Renegade Masters: René LaVice

From the humble beginnings of finding out about Drum & Bass music via the late night broadcasts on Toronto’s College Radio stations (88.1FM & 89.5FM) while growing up, René LaVice has travelled worlds away from where he started. Flash forward a decade or so, René’s own productions are now hailed around the world as some of the genre’s most iconic and innovative records in electronic dance music. He’s flown worldwide performing shows and cultivating the sound of Drum & Bass as a true tastemaker and leader in the genre. 

As though coming full circle, René was approached by the BBC about creating his own specialist show on Radio 1, so in 2017, following in the footsteps of legendary former hosts Fabio & Grooverider, and Friction, René is now the Drum & Bass representative on the world’s biggest platform. 

Following his release of ‘Jump’ alongside Stanton Warriors, Knytro and Deadly, Device head honcho René returns to his D&BArena award-nominated label once more for his new single ‘Budz’. 

The new single also follows an earlier release this year ‘I’ve Been Waiting’ alongside Richter, Dr. Apollo and Gracie Van Brunt as René continues to champion the most exciting, up and coming talent on his imprint.

With Device recently hitting the one year anniversary milestone and being nominated for best newcomer label at the D&BArena Awards last year, René’s label direction has demonstrated its ethos of pushing genre boundaries, whilst showcasing fresh artists as well as his own top-tier collabs. 

The Device label family now includes the likes of S.P.Y, Benny L, Danny Byrd, Halflight, Something Something, The Melody Men, Future Cut, Camden Cox and more, putting Device at the forefront amongst its peers.

We’re delighted to be bringing you another certified Renegade Master to you guys. René has stepped out of his comfort zone a bit with this one as he says:

“I’m known for producing and DJing a wide spectrum of music, but I’ve felt the urge to showcase my darker side. This is the type of stuff you’d hear rattling the walls of a warehouse during an illegal rave. What can I say other than dark times call for darker measures, or mixes in this case! haha.”
