For the twenty-third episode of ‘Blanka Barbara Welcomes’ show on Data Transmission Radio, I invite an incredible DJ and producer – Katrin Souza – to showcase a superb guest mix in the second half of the show. During the first hour of the show, I present captivating, brand new, real gems of the vast genre of house. Another memorable sonic journey for you all!

You can listen back to the show and read the interview with Katrin below…

Blanka Barbara welcomes Katrin Souza

INTERVIEW:

Blanka Barbara: Hello Katrin, thank you for taking part in Blanka Barbara Welcomes.

Katrin Souza: Hello Blanka and hello to all listeners. I would like to speak in audio, but my English is very weak. Therefore, my answers are through Google Translate. I just want to wish all the listeners and you all a wonderful mood. Thank you for the invitation and wish you all the best, I love your music, Blanka. I’ve played your music several times in my mixes and I also enjoy listening to it on Spotify. I also listened to your radio programs several times, you have an amazing hypnotic velvety voice.

BB: Thank you so much, Katrin, for your kind words. Let’s start with your beginnings in music. How did you become a music producer and when did you start to DJ?

KS: I began to write music in 2009. At night, I studied everything myself, and during the day I worked part-time at a permanent job. My two children were waiting for me at home. Just a couple of months ago I learned how to play pioneer DJ. I usually mix with Ableton Live for various radio shows. And I learned to play live as a DJ only 2 months ago. I have already performed in front of the public three times, I really liked it. I want to perform a lot and show the world beautiful music. Not only my music but the music of artists from all over the world. People need to hear this beauty, and my goal is to introduce listeners to talented musicians from all over the world. DJing will help me in this wonderful business. That’s why I learned to play.

BB: You have accumulated a vast knowledge of dance music production over the years. Do you have the most treasured tool in the studio and what is so good about it?

KS: In my studio, there is only a computer, headphones, monitors and a midi keyboard and a sound card. Almost forgot my cat. He always sits on my work chair. I have a lot of synthesizers and plugins on my computer. Basically, my favourite plugins are Diva Synths (fat sound), Love, Serum, Repro and Arturia. For processing, I use plugins from Universal Audio, Fab Filter, Arturia Fx Collection, Native Instruments, and Valhalla.

BB: How, in your opinion, has the progressive house music scene developed and changed throughout the past decade?

KS: It is difficult for me to answer this question, because at the beginning of my career, I wrote music in the trance style, then gradually moved to progressive house, deep house, and melodic house. It seems to me that music becomes more and more interesting every year, there is a mixture of styles, new styles, and new performers are born. Over time, in my opinion, progressive house becomes more interesting in terms of mixing. Sometimes I wonder when I listen to this or that track or remix how the author thought of doing this or that move in processing. I am very happy when I listen to good music. I am very inspired. Music is such a cool influence, I feel like the world would be empty without music. I am happy that I live in the present time, thanks to which I have the opportunity to create music, as well as meet other musicians and DJs.

BB: Every gig is different and unique. Has any of them been the most memorable that you ever played?

KS: The fact is that I performed in front of the public as a DJ this is only three times. My first gig was 2 days after I learned to play like a DJ, live. It was very funny. People were having fun and dancing. whistled and clapped. They asked for track listings. I myself felt very good, marvelling at the lack of excitement, because all the DJs I know talked about stress and a lot of excitement before and during performances. I was calm as if another person had moved into me. ha ha

BB: What plans do you have for the rest of the year and into the future?

KS: I have plans for the near future. I want to DJ more and write an EP for a friend’s label from New York, experimenting, and looking for a new sound. Also, half a year ago, I made a new alias for my new side project, in which I write completely different music, far from club music. On June 2, I will release an album of 12 tracks in this project. Styles such as synth wave, retro wave, chillwave, vaporwave, lo-fi, and hip-hop). Here is the name of my future album – “Aømioomørï – Warm Hovel”. I would be glad if the listeners would be interested in hearing me differently in a new sound. This project is exactly what I did. The most interesting thing is that my eldest son followed in my footsteps and also began to write music. We write collabs with him. Also, my daughter has an interest in music, she also draws anime to music, she is completely self-taught, like me. It was she who inspired me to create a new project. She also edits videos for my YouTube channel and TikTok. It’s really great when children are in your work, in action. I want to wish all the listeners a wonderful mood and thank you for listening to me. And also thank you Blanka. for the opportunity to tell a little about me

BB: Thank you so much, Katrin, for sharing your story with us.

We interview the Catalan artist Blanca Ross, taking advantage of the launch of her new ” Hybrid Set ” that integrates a multitude of disciplines around the future of art (and techno). A national figure with an international career, Blanca tells us where her career is at, her concerns and her future goals. First, to focus on production and the launch of her new label Between Polarities next month.

1. You recently premiered in your latest stream a new hybrid set in which you address the future and the spirit of art, integrating “poetry, voice, electronic music, Gregorian chants, visuals, live music production and conceptual fashion”. How did the idea of integrating such different elements come about and what do they mean to you?

I believe that art can be expressed in many ways, as every language emits a frequency and generates an impact on our consciousness. It can be music, colour, visuals or costumes. I recently discovered the term ‘total artwork, created by Richard Wagner, who in his operas integrated six different arts: writing, singing, painting, dance, sculpture and architecture. It is a way of communicating with the environment by treating these disciplines horizontally. As an artist, I try to be aware of the arts I interact with and give them a sense of their own. In my opinion, this is the way to create a coherent and singular identity.

2. You also took the opportunity to present two new singles: “Internal Data” and “Programming Higher States”. Your sound dances between deep pulses and psytrance and techno energy. How do you work in the studio? What are you working on now?

In my case, the compositions emerge from a vital need to express something internal, a concept that translates into a new sound language. I am currently preparing a psytechno live set of my own productions, in which I will explore my voice more, and include keyboard and visuals. My aim is to find a personal way to mix techno and psytrance, and to go along with a visual techno narrative. I’m finding it harder and harder to find tracks that express this discourse, so now I want to spend a lot more time in the studio and release my own vision of club music. It is for this reason that I have also decided to launch my own label ‘Between Polarities’ which will be released in October.

What I am most passionate about is exploring new fields within music, without pigeonholing myself into one genre or profile. The possibilities are so wide that I am constantly experimenting. For example, in recent months, I have been working on the musical composition of the book The Erotics of Creation, written by Ivan Rohe. The poetic text inspires a sound and musical space featuring piano and touches of electronics. The presentations of the book will be small concerts that we will give from November onwards in different hermitages and intimate spaces around Spain.

We are currently seeing techno creeping into the main stage of big festivals and other more “popular” venues, and it is becoming more and more popular. What do you think of this trend?

The emergence of techno in the 80s influenced some later genres. That’s why it’s still present on the scene. The techno we listen to today has been updated to new sounds and homogenised with other trends, and although little of the original techno remains, many of us have been able to connect with the dynamics of techno today.

Unfortunately, in many cities in Spain, for example in my hometown Girona, the underground scene was replaced by other genres about fifteen years ago, leaving very little space to discover another kind of sound. That’s why I think it’s very important to always give a voice to different artists and genres, regardless of what the trend is, because it’s in diversity that musical and cultural richness is born.

3. In the last few days you have announced some dates during August in Barcelona or Coruña. Will it be possible to experience this Hybrid Set? Can you give us a preview of other upcoming dates in our country or abroad?

After thinking about it and comparing it a lot, I have taken the decision to dedicate the next few months to music production and the development of the psytechno live set, pausing for a while the DJ profession. I have gone through different processes this year, and the consequences of the pandemic affected me creatively and emotionally, especially in this last period. That’s why now I want to dedicate time to be able to offer a different kind of performance, focusing my work on composing and live production.

4. Your single “Flying over the southearn oceans” is part of the bso of the film ‘Jusqu’ici, tout va’ by Francesc Cuéllar, available on Filmin. Have you ever scored a film before? Do you remember any soundtrack that had a special impact on you?

It’s the first time I have direct access to cinema, although I had previously participated in the sound design of different plays and in some commercials. Listening to techno in the cinema surprised me because of the great definition and volume it can reach (much better than some clubs). I realised how little use it is given this genre in cinema, and its great possibilities.

I remember that the BSO of Interstellar had a great impact on me when I listened to it in the cinema, especially for the balance between sound and silence. I think the hook of the song is one of the most outstanding melodies of 21st century cinema.

We know about your studies in audiovisual communication and your work in this sector, which gives you a very broad perspective. What is the relationship between video or cinema and electronic music for you?

My studies in Audiovisuals expanded my knowledge and taught me all the possibilities offered by combining audio and sound. These are two disciplines that have fascinated me since I discovered video clips because of their ability to expand the senses. I am becoming more and more interested and curious to delve into the world of sound as a post-production tool.

Two years ago I started working with visual artists like Acid Thermal, Eclipse Lunar Techno, a vj collective, and also with other artists like Vlaama and Efrén Mur. My next goal is, together with the live set, to create a visual story in line with the musical narrative.

5. You’ve been doing this for a decade now, and your style and concerns have been changing over time. What is your assessment of what you’ve experienced and how do you face the future? Any goals on the horizon that you want to share with us?

It’s been several years with a clear evolution curve until I found my own musical identity. Working as an independent artist allows me to have a lot of freedom of decision and exploration, but that also means that the road has been lonely, abrupt at times, without being able to count on a team, an agency that could support my artistic career.

Now I find myself immersed in this new step, focused above all on music production. I think that this project will represent a qualitative leap compared to my previous experience, and although inevitably all change brings uncertainty, I trust in the future, in intuition and in music, which always accompanies me.

Thank you so much Blanca!

Mucky Weekender Music festival – curated by Dub Pistols’ legendary frontman Barry Ashworth – returns for its third year this weekend (9th & 10th of September), to a stunning location set within 28 acres of private parkland near Winchester.

The festival is named after one of Dub Pistols’ biggest and best-selling singles, ‘Mucky Weekend’. The band decided to create and host their own festival in 2019, using it as a way to connect with their fans, The Pistolero family, and showcase both established and new musical artists over the two days.

World-class DJs and live performers have been carefully curated to maximise the party vibe, with some of the best music, past, present and future. Stages will feature House Icon Robert Owens & X-Press 2, The Prodigy’s Leeroy Thornhill, Krafty Kuts brings his King Of The Beats project with Freestylers and Plump DJs, The Clash/BAD’s Don Letts and many more. The main stage has live performances from festival hosts Dub Pistols, Dreadzone, Hollie Cook, The Hempolics, Eva Lazarus & many more including stage takeovers from Jungle Cakes Ed Solo, Deekline and Benny Page, Faith Fanzine feat Terry Farley & Co and Modcast takeover featuring Eddie Piller, Rocky, Dean Thatcher and Wendy May.

The site in Winchester could not be more beautiful, set in 28 acres of private parkland and stunning countryside. Says Barry, “Our ethos is very much one of ‘leave no trace’, and judging by our first year it’s an ethos the crowd fully embrace too. Our last site was left cleaner on departure than when we entered it.”

Whilst soaking up the atmosphere Mucky Weekenders will also be treated to an array of street performers, including magic, comedy and an extra special art installation nestled in the woods called “The Shack”, created especially for the festival by Arlen Figgis, son of renowned British director Mike Figgis and 2022 latest stage addition The Pirate Ship.

To celebrate and get their fans hyped for the weekend, Mucky Weekender recently took over Data Transmission Radio for the entire day. The takeover features mixes from The Dub Pistols, Altern8, Uncle Dugs, Deekline & Ed Solo, Ragga Twins and Leeroy Thornhill to name a few. If you haven’t listened back yet or need some music for travelling to and from the event, the playlist is below!

Twinflame & Rozegarden are fresh off their debut Splash House Performance & also sitting with the #1 Tech House release in the world.

If you’ve been keeping your ear to the underground or listening to Data Transmission Radio on 3rd Friday of the Month, chances are you’ve heard of the rising duo Twinflame & Rozegarden. Hailing from Southern California, the two producers have been working tirelessly over the years to craft their sound of sexy, groove-oriented House music influenced by labels like Defected, Glasgow Underground, Simma Black, and LoveJuice. With a string of releases on LoveJuice, Motive Records, Top Shelf Disco, and Amplified Records and artist support from major players like Dombresky, Mark Knight, Sam Divine, George Mensah, Jess Bays, Sammy Porter, and Idris Elba, the boys are poised for a big second half of 2022.

Drake Atlee, aka Twinflame, is of Filipino and Syrian descent and music has been an integral part of his life as long as he can remember. The term “Twinflame” is a reference to the deepest, most powerful connection two souls can have.

As Drake explains it, “the connection with another is like a mirror in which the two reflect each other’s deepest desires, insecurities, and shadows in an effort to become whole again”.

Coupled with Twinflame’s calling to bring his brand of dance music to the world, and a path of enlightenment offered by the healing powers of psychedlics, Twinflame has chosen to shine his light to help others live a life fueled by love and passion.

Cameron Rosales, the latter meaning “Collection of Roses”, adopted the name Rozegarden as a nod to his Spanish inheritance. Similar to Twinflame, Rozegarden has been on a path of enlightenment. Earlier in Cameron’s life, as he was losing his battle with alcoholism, he came to a crossroads with a tough decision to make: clean his act up or go down a path that could permanently harm his life.

Music had been engraved in his personality since childhood: having family ties to Funk and R&B, as well as relatives in the performing arts industry. But at this crossroads staying alive and healthy was his only concern. House music entered his life in the most unexpected way possible: when Rosales moved into sober living just outside of LA he was introduced to DJing by spinning old House records to pass the time in the recovery home. Cameron quickly fell in love with the way house music made him feel in an extremely lonely time full of self-reflection.

Shortly after Twinflame and Rozegarden’s individual journeys intertwined with each other, they made it their mission to share the joy of House music with the world while staying true to their bodies and minds. Beyond working tirelessly in the studio and gigging from coast to coast, they’ve been busy building their record label Top Shelf Disco. And with all of that grit and determination, the boys have just finished playing their first-ever performance at Splash House in Palm Springs, CA.

Fully dedicated to music, with almost a decade as a DJ and six years as a producer and broadcaster (currently with the ‘Sensations’ podcast), Blanca Ross has demonstrated her musical complexity through her DJ sets (Techno, Psytrance) and productions (Deep House, Melodic Techno). Her sessions are characterised by a search for balance between psychedelic, melodic and industrial sounds, creating a new subgenre called Psytechno.

Blanca Ross is one of the few female artists in the world bringing the Psytrance genre into the Techno scene. With innovative spiritual sets, she seeks synergies with Techno, Hard Techno and Trance, dominating the frequency spectrum and creating a dynamic journey for each type of session.

In the time of her audiovisual and multimedia degree, Blanca started out in television and radio for a music magazine from 2010 to 2016. Continuing her passion for radio and establishing her voice in the electronic music scene, she has created her own podcast (‘Sensations’). The podcast began in 2016, and its style has evolved over time, along with Blanca’s, reaching more than 27,000 streams and 600 downloads on Soundcloud and Itunes.

During the pandemic, her podcast was streamed on Twitch by the City Hall Barcelona club to provide exposure to the electronic music and nightlife scene, with Eclipse Lunar Techno audiovisual collective as VJs to create a more complete sensorial experience. It also gives space to B2B with emerging talents that connect with the same vision and taste of music.

Blanca Ross is an independent artist from the small city of Girona, in the region of Catalonia, in the northeast of Spain. Over the last ten years, the underground scene has been disappearing there, replaced by more commercial genres, which leave very little space for those looking for other types of sounds. That is why one of Blanca’s aims for 2022 is to give these genres the opportunity to become better known, widening her podcast’s international presence in over 10 countries and creating new audiences who love and listen to underground electronic music.

Data Transmission is the official radio host of Sensations Podcast in the United Kingdom on 3rd Week of the Month at 11pm, next Show Thursday 17th March.

After broadcasting for a total of 18 years, not for profit, Select will become the only FM radio station in London to cater exclusively to House & Electronic Music. This will be a strong platform to help support events, artists and labels within the dance music community.

The Select FM schedule boasts a collective of talented DJs, and presenters who are already establishing their names within the dance music community, be it through releasing music or hosting events.

Select FM

The daily listener reach for Underground radio stations is often underestimated. Radio support for underground music and underrepresented artists is needed now more than ever, with mainstream stations focusing on set playlists and specialist shows often supporting mainly commercial music. Select will offer smaller independent labels and artists an alternative route for radio plays, YouTube, website and social media features.

In the coming months, Select FM will be launching new initiatives supporting young people who want to work within the dance music industry. This will include DJ workshops, radio programming courses, social media planning and insights into the day to day running of a radio station.

Select’s academy programme launches in 2022, this will utilize their creative space giving young people and underrepresented individuals a kick start within the music industry. The house and electronic scene have always been known to send a positive message and they want to relay that message to young people.

You can track progress on all socials @selectradioapp

It’s time to turn on your radio and lock into 94.4FM
