (at least), there is no such thing as energy independence? It's a global market subject to global supply and demand. Even if we develop other means of energy, oil is not going anywhere and Mitt knows it.
2. We will give our fellow citizens the skills they need for the jobs of today and the careers of tomorrow. When it comes to the school your child will attend, every parent should have a choice, and every child should have a chance.
A common platitude completely beyond his control. Schools are (and should be) controlled at the local level. Hence, such a policy would have to be instituted at that level. Any federal law Romney might try to get passed would be shot down by the Supreme Court for being wildly unconstitutional. Had he noted that he intends to close the Dept of Education, then we could talk, but as it stands, that's a promise he can't fill, and he knows it.
3. We will make trade work for America by forging new trade agreements, and when nations cheat in trade, there will be unmistakable consequences.
Forging new trade agreements is an area the current President has failed at miserably, so this would be a welcome change, however I'm leery about "when nations cheat in trade" and "unmistakable consequences." My guess is he's alluding to claims of currency manipulation by China, something he's aware the US does with alarming regularity nowadays. I'm not sure what he thinks those unmistakable consequences would be since we rely on other countries to finance our debt spending not exactly putting us in a position of strength.
4. To assure every entrepreneur and every job creator that their investments in America will not vanish, as have those in Greece. We will cut the deficit and put America on track to a balanced budget.
This is his biggest lie of all, and typical political double-speak. The reality is if you want to move the needle on the federal budget, you have to address Medicare, Social Security and military spending. Romney said Obama's $710B in cuts in Medicare will hurt seniors and job creation, so apparently we can't cut that. He doesn't want any senior to fear the security of their retirement, so I guess that takes Social Security off the table. And lastly, Mitt blasted the President for reductions in future increases (aka "cuts" in D.C.-speak) in military spending as hurtful to both jobs and national security, so we can't cut that either. Good luck touching the deficit or putting us on any kind of path to fiscal sanity with that approach.
5. We will champion small businesses, America's engine of job growth. That means reducing taxes on business, not raising them. It means simplifying and modernizing the regulations that hurt small businesses the most, and it means we must rein in skyrocketing cost of health care by repealing and replacing Obamacare.
All I read there was blah blah blah, crony capitalism. When we "champion" one group, that's political speak for loan guarantees and other tax payer funded subsidies, something that Romney should be fighting against. Oh and "repealing ObamaCare", please say hello to "closing Guantanamo Bay". Did you guys know you're twins? Romney is using ObamaCare as a rallying cry for his supporters just as Obama used Gitmo for his base in 2008. And don't look now, but Gitmo is still open.
Romney is off to a glowing start, isn't he? He can't even get through a party nomination speech without filling it full of lies, half-truths and platitudes. I guess that makes him a typical politician then, doesn't it?
