Social media—especially live event footage—plays a huge role in discovering and promoting new talent, but only when the artists behind the music are properly credited.

The campaign’s organisers believe that now is the right time for the industry to embrace a new standard of transparency and respect when crediting others’ work. They’ve outlined best practices that are already backed by major names in the industry, including DJ/Producer Mason, BAM! Popauteurs, fabric, Mobilee, Glasgow Underground, Good Company, Buma/Stemra, Data Transmission, Neighbourhood, LabelWorx, Your Army, and Aslice.

In a passionate keynote speech at IMS Ibiza, Dutch DJ and producer Frank Nitzinsky highlighted some key stats: on average, only 3% of a DJ’s set is music they’ve personally produced, and a whopping 90% of DJ content shared on Instagram doesn’t credit the music being played. These emotional, high-energy video clips are the backbone of marketing campaigns for artists, labels, promoters, and more, often reaching millions of potential fans. Yet without proper credit, it’s only the DJ or the account posting the video that benefits—not the original creator of the track.

That’s where the #RespectTheCreators campaign comes in. Its goal is to educate artists, fans, and industry pros about the importance of giving credit where it’s due across social media.

So why isn’t music being credited? The reasons range from simple apathy or ignorance to the old-school DJ mindset of keeping the best tracks a secret. But the campaign’s organisers argue that respect for other creators has always been part of electronic music culture—and it’s time that this respect extends to social media, too.

The campaign stresses that a healthy music ecosystem relies on supporting talent from the ground up and that artists have a fundamental right to be recognized for their work. DJ culture can’t be the exception—whether you’re a creator or a curator, there’s a shared responsibility here.

Whether it’s using tools on platforms like Instagram and Facebook to tag the music via stickers or simply including the artist and song title in your post’s caption, the campaign urges everyone in the industry to think about how they can respect the creators of the music they love every time they post online.

So, how can you #RespectTheCreators?

It’s easy:

• DJs: When you share a video from a gig or mix, and the music isn’t yours, tag the artists and list the track names prominently.

• Online Platforms: Ensure track lists are clearly visible below videos or audio content.

• Promoters: Make sure the music featured in your event promotions gets credited.

Mike Pickering is a true pioneer and visionary in electronic music, his achievements are numerous: Hacienda DJ, Factory Records A&R signing Happy Mondays, Deconstruction Records boss bringing Black Box, Guru Josh, K Klass, Felix and Kylie Minogue and of course, his own M People to the world, Columbia Records A&R who signed Calvin Harris – these are just a few highlights of a long career that has left a lasting legacy on electronic music and its culture. 

Mike began his career at Factory Records in the early 1980s as an A&R man signing Happy Mondays and James. Simultaneously Mike formed his own band Quando Quango, which enjoyed an underground dance hit in the US with the track ‘Love Tempo’, championed by legendary DJs Larry Levan and Mark Kamins in the New York club scene.

Pickering went on to work at the legendary Manchester clubbing mecca the Hacienda, as a booker and DJ, staying at the iconic club for eleven years he created the NUDE night on Fridays, which pioneered house music in the UK.

In 1987 Mike started the band TCOY whose first release was the underground hit ‘Carino’, one of the first British house records, he started the label Deconstruction with his then managers. In the 90s Deconstruction took dance music to the charts with massive hits from Black Box, Guru Josh, K Klass, Felix and Kyle Minogue as well as with Pickering’s own band M People. M People went on to sell 14 million albums and had countless hit singles whilst selling out arenas around the world. The group won 2 Brit Awards and the Mercury Prize for their album ‘Elegant Slumming’.

From his A&R vision with the Happy Mondays in the late-80s through to redefining popular dance music today with the signing of Calvin Harris – he has been involved in many major crossover cultural moments. And then there is his own M People project; his work with the Hacienda; Deconstruction; Manchester. He’s one of the true unsung heroes of dance music’s rise to global dominance and one of our most gifted musical directors – period.”

After M People Mike joined Columbia Records as A&R where he signed and helped the careers of Calvin Harris, Kasabian, The Ting Tings and Gossip amongst many others. Mike still DJs and was recently involved in the Hacienda Classical concerts which included a performance on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury to open the festival.

Mike’s contribution to dance music is undeniable and he joins an esteemed list of previous recipients of this award which include: Underworld, Nile Rodgers,Fatboy Slim, Pete Tong, Sven Väth, Carl Cox, Simon Dunmore, Space Ibiza founder Pepe Roselló, Mambo Ibiza founder Javier Anadon and Ricardo Urgell founder of Pacha Ibiza and the worldwide Pacha Group.

Each year, IMS Ibiza presents opportunities for delegates to explore best practices and innovation in technology, diversity and inclusion, education and wellness, presented in engaging formats discoverable across the sprawling seaside Destino Pacha Resort site. 

Wellness platform The Art of Areté will once again be fully integrated into the IMS Ibiza experience free of charge to all attendees thanks to the generosity of Pioneer DJ. It will offer daily programming supporting the mental health of our industry, including Vedic Meditation training (as taught by Beatles’ guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi), breathwork, yoga, sound healing, sunset walks, and keynote artist interviews to be announced.

IMS College, presented in partnership with Point Blank Music School, will offer a complete schedule of artist-led workshops and DJ and production masterclasses. Established in 2007 by five partners, including iconic DJ, A&R exec and BBC Radio 1 presenter Pete Tong MBE and industry executive and artist manager Ben Turner, IMS Ibiza was created to inspire debate and discussion while helping to implement progressive change within the electronic music industry. The three-day immersive event features live seminars, keynote interviews, technology masterclasses, performances, and industry networking opportunities. IMS is renowned for driving dialogue on issues beyond just the music: diversity, mental health, and sexual harassment, and has worked closely with the shesaid.so organization for the last seven years – who have co-curated their speaker line-ups and hosted their own events and safe spaces. It also publishes the annual IMS Business Report, and its data, analysis and annual valuation have become critical to the industry’s own positioning and success. The event is hosted every year by Tong with fellow BBC Radio 1 dance presenter Jaguar. During the 2022 summit, CEO of The Beatport Group, Robb McDaniels, delivered his “Road to Recovery” opening keynote which reunited delegates from around the globe after a two-year COVID-induced hiatus, and Beatport live-streamed the Dalt Vila concert finale.

IMS has a long international history, previously hosting satellite summits in Los Angeles for five years (IMS Engage), Shanghai and Singapore (IMS Asia-Pacific), and in Malta more recently with IMS College. One of the first major global industry gatherings to take place since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, IMS Ibiza Summit 2022 will reunite the entire ecosystem of the genre for three days of purposeful conversation, connection, and celebration.

The summit takes place from April 27-29 at Destino Pacha Ibiza Resort.
 
The summit today announces the first details of the summit agenda, a carefully crafted programme co-hosted by Pete Tong & Jaguar (both from BBC Radio 1), which aims to highlight best practices in core values to an industry emerging and re-building following the devastating impact of the global pandemic.

Adopting a no-panel policy for the first time in the history of the summit, IMS Ibiza Summit 2022 has curated a series of keynotes, presentations, conversations, workshops and sessions with industry thought-leaders, exploring the most important topics and themes facing our industry today.
