Reviewed: Chase & Status at Bramley-Moore Docks

It was a cold and miserable February afternoon last Saturday in Liverpool; storm Ciara on the horizon as the blustery bursts rattled through the city, people were trundling from shop to shop trying to shake off the winter blues and pick up the last of the post-Christmas sales, but over at Bramley-Moore Docks it was a whole other story…

Kicking off the events season of 2020, Worried About Henry and Chibuku delivered a jaw-dropping whopper of a lineup, listing Chase & Status, Hybrid Minds and Shy FX on their winter blues busting event.

Nestled right on the waterfront, Bramley-Moore Docks sits tight by the water’s edge. As the wind whipped up from the river Mersey, the disused hangar was the perfect place to host a tearing and stormy drum and bass rave. It was industrial, abandoned and most importantly; loud. As we queued, dark clouds rolled above us and ahead, all we could see was a mist of lasers and smoke.

Huddling into the epicentre of the crowd to keep warm, we found ourselves up close and personal for some “on the barrier” action to see Hybrid Minds. Stopping by on their ‘Outline’ tour and delivering their niche style of catchy vocals and big basslines, they received a huge reaction to each tune. Having such a large body of work, many of the ravers knew all the words to ‘Touch’ a truly spine-tingling moment proving that drum and bass has many beautiful pathways to explore. Presenting a perfect combo of dance floor, liquid and anthemic tracks, the styles were blended seamlessly.

Next up on the podium was seasoned veteran Shy FX. Whenever and wherever I see Shy FX, I always feel the summer carnival vibes, and this was truly put to the test as the cold air gusts whipped in through the large open doors, but he never ceases to amaze. Ploughing through a combination of new school and old school, the crowd were going crazy at each double drop, twist and turn. Armed with a combination of released and unreleased tunes, for one hour the ravers were transported to the blaring hot streets of Notting Hill.

At last, it was time for the final headliner fresh from their ‘RTRN II JUNGLE’ album, Chase & Status. Having been at the top of their game for over 10-years, they are no strangers to the dancefloor. With an extraordinarily large catalogue of hits, Chase & Status delivered a hyper energetic set heavily focussed on their RTRN ll JUNGLE project with a few unheard exclusives sprinkled throughout. It was a set full of energy, good vibes and living proof as to why they are still at the top of their game.

Billed as Liverpool’s largest drum and bass night, it felt as though Worried About Henry and Chibuku provided a pivotal moment in the city’s drum and bass nightlife and Bramley-Moore Docks played the perfect host for it. Liverpool is as hungry as ever for great bass music and has kicked 2020 off in the best way possible. We can’t wait for more.
