Issey Cross has rightfully placed herself as one of the dance world’s most exciting new talents. The singer-songwriter has been smashing it with her effervescent falsetto set to raucous 175 bpm drum ‘n’ bass. Notably on 3 crossover UK Top 40 chart hits, including ‘I Could Get Used To This’ with Wilkinson, ‘Oh My’ with Luude and Moby, and her No.19 debut solo, ‘Bittersweet Goodbye’.

Issey’s vivacious spirit has earned her the intrigue of bass lovers and pop connoisseurs alike. 2024 was packed with live dates spanning a debut tour of New Zealand and Australia, performing in front of 15,000 partygoers at Shy FX and Wilkinson’s takeover at Drumsheds, and a main stage appearance at the mammoth MADE Festival 10th anniversary.

Issey Cross will perform at Rise Festival’s 10th anniversary

Festival season isn’t over yet for the young talent with the ever-changing hair colour. Issey Cross now prepares to head to the French Alps for Rise Festival’s 10th birthday bash where thousands of ravers are in for treat of global DJ talent – Sammy Virji, Chase & Status and Hedex to name a few – and a week of snow, music and adventure.

Ahead of the event, we caught up with Issey to ask what tracks have soundtracked her year and what would make the ultimate apres-ski playlist. Find out her choices below.

K Motionz & Songer – Beamin’

This song is so fun to listen to and just gets me hyped up to go outtttt!

KETTAMA – Pretty Green Eyes (Sunset Ibiza Mix)

This song reminds me of good times in the summer with friends hanging round the pool in Ibiza.

Fred again.. x The Japanese House x Scott Hardkiss – backseat

This makes me feel sad and happy at the same time. I love songs that give you that feeling. Also, I love The Japanese House! I remember listening to this on the way back from a show this summer and looking out the window reflecting on how much has happened this year.

BL3SS x CamrinWatsin- Kisses (feat. Bbyclose)

I find this song sooo fun to listen to and it’s so catchy! Banger.

Monrroe & Emily Makis – Never Too Old (Friction Remix)

This one really takes me away in my mind and feels so euphoric to listen to. Every time I hear it, it makes me wanna scream the words!

Nia Archives – Cards On The Table

I bloody love Nia. Such a big inspiration to me as a woman and I absolutely how artistic this song feels to me.

Sammy Virgi – If U Need It

I heard this song played everywhere this summer at festivals and it still pops off now. Love Sammy.

Joy Orbison – flight fm

Something about this song is so satisfying. I was quite late to hearing it, but I remember being on the way to a festival driving past Stonehenge and saying to the driver, turn this upppp!

Charli xcx – Sympathy is a knife

For some reason this song feels so nostalgic to me and gets me in my feels.

Issey Cross – Sleepwalking (feat. Songer)

I love this song as I wrote it about a hard time in my life so it’s one of my more emotional songs that I love performing live. It’s also been so fun performing it along with Songer this summer at festivals.

Catch Issey Cross at Rise Festival, 7-14 December at Les 2 Alpes, France. For more info, visit www.rise-festival.com

Data Transmission are entering Team DT – a whole bunch of Music folk to run the Marlow Half Marathon in November and we will be raising awareness against tinnitus for British Tinnitus Association because many of us suffer & hope to help others via an awareness campaign.

From a random chat in the pub between Junior & Grant Richards to a Data Transmission supported event where a load of DJs and music people come together to raise awareness about tinnitus and protecting your hearing, whilst tackling the Marlow Half Marathon. Many of the individuals involved HAVE tinnitus but HAVEN’T run before, so we will be sharing our stories and struggles along the way and hope you can find it in you to at least, share our project, or even better if you can find it in you to stick some of your hard earned money in to the fundraising pot.

We’ve created a TeamDT playlist provided by Junior this time and full of Garage flavours to get you exercising. If you’d like to sponsor us, you can here.

Don’t forget to follow our channel to keep updated with all our new playlists:

Malaney Blaze aka Daniel Neal is 27 years old and currently resides in Nottingham.

Coming from creative parents and being around music his whole life, he started his musical endeavours in his teens, learning the drums and joining a Ska band with school friends.

Shortly after he branched out into classic hip hop and started collecting vinyl. When he eventually got his decks he started practicing turntable-ism and quickly picked up mixing and beat matching skills. It wasn’t long before he turned his attention to electronic music, in particular, Drum & Bass.

You can always expect a bass heavy set from Malaney Blaze and he is comfortable using 4 decks to keep the crowd dancing and guessing. He is also not afraid to dabble with his other influential genres (Reggae/Breaks/Hip Hop/Garage/UKG/Dubstep), so don’t be surprised if the tempo gets changed up a few times throughout his performances.

Having played at clubs in his local area and supporting international acts such as AMC, Jubei, Congo Natty, Top Cat, SASASAS and Jayline he has had already made quite a name for himself.

We expect big things from Malaney Blaze after he Won the Nozstock Festival in association with Data Transmission 2016 DJ Competition which will take him to play at the festival this weekend (22nd-24th July), you can still grab tickets from their website > http://nozstock.com/

As 2015 prepares to breathe its last, NexGen Music Group spawns a new offshoot covering the garage, 2-step and house end of the spectrum

Joining NexGen Records (drum & bass/downtempo/alternative) and Migration Recordings (dubstep/future bass), the newly founded Affectionate Grooves imprint kicks off with two fun and funky EPs from the UK’s Kachina. Promising “music from the spiritual dimension to sharpen your senses and calm your soul,” we can’t think of a better (non-alcoholic) way to deal with the in-laws over the festive period.

Crossing the boundaries between garage, house and bass music, the Smile and Heisenberg EPs will be joined by two more 4-trackers from Kachina (titled Blind and Broken Lines) in January. Check them out ahead of time via the Affectionate Grooves SoundCloud.

In addition, NexGen have launched a brand new website and store.

DT got hooked on Luke West the minute we heard his debut EP, OOOOO (yep that’s five Os, or perhaps five gold rings if you’re feeling festive). The record offers a moody, stripped-back take on UK funky, akin to how Sully handles garage or Wen‘s approach to grime. Set to be the inaugural release on Sub Skank boss Akito‘s new Sans Absence label, the OOOO EP won’t hit the market until late January; however, since we know you guys want to stay ahead of the game, we’ve got a Spotlight Mix from Luke to whet your appetites.

Employing more boisterous tactics to his mix than his EP, Luke turns out an energetic journey through club-killing house, techno and UK funky. Running a similar vibe to the Night Slugs crew, it’s unsurprising to see the likes of L-Vis 1990, Addison Groove and Girl Unit on the tracklist; plus there’s work from Akito and London’s D Warrior – both of whom take remix duties on the OOOOO EP.

We think you’ll agree there’s no better way to get warmed up this weekend that cranking up the system and listening to Luke’s Spotlight Mix. Stream or download it below and check out the full tracklist at the bottom of the page. And to pick up a copy of the OOOOO EP, head over to the Sans Absence Bandcamp from January 22nd 2016.

Our Spotlight Mix this week comes from Urbymn, a Frenchman who’s taken up residence in London on his mission to spread the music that inspires him across the world.

“Aside from having serious difficulty connecting with the shiny world of awards, charts and promoters, I have had a boundless admiration for the path of a forgotten handful of artists,” says Urbymn. “I feel the urge to discover and share their music, and I spend all my spare time doing so. It’s the only serious passion that has moved me in the past few years. And it is very much endless, which is at the same time thrilling and daunting.”

This passion has resulted in the eclectic mix of house and garage we present to you today and with Urbymn revealing more projects are on the horizon, he’ll be one to watch in 2016.

Jack Swift is a man with his head well and truly in the game.

Not only have his skills in the booth brought Jack’s signature blend of uptempo house (with a hint of garage) to the tops clubs in country, but they’ve secured him spots at the likes of Europe’s top dance festivals, such as Hideout and Outlook.

Then there’s the all important “online presence,” which Jack has nailed too, appearing on Rinse FM, Kiss FM and treating fans with regular studio videos.

And if that wasn’t enough, Jack also happens to be one of the brains behind London club night Juxx. His parties have hosted a wealth of talent, including Celsius, Dexter Kane, Klose One, New York Transit Authority, Dale Howard, Gerd and DT favourite, Paleman.

All pretty impressive, right? Well then, we’re sure you’ll agree it’s time to put Jack’s skills to the test under the DT Spotlight. Stream or download his exclusive mix below, and keep yours eyes on Jack, as with a packed schedule of upcoming shows and news that he’s been busy in the studio too, he’ll be making rather a lot of noise very soon.

pvc

There’s no easy way to announce this so we’re just going to come out and say it, we love PVC here at Data Transmission. No, not that kind of PVC – so you can stop sniggering at the back, although we’ll admit our Editor’s other half does look rather fetching in a catsuit – we’re talking, of course, about the fast rising London raised, Brighton based DJ and producer of the same name.

Touching on everything from grime and hip hop to house and R&B jams, PVC or Purple Velvet Curtains as he’s also known, covers a vast amount of sonic terrain and ties it all up neatly with an eclectic, future garage bow. Slickly driven production is the name of the game on his latest EP for Four40 Records with his three track effort, You Heavy, in our heads and on our playlists since it arrived last month.

Clearly destined for big things, we thought it was about time we caught up with the young man from Croydon and had him strut his stuff for us here at DT. You’ll be pleased to know he hasn’t disappointed, serving up an 45 minute long set of selections guaranteed to get you thawing out those boogying muscles.

What are you doing at the moment?

Easy guys thanks for having me. I’m currently in Croydon finishing off a couple of remixes before I head back to Brighton. I’m trying to keep myself as busy as possible at the moment!

They say the devil makes work for idle thumbs… Tell us a bit about this mix you’ve sorted for us…

It’s essentially a mix of a bunch of tunes I’m feeling at the moment and play out regularly, mainly consisting of my own and a few new bits, but just a bit of a mash up of the bass house scene and tunes I’ve been supporting quite a lot over the last few months, there’s a couple favourites from a while back as well that always end up getting played out.

Your music covers the spectrum of house and garage music, what influences you?

Almost everything and anything to be honest, I listen to a lot of different music on a daily basis be it at work or at home there’s always a radio on somewhere so I like to draw a lot of elements from different styles of music into my brand of bass fuelled house. I grew up on a lot of soulful house and garage, then I went out to a lot of drum and bass raves in my teens so I’d like to think I’ve included elements from that into my output too.

Didn’t we all… What does house and club music mean to you?

Well I started producing when I was around 14. I started making garage and house before experimenting with different sounds and genres until I came to the conclusion that producing house and garage was what I wanted to do. It was then that I began taking things seriously and started working as PVC. In regards to club music there’s just a different vibe and energy that it carries and with it being so diverse in sound you can do so much with a 130-140 BPM beat that it makes it continually fresh and interesting. There’s so much excitement surrounding the bass house scene at the moment that I just hope we can maintain the momentum. I don’t see it slowing down any time soon.

pvca

You seamlessly incorporate sampling culture into your tunes, epitomised by Brown Sugar, what draws you to those kind of sounds?

From listening to a lot of different music, I always hear things from tracks I think would really fit well in a bass house track and love trying to include elements and sounds that might seem a bit weird at first and try to make them work. As well as making many sample packs myself, I take things from old movies, 60s Swing and 70s Jazz as well as a lot of hip-hop just because I think a way of keeping a genre fresh is producing out of the norm and finding something to use that might not necessarily be considered appropriate by most.

Obviously you are not afraid of big basslines either, I find the juxtaposition of more laid back elements with low end pressure and gunfinger motifs like on ‘I Need You’ and ‘You Heavy’ a nice change of pace… why does this coupling of light and dark elements appeal to you?

To be honest I have always tried to keep my productions quite melodic and pretty layered, whatever I’m making, but I really like a euphoric build with a drop that hits an audience unexpectedly. I think this works really well within the genre and gives you space to make something outrageous.

Tell us about the making of ‘You Heavy’) – its playful like bassline of the past, but deep enough to fit in with the stuff being played in the house clubs at the moment – how did you go about crafting it?

I really enjoyed producing ‘You Heavy’ and it was really fun to work on. When I started it, I didn’t really have an overall feel of what the finished track would sound like but I kind of flowed into it as it progressed. I remember playing around on some keys, which makes up the melody at the intro and bridge, thinking I wasn’t getting anywhere until I messed about with a couple basses and thought they’d fit real good together. I really like when you make something that works unintentionally because it gives it that sort of spontaneous element to the track. So I used that big bass with the soft keys and synths to make something I feel would work well in any sort of set.

pvcb

Do you have a personal philosophy regarding music production?

Normally what I produce depends on the kind of mood I’m in, I make a lot of tracks that I don’t share because I don’t think it would fit the PVC sort of vibe. But with regards to PVC tracks, I’m pretty open to different vibes but try to make something I feel would fit into a wide variety of DJs sets, because I like to go out and rave when I’m not playing out and I want to make something that I would like to hear in the clubs and events I attend.

Who in your opinion is making waves at the moment? What kind of stuff are you digging?

Ahh the list is mad, there’s so much talent in this scene and that’s what makes it so special. People like Tuff culture, Moony, Skeleta, Pavv and Holy Goof are always in my sets but there’s too many to name, then, of course, you got some of the dons who have been killing it for a while.

How do you think the house and bassline scenes are doing at the moment?

I think it’s in a really good place right now, producers such as Hybrid Theory, Champion, Flava D and Q are doing such good things for the scene at the moment by bringing up and supporting people such as myself and giving them a strong platform to be heard. DJs like Marcus Nasty and Cartier are really supportive, I can only imagine the scene getting bigger and taking off completely.

Marcus Nasty? There’s a blast from the past. Are you feeling grime then? Do you feel its resurgence is good for the scene overall?

Yea I do play a lot of grime and produce a few bits for other artists, have been on it for a while but not publicly there’s a lot of MCs in Brighton and the towns real big on UK hip hop but coming from Croydon it’s a movement that’s been hard not to be a part of and I’m rating it fully.

What has been your favourite release on Four40 Records and why?

There’s been a couple for me, got to big up notion on the latest release because it’s absolute fire. Billy Kenny’s ‘Call You Back’ EP was big but Hybrid Theory with Lady Leshurr and Trilla still gets rinsed.

Whats next for you?

I’m doing a lot of shows over the next couple months up and down the country so check my Facebook page for them. I’m also currently in the process of finishing my next EP and a few remixes for some labels here in the UK and abroad. I’ve also got a track featured on the new Ministry of Sound album out now so a exciting times lay ahead!
