Reviewed: HØST ‘Survive’ EP

On the newly founded label of Sherelle and Naina, Hooversound Recordings, after a sensational debut release of Hyroglifics and Sinistarr and a heavy EP by Deft, HØST is now putting on a lot more pressure with his ‘Survive EP’. In addition, it goes into yet unexplored BPM fields for the young imprint.

The bass enthusiast delivers a good performance with two creamy tunes around 135-140bpm. On top of that, there’s a remix by the man of the hour, Om Unit. HØST himself started producing at the age of 13. Since then he has put his dark alien sound into various genres on the Noisia labels, Saturate Records or Aufect Recordings for instance.

With title track ‘Survive’ HØST mixes elements from Jungle and similar powerful genres like Footwork. The result is a laid-back madness in beat form enriched with a pinch of Hip Hop. It pushes and presses at every corner which eagerly contributes to the dense atmosphere. ‘3D Passive’ comes in more cinematic. Here everything builds up to a breathing and stumbling drop that stretches out in all directions and simply rolls over you. Simple as that. There is no escape. Towards the end, some calmness enters the chaotic soundscape, well-deserved relaxation! Big Daddy Om Unit flips the script and puts ‘Survive’ on a BPM diet. At about 80bpm, shaken not stirred, he gets 1. more out of the vocal stuff, 2. the Footwork feeling comes through a lot more and 3. he simply blows everything away with his work on the breaks. Massive remix!

HØST did everything right with this selection for Hooversound and getting Om Unit onboard really paid off. Besides, the former continuously delivers hot shit on his Bandcamp profile so you better get looking! So there’s only one question left: what wild stuff do Sherelle and Naina have in store for Hooversound next?!
