Renegade Riddims: Complice

2005 was the year that DJ and Producer Complice found and fell in love with Drum & Bass. At that time, Portugal didn’t really have a very big Drum & Bass scene but he was blessed to be born and live in Porto where Drum & Bass parties used to happen every 2 weeks and it was really a small niche. Fast forward 2 years down the line and he has made his debut behind the decks under the name of Dogz United, an alias with which he has supported the likes of Andy C, DJ Hype, Friction, Noisia, Icicle, Ed Rush & Optical, Alix Perez, A.M.C., Commix, Goldie, Black Sun Empire, Limewax, The Sect, Cooh and Sub Focus, just to name a few. 

There were 4 years where he had countless gigs until he decided to leave his hometown to make a drastic move and make a base for himself in London. Adulthood ensued and got in the way but he managed to come back to his passion and in 2019 he formed EKOU Recordings together with Paulo Sousa. The label has been running for almost 3 years and they have been releasing music from people like Molecular, Rizzle, Creatures, Ill Truth, Nymfo, Division, Phentix, NickBee, A K A, Evolved, Glyph and Moytra, amongst others. Their sound is more focused on the deeper side of Drum & Bass but touches on some of the heavier rollers’ territory too. It comes as no surprise that Complice takes his biggest influences from the likes of Hyroglifics, Visages, DLR, Invadhertz, NickBee, DoT, Noisia and Skylark. 

Complice has released music in the past under the pseudo name of Photon, and has been featured on his own imprint on two separate occasions and also Boey Audio. His latest track was a collaboration with A K A named ‘Misconception’, which was part of Ekou’s ‘Full Spectrum VA‘ and dropped in February of this year.

You will find his sets are fully loaded with energy, along with some 3 deck blends and a lot of music already released and forthcoming on EKOU Recordings!

We’ve been working together pretty much since the birth of EKOU Recordings so this is another mix that has evolved from conversations over the years and I’m very excited to present Complice as our next instalment on Renegade Riddims. The mix features music from a variety of different producers already highlighted, a few more people and some dubs…if you dare to enter into the darkside of Drum & Bass then this is for you!

Sum up this mix in 10 words…

Energetic, eclectic, a journey through my perspective of Drum and Bass.

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

It’s hard to pick just one but one of the tracks I’ve been playing the most recently is Framer – Tangled Shore (Amoss Remix).

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

A good selection of tracks enables very good transitional moments which ask for the fast style of mixing used with some 3 deck mixes enriching the path the listener follows all the way through it.

Tell us about your next EP?

I don’t have a next released planned but I’ve just released a track in collaboration with A K A last month on Ekou Recordings.

What have you got coming up?

In the near future, I’ve been focusing on my label (Ekou) a lot and I’ve been managing to get some gigs going on. Doing a Goat Shed show in April, DJing in Noisia’s last show in Portugal in the same month and I’ll have a gig in May in Bristol but I can’t disclose much information on that one just yet. But it will be a big night.

When was the last time you actually raved?

I literally just got home from playing a Delirium night in Brighton together with Molecular, Visages, Fedi Minikin so this was the last one I actually went to a proper party.
