DBL-C’s Top 5 Plugins for March
Share
DBL-C, the seasoned Canadian producer now based in London, UK brings to the scene a fresh proposition that has been in the making for some time. Not only a producer, he’s also the head of Back It Up Records and an expert DJ. DBL-C’s experience and know-how propel him to deliver unique productions and sets that entice the senses. If not the only one, perhaps one of the few DJ’s with the needed understanding of groove and skill to fuse house and tech house in an immaculate seamless manner… as if they always belonged together.
His DJ sets open new possibilities from a different perspective. His charisma is soft-spoken and tentative. When he’s behind the decks in a very unselfish way, he will take you on a journey that is about you, your vibe and what you are feeling, therefore, leaving you on a new level of high!
With the release of “Trippin”, we ask him to pick his top plugin picks for March 2020.
1. Wavesfactory TrackSpacer
TrackSpacer has become an essential tool for me and is a must-have for all producers. It’s a 32-band equalizer plugin that creates space in a mix by “carving” the frequencies from one track to make space for similar frequencies in another track. TrackSpacer analyses the input signal of the sidechain and reduces the needed frequencies in real-time from the track where you insert it. This is extremely useful for any situation especially when I’m trying to get the kick and bass to sit together just right. Well worth the investment.
2. Mastering the Mix Levels
Levels is my go-to metering plugin at the moment. It’s an effective and precise tool that identifies any technical issues in my mix so I can quickly resolve and spend more time being creative. It allows me to monitor the Dynamic Range, True Peak, LUFS and Stereo Field all in one area which eliminates having to use multiple plugins.
3. Devious Machines Duck
Duck is a simple and powerful “creative LFO tool”. Although the most common use is to get a ducking or sidechain compression effect, Duck can be used in other creative ways. The graphical envelope makes it easy for me to design my own custom volume shape which repeats itself with speed and depth of my liking. This allows me to create new rhythms with chords and percussive elements.
4. Inphonik RX950
Inphonik has created the RX950 effect plugin which models the AD/DA conversion process found in the original AKAI S950. It’s a great emulation that gives you the sound and character of the legendary 12-bit sampler. I find it works really well on drums by cranking the Input Gain to get that warmth and grit but it can also be used on any instrument. A key feature for me is the Filter knob which emulates the S950’s steep low-pass filter.
5. W.A. Production Pumper 2
Pumper 2 is a powerful 3-in-1 multi-effect plugin. Compressor, saturator and stereo imager.
The GUI is simple and easy to use. I find Pumper 2 works really well on drums if I need to give them more of a punch and stand out in a mix. It also makes synths and keys sound fatter. Definitely worth checking out.
