Unity gain is all about matching the input level to the output level in a device or signal chain. In this spirit, BC#9 and Paper Dragon, both seasoned vets of the US and UK bass scenes, have teamed up to drop a transatlantic jungle roller. With rolling drums, a deep, undulating bassline, and rave stabs that nod to its roots, this instrumental track is built to get your feet moving and your speakers shaking. Dropping on DnB United Records, this collab is sure to introduce both artists to new fans worldwide.
BC#9, aka Jason Bakes, is a DJ and producer hailing from Colorado, USA. He’s known for blending organic and digital sounds to create fresh vibes for a new generation of listeners. He’s also the host and founder of the podcast ‘The United State of Drum+Bass’. His 2014 debut Drum & Bass album ‘Aquasonica’ featured tracks like ‘Going On’ and ‘Liquid Blue,’ earning him both critical and commercial success.
Having spent time in the UK in the ’90s, BC#9 experienced the birth of the bass scene firsthand, falling in love with the early days of Jungle, Drum & Bass, and Hardcore. The rest, as they say, is history. He’s also the founder of DnB United Records, which celebrates the art, culture, and evolving sound of DnB and Jungle worldwide. His work has appeared on labels like Spring Tube, Chic, Sony, and BrainThrust Records, among others.
Paper Dragon, on the other hand, has been making waves with their high-quality, forward-thinking dance music. They’re carving out their own niche, fearlessly bringing a fresh and original take to the jungle and DnB scene. The Bristol-based electronic collective, made up of Bruce Turner, Kris Burton, and Jonathan Savage, seamlessly blend enticing old-school vibes with a modern ear for jungle and breaks. With a combined wealth of high-end production experience, they’ve collaborated with big names like U2, Kate Bush, Massive Attack, Rick Rubin, Brian Eno, Underworld, and more.
Their music has solidified their place in the bass music scene, earning widespread recognition. Their single ‘Reach’ was named BBC Radio 1’s Coldest Record by Jeremiah Asiamah and Hottest Record by Clara Amfo, while ‘Holding On’ got some major love from My Nu Leng at Love Saves the Day this year. Their collab with Grafix, ‘Forget the Rain,’ racked up over 1.7 million Spotify streams and got tons of support from BBC Radio 1 and KISS FM. And with ‘Be Free’ nearing 2.1 million Spotify streams, Paper Dragon’s rise shows no signs of slowing down.
DnB United Records, founded by BC#9, is all about celebrating the art, culture, and evolving sound of DnB and Jungle on a global scale. Since its start in 2013 as a website for artist interviews, album reviews, and guest mixes, it’s grown into a team of industry pros who work hard to support releases across the scene, helping many artists achieve success. They’ve collaborated with acts like T & Sugah, Maduk, Jaguar Skills, D.R.K., Tin Spider, Deadcode, Kisscut, Wilkinson, Toronto Is Broken, and many more.
‘Unity Gain’ will be followed by vocal-led remixes from Dope Ammo & Jasmine Knight and Kravitz & Chez. This exciting project is a true collaboration among talented artists and friends, and it’s one to keep an eye on.
