Jess Bays – as well as being a personal favourite of ours here at DT – is a name synonymous with SNEAK, the weekly house night at London clubbing institution, XOYO.

As resident DJ at SNEAK from the very beginning 10 years ago, Jess Bays has seen it all, and boy has her career rocketed since. She went on to host a weekly show Capital Dance and release on such credible labels as Defected and Good Company, with notable releases including ‘Real Love’ with Kelli-Leigh and Temptation with Poppy Baskcomb.

Jess Bays at SNEAK at XOYO

Ahead of the mammoth 10 Years of SNEAK at XOYO on 29 November 2024 – its first ever Friday night slot at the venue – we caught up with Jess to look back at her time at SNEAK to find out what tracks have smashed the dancefloor over the past decade.

Crank up the volume and get stuck in below to Jess Bays’ Top 10 SNEAK tunes off all time.

Armand Van Helden – I Want Your Soul

This record has always been a staple moment in my SNEAK sets at XOYO. It’s usually something I play towards the end of my sets to really give the crowd a big moment towards the end.

Flashmob – Need In Me

One of my favourite classic deep house records of all time. The big vocal moment in the breakdown just sets the dance floor on fire.

Patrick Topping – Forget

Something from my earlier days sets at XOYO for SNEAK. It’s an absolute anthem from Patrick Topping and it works every time.

MD Express – God Made Me Phunky (Jess Bays Remix)

This remix from my back catalogue is always something that works, especially with the younger crowd. It’s really blowing up on TikTok, so they recognise it super well from there. I love it so much for the original record by Mike Dunn is as old as me! And now the remix really helps educate the next generation of ravers to music that they not necessarily have heard.

Sammy Porter & Jess Bays – Devotion (Jess Bays VIP Mix)

Here’s my VIP edit of a record I wrote with my lovely friend Sammy Porter back at the very start of my production journey. It’s a classic vocal from Soul2Soul that we managed to get cleared. I love it! I’ll defo be spinning it on the SNEAK 10th Birthday.

Weiss – Feel My Needs

This track is a proper summer anthem that always brings an injection of feel-good vibes to any dance floor. It’s always on my playlist for SNEAK parties!

Roberto Surace – Joys

Easily one of my favourite records from the last few years. It really had a big moment when it was released via Defected a few years ago and the bassline on it paired with a great sample hook just works every time.

Nightcrawlers – Push The Feeling On (MK Dub remix)

One of the records that really pushed MK to the top of his game and I struggle to find a raver or music enthusiast that does not LOVE this piece of music!

MK & Sonny Fodera – One Night (ft. Raphaella)

When two heavyweights collide only special things happen! Two of my favourite DJ/Producers in the world only means magic is going to happen and ‘One Night’ really does achieve that.

Beyond Chicago x Majestic x Alex Mills – Million Dollar Bill

One of the greatest Whitney Houston vocals ever brought into the current times by three of my very talented friends teaming up. Alex Mills’s huge vocal talent on this one just bring the Beyond Chicago lads and Majestic’s production to an extra level!

Catch Jess Bays at SNEAK 10 Years alongside Gem Precious, Jay Forster, Janika Tenn and more at XOYO on Friday 29 November. For tickets visit  xoyo.co.uk

Award-winning DnB group SaSaSaS has been one of the most sought-after acts in the business since first performing together in 2014. A Drum & Bass supergroup of sorts, SaSaSaS comprises MCs Harry Shotta, Shabba D and DJ Phantasy. The original lineup also included late MCs Stormin’ and Skibadee, whose departure has left an unifiable void in the scene but has also inspired the continued success of SaSaSaS in tribute to its absent founding members. Following a sold-out show in London in 2022, the trio bring their ‘Scarefest’ to one of the capital’s favourite late-night venues in XOYO. Promising a frightfully fantastic night of UK Bass, Drum & Bass, Jungle, and everything in between, Shotta, Shabba D and Phantasy are steadying themselves for one of London’s standout Halloween events. For more info and tickets, visit https://www.xoyo.co.uk/clubnights.

Ahead of their ‘Halloween Scarefest’ at XOYO London on Friday, 27th October, SaSaSaS serve up their top 5 MC-focused DnB heaters to get you ready for a night of ghoulishly good bangers:

Chase & Status x Bou ft Irah x Flowdan x Trigga x Takura – Baddadan

This track has taken the UK by storm by highlighting the side of Drum & Bass that often gets overlooked: the MCs, the Microphone champions that entertain tens of thousands of people every weekend and have been doing so for years. SaSaSaS have been at the forefront of pushing MC Culture forward, and it makes us so happy to see this type of track get so much love from all walks of life.

SaSaSaS x Shabba D x Harry Shotta x Yzer x Tiny K x Inna x Westman x Endo x Kasha B x Manlyk Redz – 20 Seconds To Comply

With so much great talent coming through the Drum & Bass scene, it was only right we picked a handful of the best talent out there and brought everyone together on one song. 20 Seconds literally gives every MC/Vocalist 20 Seconds to do their thing, and they do, showcasing their skills on the mic. That day in the studio was so good; seeing the positive energy in the room and everyone backing each other and helping each other was a moment we will all never forget.

Bou x B Live 247 (aka Evil B) – F8ck Jump Up

Evil B, aka Blive, is so skilful at what he does. He is one of the few MCs that crosses musical genres, and his last album showcased his talent on a whole new level of not just being one of the best MCs in the game, but he could also record some amazing music. His latest outing alongside Bou has literally elevated him to whole new levels, with everyone singing his catchy hook F8ck Jump Up. It’s funny, but so many people look at Jump Up with a sneer, but deep down, they all REALLY LOVE IT…. and so they should; the energy that this music brings to the table is hard to match. Love may it reign.

Hedex x Eksman – Semi Automatic

Eksman, one of the best MCs to ever grace a mic, has captured a whole new audience with his catchy hook, Semi Automatic, even getting superstar DJs like Tiesto playing it in his sets. Just WOW!!!!… That is a moment right there, a moment to savour and when Tiesto played the song in front of 50,000 House & Techno ravers.

Another massive step forward for Vocal-led D&B, one which we are all here for.

SaSaSaS – Anthem

It’s a classic, but we couldn’t not mention Anthem…. The first cartoon-styled music video in D&B and also a track that has been sung back to us wherever we have played across the globe. To see so many people sing along with us to our song is such an amazing feeling. Released many years ago, it still gets played, streamed and purchased to this day. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT.

Firing up the bassbins and hitting you hard with a dose of raggamuffin junglist energy is what Ed Solo is all about. From Glastonbury to Canada’s Shambhala, from dirty Brixton back rooms to Spanish arenas, Ed has travelled the globe throwing down his unique brand of ruffneck bassline bravado for more than a decade.

Ed’s partnership with Jungle Cakes partner in crime Deekline has thrown up some of the most memorable tunes of the decade. The pair recently released the 15th edition of their Welcome to the Jungle series and have formed the incredibly successful Jungle Cakes Takeover collective with the likes of Benny Page and Serial Killaz.

Ed is set for a whirlwind double-header of events across XOYO’s London (13th) and newly launched Birmingham venues (28th) this month, seeing him fly the flag for Jungle Cakes in the capital and take the stage at the Weird & Wonderful Halloween Festival in Brum. You can find tickets & more info for London shows HERE and Birmingham shows HERE.

Ahead of two big gigs this month, Ed shares five of his top club cuts that guarantee to get the dancefloor hot underfoot:

Anaïs – Tek It Easy

It’s a motto I go by. Been rinsing this all year – solid tune. Also, I like Anaïs’s sound – we’ve been talking about getting on a track together since our meeting at Printworks. Watch this space…

General Degree – Traffic Blocking (Azule Bootleg)

One of the many great free downloads on Hypeddit. Anyone who knows me knows I love a bootleg. I chose this one because I like the original tune, and the remix slaps hard.

Ed Solo & MC Melo D – Bassline Growler

Not jungle, but one of my fave releases this year. If I had to pick another it would be Feel Good – Ed Solo because I love making feel good dnb. You will hear me drop my remixes of ‘Cold as Ice’, ‘Real Raver’, ‘Bassline Growler’ and I will be testing out my latest track ‘The Stinka’ this weekend.

Papa San – DJ Business (Diagnostix Remix)

Because it’s on Jungle Cakes and I like it, it’s a great tune.

Burt Cope – So Mi Like It

Love Burt’s take on the reggae ragga remixes. He’s got the re-rub sounding hyped whilst still keeping true to the original. Burt Cope is up and coming fast, smashing out these remixes and is one to watch out for.

You can catch Ed Solo at XOYO London for Jungle Cakes on 13th October and XOYO Birmingham for the Weird & Wonderful Halloween Festival on 28th October.

Scottish DnB Talent Ekwols Shares 10 Tracks That Shaped His Sound https://datatransmission.co/blog/scottish-dnb-talent-ekwols-shares-10-tracks-that-shaped-his-sound/ Tue, 19 Sep 2023 16:03:50 +0000 https://datatransmission.co/?p=69330 Edinburgh’s Ekwols shares his musical influences to mark his triumphant return to Evolution Chamber with his new single ‘Drowning’.

Edinburgh’s Ekwols triumphantly returns to Evolution Chamber with his latest track, ‘Drowning’. This Drum & Bass masterpiece defies conventions and pushes boundaries, showcasing Ekwols’ exceptional talent. The track takes listeners on a symphonic journey through emotion and sound, with captivating vocals and an interplay that keeps them hooked. ‘Drowning’ expresses gratitude to those who’ve been pillars of strength, encapsulating the profound impact of that one person who consistently pulls you back from the brink. You can buy/stream it here!

To mark the release of his latest bone-crunching single, Ekwols shares the ten tracks that have most influenced his sound and ultimately led to the sonic identity we’ve come to know and enjoy…

DJ Red Alert and Mike Slammer – In Effect The Remix

This track was on the very first ‘Rave tape’ I bought back in ’94 when I was about 10 or 11. It was called “Illegal Pirate Radio II”, a compilation on Strictly Hardcore/Strictly Underground, and The whole tape was full of insanely good breakbeat hardcore. In effect (The Remix) always stood out to me on that compilation as it had everything I could hope for in a track: massive breakbeats, scratching, a piano breakdown, pitched female vocals, and filthy hoovers. Fast forward about 30 years, and this still sounds amazing, and I still put all of these elements into my tracks and live sets.

The Prodigy – Break and Enter

Break and Enter is the opener for “Music for the Jilted Generation” and is a perfect example of setting a scene and creating a visceral, immersive experience through music. The heartbeat, the breathing, the glass smashing, you can feel you’re there, you can taste the danger, it’s illicit, it’s illegal, and it’s excellent. When I’m building ambiences and introductions, I aim for this level of immersion. The Prodigy nailed this at such a fundamental level I still get tense listening to it today. I also love that Baby D vocal!!

Rusty K – Riot

Rusty K, aka Rustam (one half of Magnetude), is a musical genius, and this was the first track I heard from him. I was producing other styles of music at the time, but hearing this was a turning point. I couldn’t believe the aggro, in-your-face energy and musicality he’d managed to transfer into a DNB track. It was way beyond anything I’d heard before. This influenced me to start seriously producing DNB, and ultimately, it led to the birth of “Ekwols”. Also, it probably goes without saying everything Rustam and James have done since as Magnetude has influenced me; every track they do blows my mind wide open – best in the game.

Blanck Mass – Dead Format

I’m a huge fan of Blanck Mass and his dark electronic soundscapes and soundtrack work. I’m also a massive horror movie fan and find that so much of his output recreates that feeling of tension and dread for me, which I love! Dead Format is incredible; it just starts at full intensity from the get-go. It’s built on this pounding tom riff and goes heavy on the feeling of impending doom. I love how he uses vocal cuts for a lot of his main leads, and I try to add that human element into my work as well. I find it can make a deeper connection with your listener than a synth lead.

Memtrix – Capsize

I spent so many years trying to reverse engineer and learn how Memtrix made this insane track. Absolutely incredible tune that blew me away when I heard it. The energy and approach here were very different to what was being done at the time, and the musicality was off the chart. There were so many layers, and it was so complex; it really set the bar for the musicality required in a track for me, and I’ve tried to meet that ever since. Still sounds so fresh, too; Memtrix, come back and give us some more DNB, please! 🙂

Pitchshifter – Subject to Status

I’m an electronic punk at heart and believe in merging and splicing genres. Pitchshifter were all of that combined on “Subject To Status”. I saw these guys perform this live around 2000, and it was pure energy, punk rock that you could dance to. I’ve also watched dance music over the past 20 years; the beats get harder, the moshpits have come in, this expression of energy and release, this was the same experience just coming at it from the other side. I love the attitude, the sneer, the message and the cynicism, the energy and the meeting of two worlds. I slam this on loud when I need inspiration to take a track to that next level of ferocity.

Rawtekk – Here’s To Them

This one gives me shivers every time I hear it: insane sound design, ethereal vocals, and esoteric feel with an aggressive edge. It brings everything I love about modern electronic music into a single piece of art. On top of that, it speaks directly to my gothic-horror-movie-loving dark soul! What I love most about this track, though, is that it doesn’t care about genre; this, to me, is a band of the future writing music at any tempo, for the emotion, through circuits and software. That is the lesson I took from these two. Incredible.

Task Horizon ft Mc Spyda – Shattered Self

Task Horizon are sent back from the future to show us how it’s going to be done. I picked this up in 2013, and it was so futuristic, heavy and technical, way more so than anything else at the time, and it melted my mind! On top of that, it’s also juxtaposed with this epic melodic intro and insane level of musicality. Love it! Now, nearly ten years later, it still punches equally hard today and STILL sounds like it’s a step ahead from a future planet, and I don’t know how they do that!!! For me, the influence I take from all of Task Horizon’s work is to go beyond what you’ve heard, take it as heavy as you can go and really. Don’t fear the unknown cos the future’s bright if we keep moving forward with open minds.

Ed Rush and Optical – Bacteria (Pendulum Remix)

It would be hard not to include this one, and I get a double bumper for being able to include both Ed Rush and Optical and Pendulum in one! The original Bacteria is one of the cornerstones of the neurofunk genre, and by the time I was DJing house parties and raves in ’03, it was already considered a classic. This was around about the same time Pendulum were using new technologies and turning DNB on its head with new levels of production and energy that hadn’t been heard before. When this remix dropped in ’04, it just destroyed the dance every time I played it. The combination of melting those massive high-energy drums with the dark, brooding, tense original – this is really the sonic aim of what I do as Ekwols. Thank you, and massive respect to the Dons!

Nine Inch Nails – Hurt (Johnny Cash cover)

Finally, this is pretty much the most emotional song I can think of, and it always gets the hairs on my arms standing up. Nine Inch Nails are one of my main songwriting influences, as Trent can do so much using so very little. Hurt is one of those songs – so simple but conveys such raw and bare human emotions. Couple that with Johnny Cash’s delivery at the end of his life, and this is one of the finest examples of capturing the human experience. This one reminds me music connects us all, and the more emotional and honest you can be in your music – the more impact you can have.

Undoubtedly two of the most exciting next-gen producers making moves in Drum & Bass of late, Pola & Bryson have shot onto the scene with their own carefully sculpted brand of melodic electronic music that centres around a stripped-back, organic sound palette. The massive success of ‘Complete’, ‘Tell You What I Did ft. Zitah’ and ‘Into The Night’ in 2022 have now been followed by a feature on dance music superstar Sub Focus’ latest album and their recent collaboration with Emily Makis’ Phoneline’. The latter has already cemented itself as their biggest release to date, picking up immense streaming and radio support and being dubbed by many as ‘2023’s D&B anthem’.

The duo are set to feature at this year’s MADE Festival this Saturday (29th July), joining the likes of Dimension, Hybrid Minds, Danny Byrd, S.P.Y, Charlie Tee and many more sought-after Drum & Bass talents at Birmingham’s Digbeth Triangle. Since debuting in 2014, MADE Festival has become a cultural institution in the Midlands. Initially based in inner-city Birmingham, the event has moved across several regional venues.

Featuring the usual blend of the region’s finest street food, street art displays, installations and live demonstrations, as well as world-class DJs and live acts, the 2023 festival is set to celebrate its ninth year with the biggest and most exciting production to date.

Ahead of their set at MADE Festival, Pola & Bryson are on hand to serve up a selection of their favourite D&B heaters:

Sub Focus – Alarm ft. MC ID

This tune has been making regular appearances in our sets for months now – it’s such a great tune to double drop with and sonically stands out amongst many others.

Pola & Bryson – Tell You What I Did ft. Zitah

A great one to sing along to with the crowd, it always gets everyone moving and provides plenty of ‘hands in the air’ moments.

The Prodigy – Breathe (Camo & Krooked & Mefjus Remix)

A certified weapon and anthem all rolled into one – it never fails to go off with a festival crowd no matter where in the world you might be.

Riton & Kah-Lo – Fake I.D (Pola & Bryson Remix)

Been playing this one out for a few months now and have been getting a lot of love on it – shaping up to be a bit of a percy festival dub for us.

Technimatic – Clockwise

This has always been a summer festival kind of track for us for years now. Along with a handful of other Technimatic classics, it just has that uplifting summery feel to it that we love.

Pola & Bryson & Emily Makis – Phoneline

Would be pretty weird for us to not be playing this one out every week, tbh – it’s been nuts hearing seas of people screaming the words back to us no matter where we are. Huge love to Emily for her insane performance on this one – Thanks x

Culture Shock – Deconstruct

Culture Shock has always been a firm favourite of ours, and whenever we fall in love with one of his tracks, it swiftly becomes solidified into our sets forever. The insanely euphoric 2nd drop makes it a belter to mix as well.

Sub Focus & Wilkinson – Just Hold On (Pola & Bryson VS Sub Focus & Wilkinson Remix)

As well as being impossible to miss in our playlists, what with having arguably the longest title of any track on our USBs, the euphoria you feel when you hear Vula’s gorgeous vocals makes it a no-brainer for the summer festival sets.

Following an impressive showing on Scott Diaz’s ‘Rock Like’ EP, Toronto’s Darren Marshall returns to Groovphoria Records for his solo debut with an invigorating four-tracker loaded with authentic house flavours from start to finish.

Out now and spanning four impressive tracks, his ‘Lit The Wick’ EP is a culmination of clean-cut US-style house infused with jazz, funk, disco and more.

To celebrate the release of his latest record, Darren shares a selection of some of his absolute favourite house cuts, including a few selected works from his own catalogue:

Demuir – To Be A Star (feat. Phil Weeks) (Mat Lunnen & Darren Marshall Remix)

This actually got released through a remix competition. Our remix was selected as a winner by Demuir, and he put it out on his label, Purveyor Underground. The vocal is sliced up in a different order than the original, and it contributes to the vibe of the track in a big way. The song’s really groovy and perhaps even a bit hypnotic. Mat and I were really proud of this one. The chance to release this with Demuir’s blessing was a big deal to us as well.

Jonasclean – My Dear

I really, really like Jonasclean. His music shows a tremendous amount of polish. I recently told someone, “Jonasclean’s work sounds 3D” (that’s a thing, right???) There’s always a lot of depth and dynamics; the whole frequency spectrum shines. His music is funky as hell, to boot! This track “My Dear” is all of the above and also happens to be on the uplifting side of things, so it’s guaranteed to provoke smiles on the dancefloor.

Jeff Dougler & Balu – Coming Down (Jason Hodges Remix)

It’s sort of silly to try and pick your favorite Jason Hodges song. The dude has so many that just plain crush. I’m not professing I have a favorite per-say, but this remix he did for Jeff Dougler and Balu a couple of years ago comes to mind. It’s the mood on this one that makes me mention it. It’s able to kick your front door in and tell you it’s the boss, all while still staying a bit slick and almost laid back. It’s a beast. Lights off at the warehouse kind of stuff.

Jazzmik & Darren Marshall – Mind Games

This was the first time Jazzmik, and I hooked up on a tune. We’re working with one another again because of this release. The groove of this tune gets me every time. The way the drums work with the main samples – toe tapping and head bobbing is a must. The vocal sample is pretty dope as well and almost demands your attention. I’m really happy to have this out on Montreal’s Frosted Recordings. I’m Canadian (Toronto), so keeping this one close to home was awesome.

Demuir – Lemme Hear It

I have too many Demuir favorites, to be fair. I’ll go back a few years on this pick and choose ‘Lemme Hear It”. I have told Demuir how ridiculous this tune is on more than one occasion. It really has everything. A cracking snare that swings super hard. A thick, driving and textured bassline. A slick and interesting vocal and groove for days! I love the mix of the song too. Something about where that lead snare sits in the mix makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck! It’s crazy!

Lex Luca – Favorite Game (DJ Sneak, Tripmastaz present Rare Two Inc. Remix)

Chunky bassline, subtle but impactful drums, and amazing samples. Around halfway through the track, it breaks down and resets the mood. That disco sample fades in, and when the kick drops back in, and the bassline is completely different than it was previous to the break, the vibe dial turns up to 11. ‘The Feels’ are easily provoked as this happens.

James Juke & Darren Marshall – Crazy House

My favorite song off of a 3 track EP we put out earlier this year on Jack City Records. Each track on this release came together a bit differently. On Crazy House, James painted out the vibe by way of some really amazing sampling. He laid out the blueprint of the track very well. I then tied it together with the drum programming and by playing around with the arrangement. It’s a vibey tune and once again has a certain syncopation that makes me want to sway with it.

Barney Osborn – Broken Keys

Broken Keys, So Barny Osborn, So good. This song lights on fire once that main key hook drops and starts looping. It’s a burner yet a feel-good tune at the same time. Barney’s drum work is great, too, and his tracks bump in such a way you can go: “Oh, this is Barney!” This was a big tune last year, and I’m sure it will stand the test of time.

Bug Jazz – Steve Robinson

Now I’ve really loved this track since day 1. But that love leveled up one night as I happened to stumble on the sample source Steve used for Bug Jazz. Once I understood what he did to rework that sample and create the tremendous vibe of this song, my admiration for the track doubled. I really like Steve’s work overall, and you can tell he works hard at his craft. I’ve mentioned to him that I’d love to work on something with him in the future. Hopefully, we will get the chance!

MD X-Spress – God Made Me Phunky

Ending on a classic! While I’ll date myself here, I’ll admit that I easily remember when this came out as clear as day. I remember hearing this drop for the first time, and it blew my mind. It was for all of the obvious reasons. That key loop, the bassline, Mike Dunn’s signature vocals. Just buckets and buckets of swag and groove. This song is timeless and still kills if unleashed at the right time.

Darren Marshall’s ‘Lit The Wick’ EP is out now on Groovphoria Records. You can grab your copy HERE.

Newly-launched underground imprint Curated. recently welcomed its second release with Denver-based Ross Kiser at the wheel for ‘Under The Light’.

Boasting an impressive label catalogue between Denver’s Ross Kiser and UNCANNY label boss Juliche Hernandez, including Bondage Music, MicroHertz and many others, ‘Under The Light’ continues an impressive introduction to the label, filled with rich analogue sounds and deepened grooves throughout.

To celebrate the release of his latest record, Colorado native Ross Kiser joins us at Data Transmission with a selection of some of his most-loved underground cuts:

Kevin Yost – What Is Cool? (feat. Howard Burns)

A super jazzy cut that hits those nostalgia notes for me every time. Kevin is a mastermind with instrumentation and I love this tune! Especially when those horns hit half way through.

Guti & Dubshape – Every Cow Has A Bird

Ooof. Timeless groover that hits those jazzy yet tribal and groovy housey notes for me. Solid example of a tune that I never get sick of. One of my favorite Guti tunes and definitely one of my favorite releases on CR.

Matt Tolfrey (feat. Marshall Jefferson) – The Truth

One of my favorite tunes and biggest inspirations from when I was just starting to really develop my sound and get into production. Unreal vocal, amazing chord sweeps and the groove of a lifetime.

Benno Blome – Abotha (Mihai Popoviciu Remix)

One of my favorite remixes and productions from Mr. Mihai Popoviciu – this tune not only grooves, but the unreal working of all of the stabs creates a call and response that is magical. Super inspirational tune for. Still play this out in my sets often!

Ross Kiser – Because Of You

The first record I released on vinyl and the first tune I made during quarantine. Holds a special place in my heart. Also super proud of how all of the sounds work together to create a timeless groove. This is an emotional one for me.

Ross Kiser – Under The Light

Title track from my latest featured EP on Curated. The sweeping chord riser set the tone for the whole creative process on this one. It just clicked. Wrote this record in about 3 or 4 hours from start to finish – Sometimes when the ideas just flow quickly it can be some of your best work and I feel that way about this track.

ANOTR, Toman – Time

Ah I freakin love this tune. Incredible bassline accompanied by a jackin’ groove and all of the jazz elements that I love so much. One of my favorite records I have in my bag. Perfect to jam to in the living room or for a packed dancefloor. The maestros delivered hard on this record. Great mix of both of their styles too. Serious collab right here.

2Vilas – Verve

Love the dubbed out sounds on this cut. Great vocal sample accompanied by a money groove and those dub tech chords that get me everytime. Have played this in many sets and I don’t plan on stopping. This really scratches my itch for that dubby grooving sound.

Chris Stussy – Speak

To this day, one of my favorite Chris Stussy cuts. This was released as a vinyl only PIV release and I was honored to snag a copy. Simple and groovy, yet elegant. Beautiful chord work on top of that soulful spoken word vocal. Ace track all around (The whole release is stellar and Djebali’s remix is also a jam).

Ross Kiser – Big Things

One of my favorite tunes from the past year. This one is off my latest EP on Bondage Music. This record really stands out to me in terms of my personal production journey. More elements than I usually add, yet to me, they all seem to work nicely in harmony to create a journey of a tune. Spent hours on sound design for this one and am super proud of the final product. I am a sucker for dub chords and spoken word vocals and this one hits that note for me. Hope you like it 🙂

Ross Kiser’s ‘Under The Light’ EP (incl. Juliche Hernandez Remix) is out now on Curated. You can grab your copy here.

Malux is the Drum & Bass moniker of respected bass music pioneer SKOPE, with years of production experience behind him and a rich imagination, rendering him capable of exquisite audio manipulation and diverse funk aesthetics. With an impressive catalogue of spirited offerings on RAM Records, War On Silence, Vision Recordings and several others, Malux is back on the increasingly popular artist-led collective Evolution Chamber with the perfect follow-up to his Ghost Train feat. Hijak MC.

Gliding through the depths of an eerily urgent cinematic intro, Jerichoswiftly punches into a tirade of roaring harmonic frequencies alongside the gripping harshness of breakneck drums and spine-bending jungle-laced fills.

To celebrate his latest release, Malux shares an eclectic selection of some of his favourite cuts below:

Dirty Art Club – Hemlock

One of the best producer names and best chillout/beats producers. I listen to a lot of these guys when I’m not listening to heavy stuff.

Black Barrel – Turn Up

Love black barrels sound, great rollers with a tech vibe.

Sam Binga & Redders – Natural Mission – (Bakey Remix)

Garage is coming back! Always a favourite of mine and I’ve been loving the stuff coming on pineapple records.

Airglo – Big Bad Wolfgang

Just a really cheeky baseline! Love it.

Habstrakt & Nitepunk – Point

I’ve been getting much more into bass house recently and this is great example of the kind of stuff I like.

Tsuruda – Headshot

Such a beastly bass, Tsuruda always comes with the vibes.

Stone Giants – West Coast Love Stories

What a beautiful composition from one of Amon Tobin side projects, I love the vocal sound and the atmosphere.

Maysev – Aversion

This guy is a strong new talent I discovered recently through dividid and this is the track I’ve been playing the most from the release.

X&G – HITIT

Possibly my favourite producers at the moment and this is another example of why.

Malux – Jericho

My new single on Evolution Chamber, Enjoy!

Ocha Records underlines its credentials as a home for quality underground house music as long-time friend, Martin Iveson a.k.a. Atjazz, lands on the label with a remix of Coflo & Lady C’s 2019 vocal-led cut, ‘Easy. The revered UK DJ, producer and label owner, skilfully twists the uplifting afro house vibe of the original into a stylish deep house groove. Released globally on December 2nd, Atjazz brings his undeniably unique and definitive touch to an already stunning track, giving it a whole new lease of life. Lush, sweeping Rhodes and a beautiful new arrangement of Lady C’s captivating vocals take this one into unmissable new territory.

During his 20-year career Atjazz has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, including the likes of Nitin Sawhney, Bob Sinclar, Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Karizma, Osunlade and Omar. His distinctive sound and experimental approach to electronic music via his Atjazz Record Company imprint has ensured he remains in high demand around the world both as a producer and remixer, as well as a floor-filling DJ. The new release on Ocha will only add to this talented artist’s reputation.

To celebrate the release of his latest remix on the imprint, Atjazz shares an inspired selection of his favourite Ocha Records cuts:

Mzee – Mahuwelele (feat. Candy Nurse) (Mzee’s Tribal Mix)

One the best crossover deep house records in my opinion, full of what sounds like other-world sounds and is as slick as it gets.

DJ Kemit – Teller (feat. Eric Roberson) (Pablo Martinez Remix)

Again, this is a magical meld of what we used to call afro-house & soulful deep music, Amazing!

Coflo – Lux (Kaidi Tatham Remix)

Let’s talk about someone reworking Coflo before we hit his own productions, Kaidi is king and can readjust to work himself into any song, it is apparent here. I LOVE the subtlety of this.

Coflo – Spiritu (Coflo’s Extra Spiritu Mix)

Warm & Aggressive is equal measure, This particular version of Spiritu is a mainstay, not overly one style or another so can fit well into any DJ set.

Tamara Wellons – You Are (Coflo Remix)

Coflo in remix mode, straight up, for my money, Coflo’s best remix work to date, musically perfect in every way and slides effortlessly under Tamara’s original vocal.

Coflo – Easy (feat. Lady C) (Atjazz Remix)

And here we are with yours truly remixing the man himself, I personally love the work that Coflo & Lady C put in together and I’m honoured to have been asked to be a part of Coflo’s musical history with my remix of their brilliant ‘Easy’

Whoops! What have you done Ocha Records?

What they did wrong: As much as I want to… in fact, nope, can’t even finish my sentence.

The Atjazz remix of Coflo & Lady C ‘Easy’ is available to buy/stream from December 2nd here.
