SoundCloud Pen Deal With Sony

Finally. Sony and SoundCloud have reached an agreement.

The deal is set to create a host of new creative, commercial and promotional opportunities for Sony’s artists and songwriters with SoundCloud having 175 million monthly listeners with the settlement allow Sony’s labels to gain access to SoundCloud’s promotional tools, analysis and data.

“This agreement creates a business framework for the use of Sony Music songs on the SoundCloud platform that meets the needs of our artists and labels and supports the growth of SoundCloud through its new premium on-demand music tier,” Dennis Kooker, Sony’s president of global digital business and United States sales, said in a statement.

The deal will cover the licensing of Sony’s music around the world. It could mean that a free version of SoundCloud would have just a sampling of Sony’s music, while a majority of its music would be available on a paid version of the service.  It is also mentions that Sony will now own a percentage of Soundcloud and help them in their next round of funding, thus increasing the platforms presence.

It’s no secret that we’re big fans and users of Soundcloud at Data Transmission, using the platform to host all of our podcasts, premieres, free downloads and remix competitions as we seek to showcase freshest music known to man (or woman).
