German sensation Karla Blum delivers her debut EP for Ramon Tapia’s seminal Say What?.
Coming off the back of an exciting year, the Berlin native has had weekly club & festival appearances all summer around the country and beyond including Ritter Butzke, Colognes iconic ‘Odonien’ and Pratersauna Vienna, rubbing shoulders with Deborah DeLuca, Marika Rossa and Victor Ruiz among others, and festival such as Pavoia, SonneMondSterne, where she opened the event. Turning to production for the first time, that steely determination and razor-sharp focus has been distilled into two powerful original tracks with a star-studded remix from Oliver Huntemann and André Winter.
First up, the title track ‘Something Unreal’ bolts from the gate with undulating bass and solid warehouse kicks. Rave stabs and a familiar ‘80s vocal refrain join the scattergun percussions to ramp up the energy into the main break, where that vocal develops. A solid introduction into what this exciting new artist is all about
Keeping up the pressure with an overdriven tribal groove, ‘I Am Here’ is a proper statement of intent. Melodics add to the drama as shakers and movie soundtrack sweeps up the ante. Dropping into an epic, ambient break with spoken female vocals, the track takes a welcomed left turn before returning to the stomp of tech tribal drums
On the remix tip, German legends André Winter and Oliver Huntemann reimagine ‘Something Unreal’ with a warm driving Giorgio Moroder-esque bass and sparse percussion. Keeping the melodic elements and building the groove around them, the track takes on a peak time guise for those essential heads down, find your spot, dance like no-ones watching moments
If 2022 is anything to go by, Karla Blum is on the verge of blowing the roof off an event near you very soon. She’s Berlin’s most exciting export since Tesla!
