Almost 20 years to the day that the original ‘Salsoul Nugget (If You Wanna)’ was released into the world, the acclaimed UK duo M&S (Ricky Morrison and Fran Sidoli), return to celebrate the anniversary of the early noughties classic.
To mark the occasion, the duo went back in the studio and recreated and remastered the record completely – see if you can spot the difference! Together with Tinted Records, today M&S further announce two very special remixes from dance music royalty – Mighty Mouse and Mark Knight.
With the new mixes bringing the acclaimed record into the 2020s, it’s time for a whole new generation to fall in love with the groove-laden beats that took the world by storm and catapulted the single to #1 on the UK dance charts, #6 on the UK singles chart, and #21 on the US Billboard Chart.
Ricky and Fran of M&S share their excitement, “Yes Yes Yes! Wow! We are beyond excited! We can’t believe it’s been 20 years since the release of Salsoul Nugget! Thank you so much to Archie and the Central Station Records team for bringing it back to life with our new remasters for 2021 and stunning remixes from Mr Mark Knight and the Mighty Mighty Mouse both giving a new edge to our ‘Classic’. 20 years and well worth the wait! Here’s hoping you agree also. Thank you so much for the support. We love you and keep on dancin!”
First up to the plate is none other than UK producer, and peer in many ways to M&S, Mighty Mouse. With a long-standing career, the acclaimed producer has had a resurgence in recent years, with the release of his mammoth single ‘The Spirit’, released on Glitterbox. The record became a favourite the world over, becoming Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record In The World’ on BBC Radio 1, with extensive touring across Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Mighty Mouse focuses on the instrumentation, going back to the original sample, amplifying it with bright and upbeat disco vibes whilst incorporating big brass moments.
Mighty Mouse said “Such a treat to be able to remix a classic like this, and even more so because it’s one of my favourite house tracks ever. I took it in a slightly more disco direction whilst trying to keep the flavour of the original. And I love how it turned out!”
Divulging the details on his own process he shares, “As soon as I was asked to do the remix, I instantly had an idea. It’s not often classics like this come up but I knew immediately I wanted to take it in a more disco direction. So I started to see if I could find a way to chop up the sample slightly differently from the original and hold out on the main groove until after the main breakdown, teasing the main groove throughout the track. I wanted to bring out the chorus a bit more so added Rhodes and synth lines to open it up more, then it all went a bit psychedelic in the breakdown which I felt added a slightly different dimension to it. And of courses it NEEDED a huge breakdown.”
