DT714 – Wongo

Share

Producer, DJ, label head, radio show host, former international breakdancer, full-time funnyman… Gold Coast-bred party-starter Wongo is no one-trick pony.

With a big few years under his belt, by now you’ve probably already cut shapes to Wongo tunes. His production CV includes originals like ‘Mars’, ’Tic Toc’, ‘Caught Up’ as well as his hit parody record ‘Im The DJ’ which featured star DJ Dr. Fresch in the Hollywood Hills music video. As well as multiple mixes on Triple J, Wongo also hosts his own radio show on Insomniac Radio in the USA every month. 2019 found Wongo officially remixing Confidence Man, Client Liaison, The Knocks and Dom Dolla as he keeps a stronghold on being the ‘Go-To’ guy for remixing.

What really drives everything Wongo though is his love for music and the community around him. Case in point is his fast-rising label Box of Cats, which he uses to support and shine a light on the producers he sees doing good things. Big tunes, big sets and big love – it’s all in a day’s work for dance music’s biggest multitasker.

In 2016, over a warm glass of milk and a bowl of dry biscuits, a collection of warped individuals put their heads together to create an outlet for the house music they so admired. Not just any old house music though, oh no… The idea was to create a magical record label that would serve as a home for the weirder offshoots of traditional house music – the cheeky, bass-heavy, rolling, glitchy, buzzy and wacky house music. And just like that, after at least 7 minutes of intense deliberation, Box of Cats was born.

You can grab the 100th release on Box of Cats : Pavement Special – Gotta Get Away HERE. Today, Wongo joins on the podcast for the first time. Listen to it below, on Mixcloud or iTunes here.

Sum up this podcast in 10 words…
Just a sick bunch of tracks from sick producers yo!

What’s your personal favourite track on it?
Its a bit bias but its gotta be Pavement Special – Gotta Get Away 😉

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?
Fun!

Tell us about your next EP?
I have been working away for over a year on a cross over EP into the dance-pop world. It’s been a hard slog trying to break down creative barriers I have been confined to for so long but we got there. We put out our first single from the EP, Danger Zone in November!

What have you got coming up?
Most exciting is my next release with my label buddies Kyle Watson & Jeff Doubleu. We have a new boy band group ‘Pavement Special’ to celebrate our 100th release with the label!

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?
Seeing as though we have all been given a large pay cut and its an even playing field for creativity. Try branch out and have fun with some music. Maybe you can do some shit you didn’t have time to do before 😉

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
