We asked Jessica for 5 Facts and 5 Tracks for our regular feature…
5 Facts
1. I was flying aerobatic aircrafts (excluding taking off and landing) before I was driving cars.
2. I own and wear enough animal print clothing, and along with washing darks and lights, animal print is its own laundry category.
3. The only reason I discovered yoga is because I crashed a moped on a surf trip to Bali in 2010. I had pretty gnarly grazes on one of my legs (they call it a Bali tattoo), so I couldn’t surf for three weeks… Yoga was the only exercise I could do while my leg healed and I completely fell in love with it. On my return to London, I was going to every yoga studio I could, and it wasn’t long before I took the leap to get qualified to teach.
4. While I’d always wanted to DJ, the reason I finally started in 2012 is because my yoga teacher training got cancelled the week before I was supposed to start. I’d quit my job and moved out of my flat to do the course (risking planning). I was unemployed, staying at my boyfriend’s (now husband’s) place and was freaking out about what my future held. My days were pretty empty, so I started spinning his records in his lounge. I loved it and it wasn’t long before I started to book some London gigs. Luckily for me… It quickly turned into an incredibly exciting and fulfilling career (balanced with teaching yoga).
5. After taking a 2-year hiatus from music during the pandemic when moving to LA in 2020. On return to the music studio, all of my wellness endeavours have been my biggest inspiration. Whether it’s DJing to a crowd, or leading a group through a yoga flow. You’re holding a space for people and using music as a tool to make them move, release and find a sense of flow. That’s what I always want to reflect in my music and sets.
5 Tracks
1) Virgo Rising – Jessica Skye
I’m really proud of this track, I started it back in 2018, and it sounded a lot different to what it does now. While I liked it back then, there was always something I was unsure about so held onto it. When reopening the file last year I started to rebuild it, and its current form came together. It was a really pivotal moment and my sound has been hugely influenced from that session in the studio in terms of taste, music selection for sets and of course when producing. In 2018 it was the steel drums that I couldn’t quite commit to, but now… That’s my favorite part of the track.
2) Ekata – (feat. Toshi) [Lunar Plane Remix]
I’m trying to remember how I discovered this tune, but it was as I started to pivot to more of an organic sound. It might have been during a Rufus Du Sol club set at Space in Miami. The whole track is so emotive for me, the keys and percussion are stunning.
3) Lua (Pippi Ciez Retake) – Pippi Ciez & Djamou Sangare
This was an opening song at Keinemusik’s Burning Man sets…(I wasn’t there in person… but listened to it stuck in notorious LA traffic on the 405). I think this is such a beautiful track. It feels emotive and prayer-like, it’s a tune I never get bored of.
4) Besame – Malone & Calussa
I’m a big Malone fan and really love Blondish’s label Abracadabra. This was one of my first Afro house discoveries, and it’s now one of my favorites genres to play (this one always goes off).
5) Horizon Red – ZOE Kypri & Made By Pete
Huge tune of 2023. So beautiful, so inspiring. Crosstown Rebels has been a favorite label since day dot. Using vocals is personally so hit or miss for me and something I really struggle with… But this track is such a hit.
