BC#9, also known as Jason Bakes, is a DJ and producer from Denver, Colorado, USA. A touring musician since 1986, he has built a reputation for blending organic and digital elements to create fresh, innovative sounds. He’s also the founder and host of ‘The United State of Drum+Bass’ podcast.

His debut Drum & Bass album, ‘Aquasonica’, featured standout tracks like ‘Going On’ and ‘Liquid Blue’, earning both critical and commercial success. He followed up with releases like ‘Jungle Mind,’ ‘Massive,’ and ‘Sound Boy Killa,’ solidifying his place in the jungle scene. Most recently, BC#9 collaborated with Bristol-based outfit Paper Dragon on ‘Unity Gain’. Remixes of the track by Dope Ammo and Kravitz, and a version featuring Jasmine Knight’s vocals are set to drop soon.

Having spent time in the UK during the ’90s, BC#9 witnessed the rise of Jungle, Drum & Bass and Hardcore firsthand, falling in love with the sound and culture. This deep connection led him to establish DnB United Records, a platform dedicated to celebrating the art, culture, and evolution of Drum & Bass and Jungle worldwide.

Founded in 2013 as a hub for artist interviews, album reviews, and guest mixes, DnB United Records has grown into a team of industry professionals supporting releases across the scene. Pulsating basslines and uplifting vocals—Paper Dragon and Chez are back with ‘Winds Of Change’, another top-tier track that hits the mark. After smashing it with ‘The Temple’, the duo are stepping things up with this fresh release. With more studio sessions in the pipeline and a live show on the horizon, 2025 is already looking like a big year for both acts.

Paper Dragon has officially brought Chez, a rising DJ and songwriter from Gloucester, into the fold. Chez has been making waves in the scene, teaming up with Dazee, Euphonique, and the Ruffneck Ting Crew, with releases on Gorilla Warfare (with Kravitz) and DeVice (with Virtue). She’s graced festivals like Nozstock, Volksfest, Lakefest, The Bog 360 XL, and Run All Day, and she’s been heard on SWU and Kool FM. Now fronting Paper Dragon, Chez is adding her spark to their new live show, which showcases the collective’s genre-blurring back catalogue. They’ve been fine-tuning it at the Paper Dragon Presents nights in Bristol, where live electronic music takes centre stage.

Paper Dragon is making a name for themselves by delivering bold, forward-thinking dance music. The Bristol-based crew blends old-school jungle vibes with cutting-edge breaks, bringing something fresh to the Drum & Bass scene.

With Bruce Turner, Kris Burton, and Jonathan Savage at its core, the group has an impressive production pedigree, working with icons like U2, Kate Bush, Massive Attack, Rick Rubin, Brian Eno, Underworld, KOAN Sound, TC, Distorted Minds, Mura Masa, NAO, Mount Kimbie, and Fred V & Grafix.

Their track record speaks for itself—’Reach’ was named BBC Radio 1’s Coldest Record by Jeremiah Asiamah and Hottest Record by Clara Amfo, while ‘Holding On’ got a major shoutout from My Nu Leng at Love Saves the Day. Their collab with Grafix, ‘Forget the Rain’, has racked up over 1.7 million Spotify streams, and ‘Be Free’ is sitting at nearly 2.1 million streams.

With their distinctive blend of jungle, breaks, and heartfelt melodies, Paper Dragon is shaking up the bass music world in the best way possible.

Paper Dragon and Jasmine Knight just teamed up with Kravitz to drop a sick jungle-infused remix of the banger ‘Lost in a Moment.’ Picture soulful vocals soaring over a tight beat with some deep bass vibes. This one’s for all you sound system heads out there!

After their killer success with the ‘Strawberries’ Kravitz Remix, which got mad love across the scene, with even Harriet Jaxxon spinning it on BBC Radio 1 and Kool FM, plus getting lit up by AMA, MNL, and Charlie Tee. Oh, and it hit number 6 in the Closing Essentials 2023 Beatport Chart! UKF also gave it a shoutout, racking up 30K views on their upload.

Kravitz really went old school jungle with this remix, tapping into that vibe hardcore. With his past releases on Jungle Cakes, Gorilla Warfare, 1 More Thing, and more, and getting support from legends like Danny Byrd, Dr. Meaker, and AMA, dude’s definitely one to keep an eye on.

Paper Dragon actually first got wise to Jasmine through her amazing work with Dope Ammo. They just knew her sound would vibe perfectly with their old-school feel, and this remix just cranks it up a notch.

Now, let’s talk about Paper Dragon, these Bristol-based legends. They’re all about blending that classic jungle flavour with a modern twist, and they do it flawlessly. You’ve got Bruce Turner, Kris Burton, and Jonathan Savage holding it down, with Torsten Jensen on the keys. These guys have some serious creds, having collabed with big names like U2, Kate Bush, and Massive Attack, just to name-drop a few.

They had some serious success with EPs like ‘Birds of Paradise’ and ‘Circuits’ back when Ruth Royall was fronting the crew. But now, they’re back at it with a fresh angle and a whole arsenal of jungle and breaks-inspired beats.

These guys are straight-up killing it in the bass scene, with big-ups from BBC Radio 1, including being called the Coldest Record by Jeremiah Asiamah and snagging Hottest Record from Clara Amfo. And let’s not forget about their track ‘Holding On’ tearing up Love Saves The Day! Plus, their collab with Grafix, ‘Forget the Rain,’ has over 1.7M Spotify streams, and ‘Be Free’ ain’t far behind with almost 2.1M streams. Talk about climbing the ranks in the electronic game!

Check out our premiere of ‘Lost In A Moment’ below. The release drops this Friday 15th March, you can get your hands on a copy here!

After a short break from releasing Paper Dragon are ready to take it back to the old school with a collection of jungle and breaks-inspired music. During 2022 Ruth Royall stepped back from the collective to explode into the bass sphere. This has made space for a new approach, new collaborators, and new music that will get those woofers and tweeters of your 90s Jamo speakers pumping.

Following on from the previously well-received EP’s ‘Birds of Paradise’ and ‘Circuits’, the next collection of music due in 2023 ‘Amplified Nostalgia’ is darker and deeper. It is an immersive journey pushed forward by raw breakbeats and shockingly powerful basslines.

The collective is made up of core member Bruce Turner, Kris Burton and Jonathan Savage they maintain their high-end production ethic and along with keys player Torsten Jensen between them they have worked with the likes of U2, Kate Bush, Massive Attack, Rick Rubin, Brian Eno, Underworld, KOAN Sound, TC, Distorted Minds, Mura Massa, NAO, Mount Kimbie and Fred V & Grafix.

Paper Dragon have created a solid foundation in the dance music scene and are ready to move into this new phase. Their tracks have been regulars on Spotify editorial playlists they have has spanned the temperatures on BBC Radio 1, with their single ‘Reach’ going from ‘The Coldest Record’ on the Sound System with Jeremiah Asiamah to one of the ‘Hottest Records of the Week’ with Clara Amfo.

Earlier today, we premiered their new track ‘Strawberries’ which is set to mash up dancefloors across the music scene. ‘Strawberries’ features nostalgic sample vocals and euphoric piano licks, reminiscent of an era transitioning from house to breaks and hardcore. At a brisk 160 BPM, Paper Dragon’s latest single strikes a perfect balance between old-school bliss and the impeccable production skills of three artists at the pinnacle of their game!

Now the collective joins our Renegade Riddims series with a banging fresh and exclusive mix curated especially for you (and me!). The mix features music from artists such as Riya & Collette Warren, Ray Keith, DJ Marky, Kleu, Aphrodite, Watch The Ride and themselves amongst others.

Q&A:

Sum up this mix in 10 words…

Bangers + Bangers + dubs = Double Banging MIX

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

One of the dubs is Kravitz remix of our next single Strawberries, this is probs our fav track at the moment, we can’t wait to get this out there hopefully in September, but keep an eye out for it a few big DJs have a copy of it already!

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

We have used Serato for this mix, Kris is the best DJ out of us all and it has allowed him to flex some skills adding some extra specials flare to the mix, that along with jazzy soulful, jungly vibe combined with some harder edged old school and new school flavours it has little something for everyone. It also has my new favourite double drop Couple Guinness and Gin and Juice Refix by DR Meaker that on slaps hard!!

Tell us about your next EP?

We are about to drop Amplified Nostalgia on 18th Aug, the last single Strawberries is out 4th Aug and on the EP there is bonus track that is bit different from the rest it is homage to electro and has Lottie Jones on the vocals, the EP also contains remixes from Lateral and two emerging producers RETINAZ and Maxumuss who we found at dbs music in Bristol, we all do some teaching there and it great place to find amazing talent. We were really pleased to be able to give them a little opportunity and share their tunes. The EP has been voyage into creating an old school sound with new school production, with each track representing one of steps in genre from rave to breakbeat to jungle and hardcore.

What have you got coming up?

So we have the EP out 18th Aug! Then we have the Kravitz remix of Strawberries out in September, then we have more new music to see us through the rest of the year, we are currently working some new vocalists including Jasmine Knight, Lottie Jones and Yemi Bolatiwa and looking to focus our sound a bit more for the next set of releases. We really want to get out and DJ some more, we have been focusing on the music but it now time to get out and about so promoters please do hit us up!!

When was the last time you actually raved?

So between us we get out and about quite a bit, Kris is regularly DJing at The Shakespeare in Totterdown Bristol, that is more of mixed genre party not so much of the DnB vibe, but still fulfils the raving quota! Bruce was last out at Glastonbury and Jon works in Tour Management and show production, so is fortunate to be at raves and events most weekends. He runs the Glade Dome at Glastonbury, where he did enough raving for the year! This year they had DnB heavy line up on the Thursday, he hosted the likes of Charlie Tee, Randall, Bou and Axel Boy! He also went on a little jolly to Secret Garden Party a few weeks ago where his highlights were raving to Fabio and Grooverider and the Outlook Orchestra, Leftfield and Underworld

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?

Yes!! Thank you for the support, we get so much nice feedback on the music, we like to produce a bit of an eclectic mixture of styles, I think it comes from the years of different influences, that does mean we don’t always fit in the box, but we are happy to be a bit different and people always seem to appreciate the quality of the production and that pleases us, so thanks for listening and we hope you enjoy the music we have coming out soon!!

In anticipation of their upcoming EP ‘Amplified Nostalgia,’ the rising collective Paper Dragon delivers an explosion of joy with their 160PBM track ‘Strawberries’, released through Our Space.

Hailing from Bristol, Paper Dragon is a genre-bending collective that effortlessly fuses captivating old-school sounds with a keen appreciation for modern jungle and breaks. The group consists of core members Bruce Turner, Kris Burton, and Jonathan Savage, accompanied by Torsten Jensen on the keys. Together, their combined years of high-end production experience have led to collaborations with renowned artists such as U2, Kate Bush, Massive Attack, Rick Rubin, Brian Eno, Underworld, KOAN Sound, TC, Distorted Minds, Mura Masa, NAO, Mount Kimbie, and Fred V & Grafix.

Formerly fronted by Ruth Royall, nominated for ‘Best Vocalist’ at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards, Paper Dragon achieved success with EPs like ‘Birds of Paradise’ and ‘Circuits.’ After Ruth Royall pursued her solo path in the bass world, the collective took a short break from releasing new music. Now, they are back with a fresh perspective and a collection of jungle and breaks-inspired tracks that showcase their artistic prowess.

Having earned widespread recognition in the bass music scene, Paper Dragon’s single ‘Reach’ was honoured with BBC Radio 1‘s ‘Coldest Record’ title by Jeremiah Asiamah, and Clara Amfo featured it as the ‘Hottest Record.’ Furthermore, My Nu Leng supported their recent single ‘Holding On’ at Love Saves The Day earlier this year. Their collaboration with Grafix, ‘Forget The Rain,’ has amassed over 1 million Spotify streams and received extensive support from BBC Radio 1 and KISS FM. Meanwhile, their single ‘Be Free’ boasts nearly 2 million Spotify streams, marking a remarkable ascent for this talented electronic outfit.

Now, the group teases their most exhilarating EP to date, promising an immersive journey driven by raw breakbeats and remarkably powerful basslines. Drawing inspiration from the 90s anthem ‘Sweet Harmony,’ ‘Strawberries’ features nostalgic sample vocals and euphoric piano licks, reminiscent of an era transitioning from house to breaks and hardcore. At a brisk 160 BPM, Paper Dragon’s latest single strikes a perfect balance between old-school bliss and the impeccable production skills of three artists at the pinnacle of their game.

Check out our premiere of ‘Strawberries’ below. The single drops today (Friday 4th August) and is available for you to get your hands on here!

Paper Dragon have joined forces with Lateral for an electrifying Drum & Bass reinterpretation of the profound and captivating track ‘Holding On’. Formerly a duo, Lateral, now represented solely by Ben Adcock, has elevated the tempo to 174BPM, crafting a colossal beast of a track that immerses you in the dance experience from start to finish. Rising sirens intertwine with aggressive bass lines and gritty breaks, all harmonized with the soulful vocals of Ruth Royall in ‘Holding On’. The original version of the song has garnered positive feedback, receiving support from Jeremiah Asiamah on BBC R1 and recently earning recognition in the DJ set of My Nu Leng.

Lateral made their debut on YANA Music, the label established by Toronto is Broken, in 2021. Throughout the lockdown period in 2020, Ben remained glued to his PC, resulting in the release of his debut singles ‘Do It’ and ‘Take Me Away’. These were followed by the immensely popular dancefloor hit ‘Every Nite’, as well as remixes for tracks by Toronto Is Broken, including ‘Taking Over’ and the hard-hitting dancefloor sensation ‘Between Planes’, which gained significant DJ support across the continent.

Ben has collaborated with some of the most prominent vocalists in the current music scene, such as Aleya Mae on the dancefloor anthem ‘Chasing The Sun’, Emilie Rachel on ‘The Inside’ (which Mollie Collins selected as her best track of the week for her Kiss FM show), and the legendary Foreign Beggars frontman PAV4N for an energetic collaboration with MYKOOL titled ‘Fiction’,

Following the success of ‘Holding On’ and ‘Say My Name’, both supported by Jeremiah Asiamah on Radio 1 and James Threlfall on BBC Introducing, Paper Dragon presents the third single from the highly anticipated ‘Amplified Nostalgia Collection’, set to be released later this year.

Paper Dragon returns in 2023, building upon the well-received EPs ‘Birds of Paradise’ and ‘Circuits’, Their forthcoming music collection, ‘Amplified Nostalgia’, delves into darker and deeper sonic territories, providing an immersive journey propelled by raw breakbeats and astonishingly powerful basslines.

The collective’s other talented members, Bruce Turner, Kris Burton, Jonathan Savage, and keys player Torsten Jensen, uphold their commitment to top-notch production. Together, they have collaborated with esteemed artists such as U2, Kate Bush, Massive Attack, Rick Rubin, Brian Eno, Underworld, KOAN Sound, TC, Distorted Minds, Mura Masa, NAO, Mount Kimbie, and Fred V & Grafix.

Paper Dragon has established a solid presence in the dance music scene and is now poised to enter this new phase. Their tracks have become regular features on Spotify editorial playlists, and they have received airplay on BBC Radio 1, with their single ‘Reach’ going from being dubbed “The Coldest Record” on the Sound System with Jeremiah Asiamah to becoming one of Clara Amfo‘s “Hottest Records of the Week.” They have previously collaborated with artists such as Grafix, Axel Boy, CLIQUES, and more, while their live performances have led them to grace the BBC Introducing festival stage.
