Boundary Brighton Festival is back this Saturday, September 28th, 2024, bringing its most extensive lineup ever to the iconic Stanmer Park. From House to Drum & Bass, Jungle to Garage, the one-day festival promises to deliver a sonic journey across four stages hosted by Brighton’s finest collectives. Heavyweights like Wilkinson, Hedex, Denis Sulta, and Eliza Rose are set to take the crowd on a ride, with thrilling extras like funfair rides, food trucks, and pop-up bars adding to the festival atmosphere.

Amidst this incredible lineup, we’re excited to sit down with IMANU—an artist whose unique fusion of Drum & Bass, experimental beats, and electronic soundscapes has made him one of the most innovative names today. Known for pushing boundaries, IMANU is gearing up to deliver an unforgettable performance at Boundary Brighton. Ahead of his set, we catch up with him to talk about his musical evolution and what he’s got in store for the festival and dig a little deeper into the life and times of one of the scene’s most intriguing talents.

What’s the story behind your stage name, IMANU?

It comes from my middle name, Immanuel! I wanted it to sound and feel more personal than a moniker.

You used to release music under the name Signal. How has your musical journey evolved since transitioning to IMANU, and what inspired the shift in your artistic direction and sound?

I feel like I’ve let go of many boundaries, and found a sound more true to myself. I was inspired by many artists who just do not seem to care about what genre or sound they’re perceived as because everything they make is them

How do you balance maintaining your signature sound while pushing boundaries in electronic music?

Pushing boundaries is my signature sound.

You’re performing at Boundary Brighton Festival this weekend. What can fans expect from your set?

As it’s a B2B with The Caracal Project, a lot of our music, collaborations we’ve done, and a bit of fun stuff! Our B2B sets are usually a bit less serious than our solo performances.

You’ve produced a lot of music with The Caracal Project and played shows together in recent years. Tell us a bit about your relationship.

Someone I met through the internet, like honestly most of my current friends! Good friendship leads to good studio sessions, and thus we created good music.

Your productions cover many different genres. One of the genres you’re best known for is DnB. How do you see the Drum and Bass scene evolving, and where do you fit into that landscape?

I don’t really feel like I fit in the scene as it is right now, but I’m very okay with that.

What’s the most challenging aspect of producing electronic music for you?

I’m not very good at mixing vocals, so I just have someone else do that for me instead 😀

How do you stay inspired and avoid creative burnout?

I listen to a ton of varied music, and watch videos on music theory very often. Experimenting with the things I’m taught in the realms of the stuff I listen to often leads to me coming up with ideas to use in my own.

What advice would you give aspiring producers looking to make their mark in the electronic music scene?

Be different.

Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or releases you’re excited about?

I’ve got a big string of music coming out soon! Very excited for it 🙂

You can catch IMANU at Boundary Brighton Festival this weekend alongside a heavyweight lineup of dance music’s finest names. For set times and more info, follow Boundary Brighton on social media or visit https://www.boundarybrighton.com

Boundary Brighton Festival (28th September at Stanmer Park in Brighton) has launched a ‘Pay What You Can Afford’ initiative. For one week only (14th – 21st August), Boundary aims to give back to the community that helped it become Brighton’s biggest electronic music festival, in particular 18 – 24 year-olds forced to cut back on going out due to the cost-of-living crisis.

Boundary will allocate 1,000 tickets to this campaign and festival-goers can buy up to two each at whatever price they can afford, starting from just £10 per ticket.

Boundary Brighton will donate 25% of each ticket sale from this new initiative to its charity partner, Starr Trust, helping it to continue its vital mission to empower young people in the region.

Over 100 festivals have been forced to cancel this year with many others reducing capacity or cutting back on production. Despite six sold-out events in the past seven years, Boundary observes the financial challenges facing the industry. However, instead of cutting costs, it plans to take a positive approach, using the ‘Pay What You Can Afford’ initiative to give back to its community and help deliver the festival to its usual high standards.

As many young people struggle with the cost-of-living crisis, this initiative ensures that the acknowledged, positive impact of live music events and socialising on mental health is not limited just to those who can afford it.

With a lineup including Wilkinson, Songer, K Motionz, Flowdan, Harriet Jaxxon, Denis Sulta, Joy (Anonymous), Ewan McVicar, Eliza Rose, Friction, Serum, Sota, Badger and many more, Boundary Brighton will be a date on the calendar that ticket holders can look forward to.

Boundary also recognises the support of those who have already bought tickets for this year’s event and loyalty tickets will be made available after the festival. Boundary also asks those who can afford standard tickets to show their support for the festival and the live music industry by purchasing these and not using the ‘Pay What You Can Afford’ option.

Brighton is home to the Boundary team and the festival has a deep connection to the community, supporting various organisations throughout the year. Alongside the Starr Trust, Boundary is also partnering with Brighton Uni Student Union for 2024, as well as Tickets For Good which provides free and heavily discounted tickets to NHS staff, NHS students, and NHS contractors.

Local electronic music artists and promoters also benefit from support from Boundary Brighton with local venues hosting stages and playing a pivotal role in curating lineups of the most exciting local talent. Boundary actively promotes stage partners’ events, celebrates their achievements, and helps build their communities throughout the year.

The vital support received to date has helped Boundary move forward this year despite a challenging environment. The launch of the ‘Pay What You Can Afford’ initiative sees the festival give back with thanks.

Tickets are available from https://bit.ly/BoundaryPWYCA.

Saturday 28th September marked the date for Boundary Festival 2019 in Brighton. Nestled between the University of Sussex and University of Brighton’s student accommodation on the South Downs of Sussex, the location was also a stone’s throw from the Amex Stadium; home to Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. This was their 4th outing with the last three years of the festival having been hailed as a thriving success…this year was no exception.

Headlining the ‘SuperCharged’ Main Stage on the day, were the infamous Chase & Status, with support from Andy C, Wilkinson, My Nu Leng, Dread MC, Holy Goof, Ms Banks, Jaguar Skills, Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn, and of course the SuperCharged Residents. Bringing a line-up to rival the main-stage, ‘The Arch’ Big Top House Tent was set to be headlined by the legendary duo CamelPhat. Supporting the duo would be Alan Fitzpatrick, Sonny Fodera, Detlef, Danny Howard, Mason Maynard, Meduza, Ku De Ta, Maklipz, and Olliver Sturdy.

First impressions seemed good, as a steady stream of people made their way through the woodland to the site: entry was organized and efficient, and the clouds above seemed to be holding off as best they could. Upon entering the site, the house stage was already packed to the back, with Alan Fitzpatrick doing what he does best. As we got closer to the tent I could hear Fitzpatrick doing a perfect blend between a remix of ‘Joys’ by Roberto Surace, into the extremely popular ‘Put A Record On’ by Matt Sassari. The crowd absolutely loved it!

Keen to get straight into the action we headed into the main arena where Jaguar Skills had just started his set. This turntable ninja is well known for his high energy, in your face bass, and more than anything else, entertaining DJ sets. Living up to his reputation, the crowd was witness to some absolute classics, mixed perfectly into some bone-crunching drum and bass – the energy was huge! Towards the end of the set, the sound started to cut out and this continued to happen on a number of occasions. This unfortunately caused Jaguar Skills to retire a few minutes earlier than planned, but this had been an electric start to the festivities!

Continuing on at the main stage, the sets that followed were nothing short of mammoth that afternoon. Highlights for myself were hearing Andy C play out Distress Signal’s new release ‘Horizon’, and Wilkinson pull through with ‘Desire’ by Sub Focus.

Keen not to miss out on the action happening over at the house stage, we kept popping our heads over to catch a few glimpses of the warm up acts before finishing the night with the house headliner. Highlights from the warm up acts were witnessing Detlef’s ‘Music Please’ bring the entire house stage into a unison of chant, and also hearing Danny Howards new single ‘Need’ which features the vocals of Alex Mills.

By the time it came to the headline slots, the rain had been falling for a few hours. Despite this, due to the whole festival being located under the big high-tops, performances went on with no issue at all. Spirits were high and all sound issues that had previously been a problem in the earlier part of the day, seemed to have been fixed.

Opting to finish Boundary Festival 2019 with CamelPhat in the house tent, the stage was bursting at the seams as thousands tried to catch a glimpse of the duo working their magic. Combining some of their originals such as ‘Breathe’ featuring Jem Cooke, with some blissful remixes, like Cristoph’s recent remake of ‘Sweet Deposition’, this was a beautiful set to end the festival, and brought nothing but smiles to those around the arena. It was safe to say that Boundary had smashed it for yet another year, and that the festival is clearly continuing to go from strength to strength. I look forward to seeing what lineup appears on the books for next year, and I can predict with some confidence that this festival is going to continue to expand and grow into something even more spectacular than it is today.

Thanks to Boundary Festival 2019 I had a blast and I look forward to seeing what 2020 brings along!

Saturday 28th September marks the fourth edition of Boundary Festival in Brighton. With the previous three years being described as “overwhelmingly successful”, it’s safe to say that all those attending this year’s event, are in for a treat. Boundary promises to push your festival going experience right to the limit, and transcend your previous conceptions of what an immersive fun party experience can be. The festival organizers have also made it possible to fit the entire capacity of the festival underneath the two huge top tents, meaning that rain or shine, the party will go on! The line-up announced so far, is bursting with some of the biggest names in the scene….

Chase & Status press shot

Boundary main-stage will be sponsored by SuperCharged. The bass fanatics behind Brighton’s SuperCharged have taken the city by storm, carving out a position at the top of the tree when it comes to break-beat, dubstep and drum ’n’ bass. Headlining on the day, will be the none other than the infamous Chase & Status. Support will come in the form of some absolute titans with the likes of Andy C, Wilkinson, My Nu Leng, Dread MC, Holy Goof, Ms Banks, Jaguar Skills, Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn, and of course the SuperCharged Residents, all making an appearance!

The Big House Top Tent will be sponsored by The Arch. Playing host to the likes of Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Annie Mac and many more, The Arch has one mission – to blow Brighton’s underground club scene out of the water. Bringing a line-up to rival the main-stage, the main act will be none other than the legendary duo Camelphat. Supporting the duo will be Alan Fitzpatrick, Sonny Fodera, Detlef, Danny Howard, Mason Maynard, Meduza, Ku De Ta, Maklipz, and Olliver Sturdy. Some mammoth names making an appearance this year!

Camelphat press shot

The third and final stage will be the OneAway Outdoor Container Stage, with Friction, Hybrid Minds, Randall, Benny L, Kronical, Stanton Warriors, and Krafty Kuts making up last piece of the Boundary 2019 puzzle.

As well as a day of fun, festival goers will also be privileged to a number of official and non-official after parties sweeping the city. SuperCharged will be back on their home turf at Concorde 2, OneAway will be taking over The Arch for the evening, and Boundary resident Olliver Sturdy will be back for his un-official ‘Syndicate’ party at Badda Bing. So much choice!

For those of you who still haven’t grabbed a ticket yet, move fast as they are running out. You can find all remaining tickets here

Boundary Brighton held their debut festival in Stanmer Park, Brighton on 17th September.

Nestled between the Universiy of Sussex and University of Brighton’s student accommodation on the South Downs of Sussex, the location was also a stone’s throw from the Amex Stadium; home to Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. The line-up consisted of a mixture of DJ sets and live performances from an array of successful artists and DJs across four stages. Three local established clubbing institutions (Concorde 2, Patterns & The Arch) partnered up with Elrow, Mixmag and LWE to bring three contrasting stages in addition to the Boundary Bandstand, perched on the hill overlooking the festival.

First impressions seemed good, as a steady stream of people made their way through the woodland to the site: entry was organised and efficient, the clouds above seemed to be holding off, staff were friendly and the place was starting to fill up. I delved into the LWE stage to catch the end of Mr Bongo Soundsystem… Severe disappoint descended – I was met with an absolutely awful quality of sound as an overwhelming low end rumble drowned out the set, which was equally as dissatisfying as the low volume that accompanied this.

boundary4

Quickly moving on, I worked my way around the site to try and enjoy a better quality of music consumption… I did not achieve this. Now I’m not one to criticise unnecessarily, especially as sound engineers have a complex job, but the sound throughout was completely amateur and everyone seemed to be in agreement. How could you draft in a line-up of big perfomers to then fail with the quality of sound that is being outputted? It was a very bad first impression and seemed to overshadow the enjoyment I was intending on having. Nevertheless, I continued to try and ignore it and went on to endulge myself in sets from Submotion Orchestra, Jackmaster, Toni Varga, Gentlemens Dub Club & Solardo. This lightened the spirit as these guys worked to get their crowds dancing. They fed the energies and executed their flawless performances. One of the highlights of the afternoon was Toni Varga in the Patterns x LWE stage dropping ‘Liberty City- If You Really Love Someone (The Murk Groove)’.

14444820_1755766718006452_8491566535165181043_o

I sat up by the food stands eating pizza as the evening descended, when Krafty Kuts & A.Skillz took to the Boundary Bandstand stage to smash up the place. A set infused with Bass and Break-Beat bangers followed, as they supplied the goods to a crowd enveloped in the moment. It was the first time I’d seen these two live, and I think it’s fair to say that they deserved the responses they were getting, evidently enjoying themselves.

boundary5

The evening for me was occupied by sets from Tom Trago, Seth Troxler, Gerd Janson, Toni Varga, Joy Orbison & Richy Ahmed. I switched between the Elrow & LWE stages for the sets by this rich list of House & Techno masters. Everyone got down and made the most of the last few hours; treated by the talent all the above had to offer. The array of fluorescent inflatables and props at the Elrow stage were impressive as always, and although the crowds flocked towards the main stage for Craig David TS5 performance, I finished off the day from within the warmth of the LWE stage as Joy Orbison did the rounds and ended Boundary on a high.

14425473_1755757441340713_6602354006991193089_o

The evening led me to become optimistic that maybe next year, Boundary Brighton will put right the sound problems and propel themselves to the level expected when accommodating for such big names. The day was enjoyable however, the organization was very good, the names on the bill were varied but it worked, also queuing for drinks wasn’t an issue, therefore they laid a foundation to work off of and improve on for next year. I’m sure that a wider selection of alcohol would be greatly appreciated also.

Overall, they introduced themselves to a standard that could lead to big things, but initially, the basics need to be in place to make it a complete success.  Lastly, go check out ‘Mr Wilson’s Second Liners’ as this live street band got everyone jumping and grabbing their phones to get a video; they’re great live perfomers who were marching round the site all day performing variations of styles and genres in their colourful attire.

We love a good festival at Data Transmission with the key ingredients for us, amazing location, variety in the line-up – the more genres the better, as this usually leads to the discovery of new music & people.  So this morning we are excited by the announcement of Boundary Brighton.  A festival with four stages of music, a vintage fair, delicious local food and other unexpected treats, all nestled between the crest of the Downs and the City with the sea below.

Taking over Stanmer Park on Saturday 17th September and promising a line-up that brings together house, dub, bashment, techno, drum and bass, breaks, electronica and even a little crazy jazz with each stage offering different styles, always reflective of the best of its genre.  They have joined forces with the city’s leading music institutions who are each to host a stage.  If you enjoy the sounds of Barcelona and Ibiza mixed with a large dose of insanity, outrageous performers, confetti filled air and crowd surfing chickens (We wonder who is hosting this….) – you’ll love the fiesta taking place at The Arch stage.  Patterns, better known for it’s intimate dancefloor and impeccable sound system, are providing an underground, edge with deeper, leftfield sounds.  Big sounds & the Big Stage will be delivered by Concorde 2 stage and last but not least, their Victorian bandstand – perched on a hilltop overlooking the rest of the festival will bring a really different flavour, with a fun line up that will keep you smiling and dancing all day.

Boundary Brighton hope they have created something synonymous with Brighton to share and grow with local communities for years to come… and if you have an idea (big or small), or would like to get involved (a little or a lot!) please do get in touch with them.
