Over the years, the venue has gone by many names, including The Ballroom, the Top Rank Suite, Hummingbird, Carling Academy, and O2 Academy. It’s hosted everyone from The Clash to The Beastie Boys, Nirvana to Bob Marley & The Wailers, Amy Winehouse, and Ed Sheeran.

“I’m extremely passionate about preserving Birmingham’s rich musical heritage and our work culminates with Forum Birmingham. LWE and Broadwick Live, London’s top electronic promoters, the teams behind Printworks and Tobacco Dock reunite to launch the inaugural music program at London’s newest venue, The Beams, after partnering for the huge sell-out success of Printworks London’s.

The Beams is situated across indoor and outdoor spaces and is housed in a warehouse that was once a part of the Tate & Lyle factory complex. It will serve as a testing ground for culture in all of its forms.

Broadwick Live and LWE, say the venue is 55,000 sq ft and can accommodate up to three rooms. They plan to co-promote 12 shows over 12 consecutive Saturdays beginning on 1st October and continuing through to 17th December.

The Beams

“We’re excited to finally announce our inaugural music programme at The Beams, in collaboration with LWE.

The partnership of two of London’s foremost promoters and musical curators, feels truly significant as it is a reunion of the ambitious team who launched Printworks London.

Musically, we will lean into the partnership, programming an eclectic series of day to night events over twelve consecutive Saturdays – October to December. We’ll be featuring top tier names and emerging talent, across various sounds, styles and genres within the broad sphere of house, techno, disco and everything that lies in between. We look forward to introducing our audiences to this exceptional new industrial setting, full of character, situated in an untouched part of London…”

Ajay Jayaram, Director of Music, Broadwick Live Group

The Beams will be a different venue for London, a raw and industrial destination that will be drenched in natural light during the day and filled with plenty of production elements once the sun goes down. Located in the heart of East London, in the Royal Docks, and on the River Thames, the venue is easily accessible by the DLR via Pontoon Dock station.

The Beams

“It’s exciting to be teaming up with the team at Broadwick Live once again for the launch of The Beams’ music programme, and expand on our journey at Printworks London. We both have a strong history in dance events so it feels natural to partner at this brand new venue that will be unlike anything else the capital has to offer.

LWE originated from one-off warehouse events so we are well aware of how to use the raw warehouse aesthetic and build a programme of events that compliment their surroundings. We are creating something distinct and can’t wait to show you what we have in store.”

Paul Jack and Will Harold, Co-founders of LWE

As with Printworks and other venues in the Broadwick Live portfolio, The Beams will operate under a hybrid multi-use model. During the week it will provide versatile space for modern industrial usages such as set builds, film and art production, photo shoots, brand events, exhibitions and fashion shows. Guests will be welcomed at the weekend for the music series and cultural events when the space wouldn’t otherwise be in use.

The Beams, which is currently going through the planning process, is the result of Broadwick Live’s close collaboration with Newham Council, The Royal Docks & Projekt working to ensure The Beams delivers social value, economic and cultural impact.

The shows will be announced on 5 July, followed by tickets going on sale on 7th July…Watch this space!

ION Festival is a different kind of music event, one where there are no festival fences. Ticket holders are pushed to explore as they please and create a pure holiday experience. Taking place in Dhërmi on the beautiful Albanian coastline between 7th – 14th September 2022 after a 2 year hiatus, this edition promises to be one that should not be missed.

Set in an untouched part of the world on the outskirts of Europe, ION festival shares the same region of the Mediterranean as Corfu and Southeast Italy commanding 25°C weather in September. The first thing of note is the stunning Albanian coastline running along the Ionian Sea pressed against a pebbly beach and transparent ocean water taking up much of the festival site. The part that really adds to ION’s incredible setting is that it’s directly under the imposing green Ceraunian mountains that only adds to the scenic nature of the festival which feels totally cut off from the rest of the world.

Dotted throughout the festival playground will be a number of stages and experiences. Currently, there are five stages announced across the festival site with other experiences across the coastline, only accessible by boat. These will provide some of the most memorable moments of the week.

“When we are started to bring our vision for ION Festival to life, we wanted to make sure each music location had its own, unique vibe with a distinct music programme to match.

From the open-air hedonism of our Main Stage and The Deck, to the depths of The Bunker, the intimacy of The Cove, to The Yacht Club’s slick terrace, we feel we have fine-tuned our lineup with exceptional attention to detail. And that’s all before we get to the additional experiences that we know will provide some of the most incredible spots to experience electronic music anywhere in the world.

We hope you can all join us in this stunning location that we are extremely fortunate to call home this September.”
Jeff Gray, ION Festival

The Main Stage will be an open-air haven, a safe harbour set into a private cove. Lucky dancers can keep moving until the early hours when the warm sunrise spreads over the area.

The Bunker will be hidden away from prying eyes. The cavernous indoor space of blasted concrete pillars and the labyrinthine of passageways creates the more atmospheric buildings on the site.

The Deck is for those lazy cocktail-fueled days and balmy nights. This beachside stage is a spacious outdoor area in which to enjoy the music of those selectors who know how to soundtrack summer memories.

The Cove is an intimate, sandy paradise on the water’s edge. As the heat of the afternoon gives way to night-time hedonism, this stage transforms from a chilled-out sun trap to dance central.

Jutting over the Ionian is The Yacht Club, from its position on top of a rocky outcrop, festival-goers can dance into the early hours and enjoy the coast’s epic panorama view from this slick, modern terrace.

The team behind ION is no stranger to putting on a good party, best known for Junction 2 festival, the team at LWE has slowly risen through the ranks from club promoters to major festival event organisers. Now ION is the jewel in the crown bringing people from far and wide for one hedonistic week in a brand new location.

For everyone who chooses to come to ION on this extended summer party, it will be a week filled with new encounters and 3,000 like-minded friends, all soundtracked by electronic music’s best artists.

A long-awaited weekend explosion of full-scale techno events, led from the front by Junction 2: Inner City

The August bank brought back a long-awaited plethora of UK electronic events and festivals. For anyone looking through their social channels over the weekend, you would not have been alone to have almost felt as though things were finally back to normal.

For those lucky enough to secure tickets to the sold out 2-day Junction 2: Inner City event run by LWE at Tobacco Dock, the excitement was palpable. The event was well run, with attendees streaming in early doors on both days to plant their feet firmly in front of world-class sound systems and impressive lighting rigs to await some of the biggest names in techno. Both days offered up enviable lineups across five spaces, with day 1 being live-streamed to the masses via Beatport too.

There was certainly a space and a vibe for the varied crowd the event attracted. From the more intimate performances found in the likes of the ‘Little Gallery’ and ‘The Vault’ to the three largest and unique spaces: ‘The Great Gallery’ main stage that provided an open, high ceiling industrial-feel and certainly shook us out of our 18-month event drought; ‘The Cavern’, newly opened on the ground floor, that offered up a brick-arched ravers’ paradise reminding us of what it feels like to be back side by side with glowing and grinning ravers; to ‘The Terrace’ that provided a light and airy backdrop to some stunning and more melodic moments.

Day 1, gave us the kickstart we all needed, boasting an all-female powerhouse lineup in the Great Gallery that did not disappoint. Cici, Sama’ Abdulhadi, ANNA and closing artist, Amelie Lens, showed that there is certainly no lack of female talent in the techno scene today. The bass remained strong throughout the day, interrupted by conscious breakdowns, a blend of familiar and current chart-topping melodies and the stage continued to shake for 8 ½ glorious hours.

Across the way, Maceo Plex took the crowd on a journey in the Terrance as only Maceo could, his set interspersed with his own productions – one of the highlights of the set being when he dropped his remix of Faithless’ ‘Insomnia’. Meanwhile, downstairs Jon Hopkins built up the crowd with a natural and unforced quality to his tracks.

Sama’ Abdulhadi, an emblematic and figurehead artist from the Palestinian underground scene, was certainly a standout performance from the day, bringing relentless energy through her impeccable track selection during a two-hour set. With this being her first appearance at Tobacco Dock, she weaved effortlessly between 3 channels on Traktor and punctuated every key breakdown and drop with moves envied and emulated by those at the front, feeding off the energy of the crowd. Her passion shone through her set and set the stage perfectly for both ANNA and Amelie Lens who were to come next and to take the night to its conclusion. As usual, Amelie made an appearance backstage early on to support ANNA and to read the energy of the room, meaning that she came in hard and heavy from the off and ready to take people to the sweaty, grinning mess that she left them in.

Day 2 saw many brush off sore heads to return for a second Junction 2: Inner City dose, as well as an influx of fresh faces ready to see what the day had in store for them. It was apparent from the minute that the line-up was announced that attendees would need to perfect the artful skill of navigation and diary management as the line-up crammed in must-see acts in every room.

With Theo Nasa kicking off an impressive set in The Cavern at 2pm, it was already obvious that Sunday was ready to pack a punch. It was also clear for some revellers that they would be unable to drag themselves away to any other room as the heavy-hitter lineup continued. VTSS dropped one of her much-loved tracks, ‘Atlantyda’, while Dax J held the energy and BPM high as he relentlessly manoeuvred through his set, with Nina Kraviz bringing one of her classic techno and trance sets to close.

Over in The Terrace, Laurent Garnier took the crowd on a more melodic 3hr journey, twisting, turning and teasing the crowd, with many proclaiming it to be one of the best sets of the entire event.

In the Great Gallery, KAS:ST were another standout performance, with the two French DJs bringing a range of hypnotic rhythms, beasty drops and tantalising breakdowns. These guys certainly knew how to hold the room dropping bomb after bomb, culminating in excitable roars from the crowd as they closed with one of their latest tracks, ‘Hell on Earth’.

The man behind Drumcode, Adam Beyer, then stepped up to the decks to deliver a lively and crowd-pleasing set. Beyer continued to build up the crowd ready for the close of the night, with Belgian producer-DJ Charlotte de Witte.

As is usual with de Witte’s sets, she effortlessly moved between heavy acid-throttled sounds to enchanting breakdowns, such as the mesmerising ‘Sgadi Li’, before building back to hefty drops that the crowd couldn’t get enough of. The moment that many were waiting for was as de Witte played Beatport’s current global number 1 for the last two weeks, ‘The Age of Love’, her latest re-mix with fiancé Enrico Sangiuliano. In attendance, she beckoned Sangiuliano over for a hug and a kiss in front of the crowd before effortlessly continuing with her set.

As Junction 2: Inner City closed and the crowd made their way out into the night (and most likely on to the J2 after party at Fabric), it was clear that the event had reinvigorated a spirit and a joy that many of us have missed from the lack of large events over the last year and a half. To run an event at this scale with all the additional challenges posed by Covid, all in all the team at LWE, Tobacco Dock and J2 staff did a brilliant job. The weekend was well run and was an excellent way to spend the bank holiday. Now we just need to wait until June 2022, to see the long-awaited return of the outdoor festival in Boston Manor Park.

Tickets for next years outdoor extravaganza are in short supply so if you haven’t secured yours yet, don’t sleep on it and get them NOW!!

The beautiful beach-lined scenery of Dhërmi on the Albanian Riviera is set to welcome 3000 guests to the first-ever ION Festival. Taking place between 2nd and 9th September this will be a celebration of unforgettable electronic music, restoration and exploration.

Situated on Albania’s unrivalled picturesque coastline, the village of Dhërmi is famous to locals and holidaymakers for its picturesque landscape, laid-back atmosphere, exquisite cuisine and unique culture. It will provide the perfect destination for the debut ION Festival Albania.

ION is the latest festival from LWE, the longstanding team behind countless acclaimed music events in the UK, including London’s Junction 2 Festival.

There are eight different and unique stages planned for ION Festival 2020!

The Main Stage is an open-air haven, a safe harbour set into a private cove providing an inimitable setting for the festival’s headline acts.

The Bunker is a huge indoor space of blasted concrete pillars and labyrinthine passageways and will provide the ideal environment for the world’s leading artists from the world of house, techno and electronic music.

The Deck is a spacious beachside stage.

The Cove is surrounded by the rambling woodlands which line the coast.

The Yacht Club juts out over the Ionian Sea from its position on top of a rocky outcrop.

The Canyon is enclosed by a dramatic, imposing rock face that shields the location from the world.

The Castle stage is set up on a rocky hill and the 19th century abandoned castle will play host to a very special event at ION.

The Sub Base stage is an ex-military submarine base set into the side of a mountain. All stone and rusting steel, work on the Sub Base started in 1969 and finished almost 20 years later and is now used for navy training.

Alongside the massive musical offerings, ION attendees will be able to take part in meditation, sound baths, yoga, paddle boarding, hiking and snorkelling. Local food is often described as a mix of Greek, Italian and Turkish in addition to the rich, slow-cooked recipes and local seafood that the region is known for.

Proceeds from the festival will go to charities working on the relief effort following the tragic earthquake in Tirana, Albania in November.

Tickets are on sale soon. Register here to gain priority access. Tickets come as part of a package which includes flights, hotel and transfers’. Further details and lineups for ION Festival will be announced in the coming months.

LWE has launched a new series of shows coming to Magazine London in 2020. Exploring a variety of house & techno and everything that falls within those circles, Sphere represents the meeting point for divergent sounds and people from all meanders of life.

For the launch on Saturday 15th February, LWE has invited a cross-section of musical styles as Hot Since 82, Eats Everything and very special guest Maya Jane Coles bring their pioneering sounds to London’s recent addition Magazine. Further, La Fleur is an artist LWE have been working closely with over the last few years, and will be joined by Effy who’s hotly tipped for great things in 2020.

LWE will be bringing in a new production and lighting concept, transforming the blank canvas space into something like nowhere else in the city. Expect different depths to the dancefloor and a myriad of production techniques to create a glowing iridescence amongst the black walls.

With a big focus on sound quality, expect clarity, warmth and loudness.  The venue will be fitted with a bespoke L’Acoustics Soundsystem, with LWE’s long term partners BCS Audio. The same winning combination that has won accolades at Junction 2 Festival.

Officially festival season kicked off with We Are FSTVL at the end of May, my festival season, however, starts with LWE and Junction 2.

Spanning two days this year the award-winning festival certainly had something special in the pipeline for us. So let’s delve right in!

Friday

Waking up Friday morning to the pitter patter of rain is every festival goers worst nightmare, should the wellies be taken out of storage, do I need to rethink my outfit, is it going to be a mud fest?!

Thankfully LWE and Junction 2 pretty much had everything covered and I mean that literally as well as metaphorically.

Junction 2 decided to edit their layout somewhat this year and frankly, it worked really well! Each stage situated in a familiar location but positioned in such a way that leaving the grounds of one and entering into another felt like moving between worlds!

Queues for this festival seem to be a thing of the past, I don’t think I queued for more than 5 minutes either day for anything. It’s the simple things that really make a difference to your day and festival experience.

After a short nip through security, it wasn’t long before we had a drink in hand and was ready to rave.

A quick mention of the reusable cup scheme happening this year! Fantastic idea and hope it continues in the future.

© Photography by Khris Cowley for Here & Now (fb.com/wearehereandnow)

The first point of call was the aptly named The Woods, rRoxymore was just hitting a groove as I entered the enchanted grounds. Fairy lights and disco balls were high up on the trees, giving an almost childhood fantasy feel to the whole area. rRoxymore is a fantastic artist and her otherworldly sounds suited the woods completely, driving low bass lines from the speakers mounted in trees it was pretty easy to see how talented DJ rRoxymore could have listeners drifting off to planes unknown.

© Photography by Shotaway

Moving on from the forest it was time to brave The Bridge. A great stage and area I think we can all agree but from previous experience its a bit of a nightmare logistically, thankfully this has been improved, exit walkways have been introduced and it truly makes a world of difference. No one is crushing each other in different directions.

Making my way through the crowd toward the front as S_AS is just finishing up, he’s delving deep with the sounds, a solid smooth opening set, minimal, heavy on the kick and dropping groovy melodic rhythm to great effect, slowly the crowd down at the bridge is building.

Next up was Job Jobse, I hadn’t heard much of this DJ before but after his set on Friday, he’s definitely one on my radar to actively seek out.

Effortlessly controlling the crowd Job Jobse is certainly a slave to the craft, conjuring up a party vibe whilst utilising the amazing sound system down at the bridge to impressive effect.

Next stop was the infamous Warehouse. Surely a mind-blowing experience was to be had here! However, there had been some health and safety issues due to the rain and was closed until further notice while they made the area safe.

This gave me a chance to see Dixon at The Bridge, I’ve been to a few festivals with Dixon on the lineup but due to clashes have always missed him. I wasn’t about to let another chance slip through.

As I made my way down to the stage the area was pumping. Dixon is hailed by DJ and raver alike as “the best there is” regularly voted into the top spot of best DJ by various channels, Dixon is truly something to behold, letting loose some deep driving bass lines coupled with those eclectic crescendos synonymous with Innervisions, Dixon knows how to encapsulate a crowd and take them on a journey!

I’d heard on the grapevine that The Warehouse was back open, I didn’t want to leave Dixon but I knew I wanted to end my night in there so I bid farewell and made my way over.

DJ Stingray was in full swing, a DJ whose name I have been aware of for some time but was intrigued to find out more. Boy did he give some.

Listening to his set felt like going through the decades of sound. At one point I turned to my Rave unit and said it feels like I’ve been transported to Rave in the ’80s in America. With a feel of early Afrika Bambaataa, you could really see where DJ Stingray got his influences from. A superb and refreshing set to witness.

Friday was drawing to a close and there was only one set that was going to finish off my day. That was going to be the one and only Daniel Avery. A DJ who I believe is underrated even still, he is in essence “Fight club” no one really talks much about this outstanding DJ Producer, for me he is phenomenal, his sets are always cutting edge. He truly has his finger on the pulse of techno and it shows.

I’ve seen many of Avery’s set and this was definitely one of my faves. Spacey and almost alien like with the sounds, at one point I thought Moulder and Scully were gonna turn up. His use of acid is sublime, used to accentuate the growling distorted bass of his techno, his mixing is on point and his layering of tracks creates an atmosphere that truly submerges you into his sound. Masterclass in mixing and potentially the best set of the weekend, but definitely the best set of Friday

So Friday came and went. Great fun was had by all, the rain didn’t dampen the spirits, it was time to head home and do it all again on Saturday!

Saturday

Saturday morning and the Sun has decided to show its face, we are up early doors and over the cafe! Don’t want to miss anything today.

Just like Friday zero queues again for me. It could be the fact I was there so early but I’m going to chalk it to everyone involved bringing their A game.

Saturday was jammed packed full of amazing sets, luckily I got to see everyone that I wanted as there wasn’t many clashes, just the odd overlap excellent programming by the event.

To start the day it was down to The Bridge, Bart Skills was opening up which was an excellent choice. His productions over the last couple of years have featured in many a summer techno set. A longtime staple throughout the Drumcode label, Bart was bringing the pace early on.

A quick nip to The Stretch, Lauren Lo Sung is playing and she’s hitting the summer vibe just right. I’ve spoken about Lauren a few times in the past and the stretch today is programmed for your less heavy techno enthusiasts, bumpy beats and techy bass ring out across the green opening in Boston park, truly groovy stuff.

I make my way back to The Bridge as I wanna catch Ida Engberg laying down some filthy techno. A Goddess behind the decks, the face of an angel but pulls beats from the very depths of The Underworld! Even Hades himself would bow down to her!

Dense & Pika are my first foray into The Warehouse tent on Saturday. The boys honestly never disappoint. Just like Ronseal – they do exactly what it says on the tin. Pure class, get the crowd going and moving with such ease. Definitely one of the best sets from the weekend Dense & Pika turned the warehouse upside down!

I’m a bit upset I missed Dax J but Ritchie Hawtin is playing The Bridge at the same time, it really is Sophie’s Choice but I take my leave and head back down to witness a true Masterclass.

Since I saw Ritchie playing at We Are for Cocoon some three years ago I have been waiting for his return to the British Isle, it almost happened but due to the bloody snow in 2018 he got stuck in Hungry.

Now it was finally time, I knew trying to push my way through the crowd to get a better view was pointless so I got myself a nice spot in front of the new screens they’ve put up with the speakers. What he does is unbelievable, he had the crowd eating out of his hands. Not just a DJ but an artist, a composer.

Breaking the boundaries that I didn’t even know were there. My favourite set of the festival. The rolling minimal beats are hypnotic and he moves through them at pace, his creation of sound is second to none, he understands what the crowd wants and you can see his face beaming the whole time as he delivers it! Truly inspirational!

As the sun is going in and the day is drawing to a close I finish my Junction 2 the only way I know how. Watching my one and only Adam Beyer. I have a special place in my heart for the Drumcode honcho. A DJ that even on a bad day (not that there are any) still drives and digs deep, never letting the fans down. His sets are always so energetic and full of life, even when he’s playing the deepest underground sounds.

Next year Junction 2 will have its fifth anniversary and it’s great to see a festival that had a loss its first year grow and thrive and put itself on the map as being one of the best festivals in London. I can’t wait to see what they have installed for us next year. Have a feeling LWE and Junction 2 are gonna pull out all the stops and then some for this celebration.
