John Graham is a household name in electronica circles. Whether in Tilt, Hybrid, as Skanna or Quivver, his contribution to the electronic music scene is undeniable. Now, he lands yet again on UK’s legendary Bedrock with a showstopper of an EP in ‘One Darker’, the progressive stalwart proves to be in top form.

Both tracks on ‘One Darker’ are provided by Graham himself. In fact, they are both different takes on the same track, but the contrast is ample, and that on its own is quite a feat. In the original take (as Quivver) he opts for a 4:4 take on deep, progressive house. Narcotic as ever, the warm groove is bound to make hips sway. The British maestro expertly crafts an earthquake of a low end, while beautiful shapes and forms make themselves tangible, in what already feels like a classic, straight from the future.

Always the innovator, John puts his recently revived Skanna alias to down for a masterclass in breaks & D&B. Prior to his recent remix of Sasha’s ‘Rooms’, Skanna had been dormant for almost 20 years. Now back with a flourish, he reworks ‘One Darker’ in a timeless fashion. The zero-gravity remix feels like a living, sentient creation. Featuring a growler of a bassline that contracts and expands at will, while the same shapes from the original materialize in shifting patterns for a seductive take on the genre.

One Darker’ feels like a unique blend of past, present and future, like only someone like Quivver can provide. Not to mention that it proves that breaks is making a much-needed comeback to the main stage, this release is not only a testament of John Graham’s legacy in electronica, but it is yet another display of quality, Bedrock sound.

Danny Olivera. Danny Loko. DNYO. One of these should ring a bell by now. With a career that spans over a decade, and releases on household imprints like LNOE, Anjunadeep and microCastle, the Brazilian artist is one of the most avant-garde producers on the scene.

‘Flare’, the opening track, is nothing short of beautiful. In a track that sways between darkness and light, Danny takes us by the hand, as he shows us colours that have never been seen. We feel the fever rising, as we toss and turn following the trek of an arpeggiated riff that wonders straight into this mercurial drop, where emotions collide.

The lead track comes in two astounding variations. In the ‘Beatless Mix’, Danny strips ‘Flare’ right down to its soul, in what feels like everlasting bliss. But it is in Petar Dundov’s hands that ‘Flare’ becomes an absolute showstopper. Trading in the original structure for a jet-black framework, the Croatian maestro crafts a masterpiece that feels timeless. On a class of its own, this remix takes everything that makes ‘Flare’ an instant classic, and lifts it up all the way to the heavens and beyond. A slow-burner for the ages, it’s just one of those tracks that awaken a new sensation. A revelation of sorts, If you will.

On the flip side, we find ‘Children’. A stark place, worthy of the most cavernous basements. A place where lost souls meander, looking for their true meaning. Hopeless voices sway in and out, contrasting against a rock-solid bassline. While the concept might sound familiar, Danny certainly treads a new path, creating his own and unique brand of progressive house.

‘Flare’ is a perfect example of the high-quality music progressive house lovers have come to expect, and shows why the India-based imprint Juicebox has become a tastemaker in its own right. Moody. Broody. Emotional. Call it what you will. But we call it DNYO.

Score: 8.5/10

Bedrock turned 20 last year, and they dive into 2019 in full force as they unveil their brand new BurakiSilk EP’. A hybrid, a sublime cross-breed, it is techno that delves into progressive territory. “Some people do for years and years the same. I like to change, I like new challenges and this is a new challenge for me with a different setting” says its creator. As Buraki, Belgian techno stalwart, Marco Bailey taps into a deeper well.

‘Silk’, the title track, is built around a techno frame, a pulsating arpeggio signals what’s about to come. It’s past midnight somewhere. Smoke and throbbing lights intertwine, as a gorgeous lead blazes through the track, consuming everything on its path with distinct grace. Moving through the wind like a thread of silk, as filtered hats bring forth a ravers nostalgia.

The next two tracks are variations on the same melodic techno growler. ‘Cordoba’ is brought to life with two mixes ‘Into the Light’ and ‘Into the Dark’ mixes. The first mix, ‘Into the Light’, showcases a spiraling moment, skywards, as you get to experience the warmth of the sun one more time.

The closer, ‘Cordoba (Into the Dark)’, Marco Bailey takes a detour into the shadows. The Belgian mastermind replaces the synth that led the way in the previous version, trading it for processed percussion and reverb drenched effects, for a more obscure take that proves to be just as powerful.

Both versions provide for extremely emotional rides, and balance themselves perfectly with the peak-time raw energy that can be found in the title track, ‘Silk’. Buraki finds Marco treading a new path as he shows us a more personal sound.

Forerunners – Magnetic Quartz’ EP (onedotsixtwo) https://datatransmission.co/single-reviews/forerunners-magnetic-quartz-ep-onedotsixtwo/ Mon, 29 Oct 2018 07:44:47 +0000 https://datatransmission.co/?p=44834 ’Magnetic Quartz’ has something for every progressive house lover. UK imprint onedotsixtwo has been in style all year long, and their latest release is one of their best so far.

Label boss Tripswitch has been carefully curating a unique brand of pure progressive house, and ‘Magnetic Quartz’ by Forerunners is a wonderful addition to the catalogue.

Just right from the start, “not too hard, not too fast” in the words of Hernán Cattaneo. A gorgeous affair, where intricately arranged percussive patterns light up the road that leads to absolute bliss. This is no doubt this is Forerunners at their finest.

In a time when we hear a lot of producers going for massive ‘hands-in-the-air’ breakdowns where the melody can shine brighter than the sun, Forerunners goes for the least travelled road. A magic trick, he saves his best for the absolute last.

One of the coolest lines to grace dance floors in a while, comes out to play right at the drop.

An absolute piece of ear candy, that just fits into the groove like a glass slipper. Boy, do I wish I had written this one. I have no doubt ‘Magnetic Quartz’ will prove to be a hand raising moment for some time to come.

It’s funny that I quoted Hernán Cattaneo earlier. Since, on the flip side, we’ve got two absolute A listers teaming up in the shape of label boss Tripswitch, and none other than the maestro himself, Hernán Cattaneo.

A deeper, more seductive vibe takes over on this one, as the duo crank up the tasty latin sounding percussion to 11 on the dial, sending the melody line to the foreground to paint a wide, cinematic landscape. A versatile track, that will works for sunsets, warm-ups, and main sets alike.

Overall ’Magnetic Quartz’ has something for every progressive house lover. Whether it’s the lush original by Arizona’s very own Forerunners, or the dreamy, sexier take by Tripswitch and Hernan, you’ll be hearing this one everywhere you go.

An EP that keeps on playing loud and clear, even once the party is over. Even if it’s inside your head.
