German producer Peter Pahn makes his debut on Teenage Mutants’ Tragedie with a new track titled “Rave Revival”. An uplifting techno-pride and trancy original cut to be included in the EP “Shattered Pieces VA” where are also participating Soolver and ANDATA.

The full pack will be officially dropped this March 19 on Spotify (one week later on Beatport and definitely on April 9 in all digital stores) but know what, we premiere the optimistic “Rave Revival” for you today, we even talked a bit with the artist to know more about him and his life and work.

Hi Peter, thanks for taking the time to speak to us. Can you tell us where you are at the moment and how you have been finding these strange times we find ourselves in?

Hello Nude / Techno, it is a pleasure to have the opportunity to likewise speak with you.

I’m living in Frankfurt am Main, in Germany. Professionally, I continue my work as a civil engineer. I enjoy my work; I’m good at it and it pays my bills. However, my real passion is Music. After my day job, I go to my studio. Between working and producing, I try to escape out into Nature and keep myself healthy with sports and good food.

What are the main things (skills in production, your career as a DJ …) we should know about Peter Pahn? By the way, is that your real name? If not, what’s the story behind it?

Before producing, I always had a strong passion for techno and performing. After solidifying my skills in DJ’ing, I moved myself into the natural progression into producing.

The atmosphere of raving continues to my first love. I love to be on the dancefloor equally to how I love to be behind the decks. I live to be interacting with the crowd. Escalating and dancing in the front row. I merge with the audience.

Recently I’ve been focused on producing; this has been both challenging and rewarding; there is a particular unique satisfaction making an expression of yourself in the form of a track that other people can enjoy. This had led me on many personal development paths within my personal life. Technically, I produce using Ableton and preferably with the big bundle from plugin alliance.

PETER PAHN is not my real name. It’s a mix with my real name and with the fairy-tale character. It’s reflecting with the techno world – going in the club – leaving in the boring adult world, to forget everything that burdens you, to switch off.

And entering the club like in the fairy-tale only fun and nice people.

How would you define your sound and how do you stay focused while locked in the recording studio?

I would describe my sound as powerful, energetic, and positive.

The goal for me is always to create a positive energy – the listeners of my music should feel fun and smile.

The track we’re premiering today in 3 words…

As mentioned above: Powerful, energetic, and positive.

Can you tell our readers more about your relationship with Teenage Mutants and Tragedie label?

We come from the same beautiful city “Mainz”. That’s where we got to know and appreciate each other. Since two years PETER PAHN is a part of Teenage Mutants “Wir Sind Verboten” – booking agency, which is in cooperation with miracle management Barcelona.

A friendship has been built up over the years, which was intensified on a trip to the USA last year.

How is for you releasing new music in the midst of the strange time we’re living in…?

For me, it’s just perfect to balance things out, because you can’t do anything and I’m always at home, so I try to turn the negative situation into positive energy and also to educate myself musically. That’s why I spend every free second in the studio so that at the end of this time I can’t reproach myself for not having used it wisely. That’s why I stay true to my release plan.

For me as a newcomer, it is also very important that I use the time and step on the gas! I will do that; this is not the last time you will hear from PETER PAHN.

Anything else you’d like to add and/or any positive vibes to share with us?

Just want to say thanks for all the support I get from you, my family and friends. Negativity starts in the mind. No matter what happens, we can mentally transform negative energy into positive energy.

Stay healthy and focused. Spend time in and connecting with nature.

Listen to ‘Rave Revival’ above and grab it on Beatport.

UMEK’s label 1605 kickstarts the new year with an EP from German duo Teenage Mutants who have previously released their techno tracks on the likes of Tronic, Terminal M, Senso Sounds and Noir Music.

Since it’s relaunch, 1605 has been focused exclusively towards UMEK’s own tracks. This release is a statement of intent showing what’s planned for 2020, as the label is also a platform that supports the artists played in the DJ sets of the label owner.

Teenage Mutants travel the world playing gigs across Europe, Asia, USA and South America. They have recently been taking their tracks down a darker more hard-hitting style, with a focus on the peak time style of techno showcased on this release. Alongside the two originals there is also a remix from Heerhorst, who is an up and coming German talent already making waves with his notable tracks and remixes on Octopus, Riot Recordings, Set About and Stil Vor Talent.

For our premiere via NUDE, Heerhorst reworks “Return”. Heerhorst adds bursts of acid and a bassline which tears out the speakers. Keeping the euphoric elements, but adding extra atmosphere to give the tracks a darker more menacing sound, this version is great for those who prefer things a little more sinister.

Check out Heerhorst remix below and grab a copy here.

Cinematic and expansive dark melodic techno music on the latest offering from Fall From Grace Records.

Teenage Mutants have written a wonderfully rich composition entitled ‘Exit’ – undulating synths and an airy midsection really allow this record a huge amount of depth in the recording. It is an expertly crafted piece of melodic moody techno music and the club sensibilities on this are fantastic.

On the B Side is our debut transmission from the label boss Glenn Morrison with a striking rendition of ‘Exit’ – ominous pads and new melodies compliment the old motifs in the record and it has a very Afterlife / Tale of Us hypnotic sway to it.

Check it out below…

Magic Anthem EP - Suara.jpgLabel: SuaraScore: 8/10

The rise and rise of Suara, as a label has been almost wholly dependent on their quality, yet accessible stance on techno, tech-house and house. What they do, they do very well indeed, and consistently too. What falls outside of their majority genres is pretty much an anomaly, but just occasionally such anomalies throw up serious records, the kind of tunes that are seeking attention and whether you like it or not, are destined to be noticed. Records such as Teenage Mutants & Purple Disco Machine’s The Path, which was a huge summer hit this year and one of the top Shazamed tracked in Ibiza.

The Teenage Mutants are back with another anomaly, an EP of two tracks that are diametrically opposed; the first deep and melodic and the second party-up-for-it. Perhaps the key to understanding the difference in approaches is to understand that both tracks are collaborations with EdOne & Bodden and the other with Lars Mosten.

Anthem (with EdOne & Bodden) is a deep, throbbing slice of techno with lush female vocal snippets that is sure to strike a chord with those who love the kind of quality that Suara is known. The level of production is exceptional, soaring pads, tinkling percussion, detailed ambients and a bassline that growls like a wounded bear. Combined with the melody and accessibility of the vocal, the chugging bassline and layered arrangement you could easily see this being a deeper dancefloor mainstay for some time.

Ironically the anthem of the package is Magic, a rip-roaring, cheeky nu-discoish cut based around the ever-popular Jimmy Bo Horn Spank sample and a male vocal that sounds like it could have come from Shorty Long’s Motown classic Function at the Junction. If you’re looking for another ‘The Path’ you’re not going to get it exactly but Magic isn’t far off with its infectious riff and catchy vocal set to the backdrop of house beats and nu-disco bassline. Considering the elements are pretty high-octane Teenage Mutants and Lars Molson do a great job of keeping the monster groove in check without it crossing over into a more suspect territory. All in all Magic is a great fun, whoop inducing slice of nu-disco crossover that’ll suit the bar, club pool and probably your i-pod/phone too. Another summer anthem? Probably. Now where did we put that summer?

5 Years is a long time, especially in electronic music, where every passing day seems to stir up new sounds and trends. One label that continues to tailor its sound to the contemporary market place is Andre Crom’s OFF, and to give the prolific label their dues, they’re not half bad at doing so either.

On 5 Years of OFF, the German labels serves up 4 new slamming tracks, with each one as effective and delectable as the next. The trio of Andre Crom, Chi Thanh and Kevin Knapp team up for the first such offering, with the wonderful ”While You Stand” indicative of the sort of track that OFF has relied on to make the floors move over the years. Again, hip-hop plays its role, and it results in a majestic track that gets us off to a flying start.

Leftwing & Kody and Kruse & Nuernberg is an unusual pairing on paper, but to the trained ear it’s a delicious one, with ”Turning” a really clever number that’s raise eyebrows wherever it’s unleashed. Robosonic & Mat.Joe continue the unlikely duos vibe on ”You On You”, a highly-spirited number whereby heavy bass and watertight grooves abound. Purple Disco Machine & Teenage Mutants, both of whom have played big roles in OFF’s recent success, combine for the finale, with ”Little Treehouse” a most fitting swansong. There’s not much left to say here save for the fact that this is vintage OFF. After 5 years of hits, more of the same is no bad thing.

You have a huge show in London coming up at Egg, what is it about London that really wows you?

London always gives me a buzz. The city is so intense, so fast-paced and stimulating. If the weather was better, I could imagine to move there from Berlin, but I’ve already decided that my next home will need to have some more sun!

I also see you have some huge American dates on route, what are you looking forward to the most?

When I was growing up I always wanted to see the world, so it’s exciting for me that nowadays this wish becomes true; and I get to see so many diverse and interesting places all over. South America is particularly interesting to me as it has so many beautiful landscapes to check out, and it feels culturally quite different to Europe. The people I met there are very hospitable, and the atmospheres on the parties were always amazing.

I’m mostly looking forward to DJing at some beach parties, which is something I haven’t done so much of yet. And of course, BPM festival. I went for the first time in January 2013 and it was really great to make contacts and have some wild parties with old and new friends. Ultimately, I look forward to make all my Berlin friends hate me while posting beautiful pictures with me hanging out on a beach while they have to suffer Berlin’s winter darkness!

Can you give us an insight into your favourite tracks right now?

My taste has always been eclectic, right now I am getting back into toolish tracks for my DJ sets. Lately I have been getting booked to slightly bigger clubs and festivals, and for those you cannot go too deep, you need to maintain a certain energy level. For example, the upcoming Jay Lumen EP on OFF has a killer track called “Nobody” that’s based on a massive bassline and a tight jacking groove (out on OFF in early october). Later in the night I love to play a bit more wasted music. I really love Deetron for that time, or a classic like “PetterSome Polyphony“. What really touches me emotionally is a lot of what Innervisions do. Also, with my future personal productions I want to incorporate some elements of indie pop but these tracks are not always easy to mix into your sets and you need to drop them at the right moment.

Finally, if you have one track that inspired you the most in what you’re doing today, what would that be?

Daft Punk’sAround The World“. Of course, I don’t play this anymore, but when I heard it for the first time it really blew my mind. It’s simple but not stupid, catchy but not cheesy, and reduced on its essence. It is an underground track, but because it’s so good it crossed over from the underground into the radio and became popular with a lot more people. These are qualities which are very important to me for my own productions, the music I sign for OFF, and most of the stuff I play.

Hey Andre, tell us about your new release with Teenage Mutants, what’s the vibe behind the EP?

It’s a deep groover based on a massive bassline, catchy synths and a magical vocal, with a positive vibe…the kind of track that works as well on a beach bar as it does in a club at 3 a.m.

What was the process like in recording a track with other people?

Kris (Teenage Mutants) and I started the project, and then I finished with together with my engineer as we live in different cities. I like this way of working as it’s very efficient, often more than if you sit in the studio with 2 people at once, with one person on the computer and the other one just giving feedback and suggestions. I find that can become a bit boring and hinder the process.

OFF Recordings has really blown up over the past year. What do you think the key has been to the success of the label?

Simple: we deliver the BOMBS!

To be more precise, OFF is very much focused towards the DJs; you can almost buy our tracks blind and be sure that they will rock the dance floor. I just sign the music which I like to play myself on the dance floor, and luckily, a lot of people seem to share my taste. Another reason why the label has become so successful (especially since beginning of 2012) is because after you release a few strong EP’s in a row, as we did in early 2012, you get sent better demos sent by more well-known producers. So it becomes a lot easier to raise the standard of your music once you’re a bit more known.

Another important reason for the raised awareness in the past 18 months is that besides releasing music from well-known guest artists, we gathered some core acts, that now transport our image such as Robosonic, Teenage Mutants, Mat.Joe, Leftwing & Kody, myself, and a few more.

What can you tell us about the next releases on the label?

We have really excellent tracks coming; besides new stuff from our above mentioned core acts there will be guest releases by Betoko, Jay Lumen, Pleasurekraft, Darius Syrossian and more. Musically, we’re moving a bit away from the nu-disco/pop/sample-heavy style that we’ve featured in our releases of the first half of 2013 and we’ll be focusing more in either more toolish, very clubby sounds, or musically really interesting and outstanding tracks with original vocals.

You’re very popular on Beatport. A lot of people criticize the website for either favouring artists or charting popular artists and tracks because of who they are. What’s your take on the site?

Which record shop does not showcase some artists more than others? If you go to an underground vinyl store like Hardwax in Berlin, you will also find some releases placed prominently on display. The point is to not only feature the “safe bets” that will be big sellers for sure; but also to present some more underground/experimental bits. It’s a bit like running a label, of course you need some bombs that everybody will play and chart and buy, but you also need to work on your image by showcasing fresh and original things.

What I like about Beatport as well is, that – opposed to what many people believe – it’s not possible to buy a feature. You can tell your contact at Beatport “check this out, I think this track has a lot of potential” – but it’s their decision in the end what does get a feature, which mainly depends on the music.

Indeed, staunch fans of the label are sure to remember the last time this dynamic duo came together, with ”Hangin On” a track that was very much beneficial for all parties. The track in question here, however, is no less emphatic, with its swelling synths, bubbly bass and its vague, crossover sound one that’s sure to prove a winner with punters of many different musical leanings. Whisper it…but Crom and Teenage Mutants might just have another club smash on their hands…
