During a live presentation at their Toolroom Academy Live event in London, “From Mix to Mainstage – The Blueprint for Emerging Electronic Artists”, has now released the full findings of their newly commissioned report. Produced for Toolroom Academy by Rufy Ghazi and David Boyle – head of Audience Strategies – who has previously built global analytics and data insight capabilities for major companies including the BBC and EMI Music, and has used data to help elect a prime minister and a president.

“We have sensed a frustration among our student community that despite doing the hard yards of production and contributing great music to the scene, this effort was not mirrored with opportunity in return. Our feeling was that the gap between our student’s ambitions, and the opportunities to build sustainable careers in electronic music, seemed far too wide.” – Miles Shackleton

Working closely with hundreds of students who have graduated through the various courses and mentorship schemes offered by their Academy, Toolroom has a unique insight into the perspective of talented artists struggling to carve a sustainable career for themselves in what is a multi-billion-dollar industry.

The report is a direct response to this, providing a deeper comprehension of the industry dynamics, identifying barriers emerging artists face, and offering valuable insights, directions, and a targeted approach to strategy development for emerging artists.

“The report is an important step towards fixing a key problem we have identified at Toolroom Academy. That new artists who contribute the music – the lifeblood of the scene – face considerable challenges when attempting to turn their passion into sustainable careers. The report outlines a number of strategies for success, and suggests what role the wider industry should play in supporting emerging talent.” – Miles Shackleton

From Mix to Mainstage – The Blueprint for Emerging Electronic Artists

Based on data collected from over 250 new artists, alongside 1:1 interviews with a variety of established artists, educators, and industry professionals, the report provides a clear understanding of the challenges, experiences, and strategies used by electronic music artists. Whilst the responses largely paint a picture of resilience, versatility, and the blending of passion with pragmatism, strikingly, the report found that 76% of new artists feel that their career is not financially sustainable, whilst 62% say they struggle to grow an online audience.

With 88% of the artists surveyed expressing difficulty in understanding algorithms and developing promotional strategies, the barriers emerging artists face are much broader than the ability to produce great music.

For those DJs and producers struggling with understanding the algorithm and what to post on social media take our free 30 Day Content Strategy Training here -> https://bit.ly/30DayIGContent

Issues faced range from practical concerns around networking, collaborations, and marketing/promotion, to the emotional and physical effects of burnout and the impact of rejection on mental health.

The findings are presented alongside direct strategies for growth and a call for solutions that can be adopted across areas of the industry responsible for education, mentorship, and networking. From demystifying entry points and industry roles to providing targeted educational initiatives that bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world experience, the report offers a clear pathway towards real, meaningful change that can be implemented across the music industry.

From Mix to Mainstage – The Blueprint for Emerging Electronic Artists

“Our future objective at the Toolroom Academy is to truly understand and support new electronic music artists. We aim to evolve and adapt in order to meet our students’ needs in an ever-changing industry. The report concludes with strategies to shape music education for the future; focusing on networking, brand-building, industry acumen, and resilience, alongside providing hands-on experiences and industry-relevant content. This report will provide the intellectual basis for our evolution as an educational business over the coming years.” – Miles Shackleton

The report was launched at Toolroom Academy Live – an event aimed at supporting emerging talent featuring a full day of talks, workshops, and panels from guests including Danny Howard, Defected’s Wez Saunders, and Mark Knight.

Last year, the globally acclaimed house music vocalist and chart-topping diva, Kathy Brown, received a devastating diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer, which has since metastasized to her brain. The announcement came as a profound shock to her family, friends, and fans, leading to an emergency operation. Currently undergoing a challenging regimen of radiotherapy and immunotherapy, Kathy is confronted with a formidable journey unlike any she has encountered before.

Kathy, alongside her family, now confronts the stark reality of this situation – encompassing not only the physical and medical hurdles but also a myriad of financial challenges. Much like numerous artists who have dedicated their careers to dance music, Kathy faces the harsh reality that, without the ability to perform, her income stream is severely restricted. Having poured her heart and soul onto stages and dance floors worldwide for over three decades, Kathy now reaches out for assistance.

Chanta Joyner, Kathy’s daughter, has established a GoFundMe campaign to aid the family during this extraordinarily difficult period. In support of the fundraising initiative, Toolroom has unveiled a charity single titled ‘Turn Me Deeper’, featuring Wh0, Mark Knight and James Hurr, showcasing Kathy’s iconic vocals. The single exudes joy and celebratory vibes, reflective of the essence of Kathy’s music throughout her illustrious career. Grab yourself a copy here.

To bolster the fundraising efforts, all original writers have committed their publishing earnings, and both the artists and Toolroom have pledged their royalties. This collective support aims to provide Kathy with the best possible treatment.

Originally hailing from South Carolina, Kathy Brown first gained fame as the lead singer of the chart-topping group Praxis before achieving solo success with US dance hits. In 1999, she reached #4 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart with ‘Joy’. In 2004, she was the credited lead vocalist on the British act Soul Central‘s ‘Strings Of Life (Stronger On My Own)’, a track that samples Rhythm Is Rhythm‘s 1989 House classic. Over the years, Kathy has lent her vocals to numerous house and club singles, solidifying her status as one of the most beloved voices in the house music scene.

Toolroom founder and Grammy-nominated producer Mark Knight released his highly anticipated new artist album, ‘Untold Business’, with a set of 13 beautifully crafted, positive, life-affirming songs deemed to lift everyone’s spirits.

Featuring an all-star cast, including Michael Gray, Robert Owens, Shingai (Noisettes), Gene Farris and more, ‘Untold Business’ features Mark’s recent smash with Beverley Knight and The London Community Gospel Choir, ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’, and a one of his biggest releases to date, ‘All 4 Love’, with Rene Amesz and Tasty Lopez, which became firmly lodged on BBCR1 for 6 weeks.

Known for releasing quality club records, ‘Untold Business’ sees Mark Knight go back to his roots, reprising the sounds and records that made him the DJ he is today.

Delving through his extensive collection of classic Funk, House, Soul and Disco records from the 1970s and 80s has provided the bedrock for the album which pays homage to the soulful, vocal house music that Mark first fell in love within the 90s.

With stunning results primed to stand the test of time, ‘Untold Business’ boasts some of Mark’s best work to date, a testament to his creativity and maturity as an artist, and indeed, why he is still one of the UK’s best-loved dance music producers!

Mark Knight joined me on Twitch for an album walkthrough, we played some of the tracks of the album, he spoke about the stories about the tracks and how they came about. He also gave me his 5 things producers need to know!

Following on from last year’s smash hit ‘All 4 Love’, Toolroom’s Mark Knight is back with quite possibly his biggest release yet, pulling out all the stops and promising to make 2021 his year.

A long time in the making, ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’ is a taste of the upcoming debut album ‘Untold Business’ by the world-renowned DJ and producer. The single features vocals from the incredibly talented queen of Soul, Beverley Knight and the brilliant London Community Gospel Choir, who together bring a powerful message of positivity, solidarity and hope.

Known for releasing quality club records, this release sees Mark Knight go back to his roots, reprising the sounds and records that made him the DJ he is today. Delving through his extensive collection of classic Funk, House, Soul and Disco records from the 1970’s and 80’s for inspiration, ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’ is ripe with nostalgic vibes, delivered with Mark’s own authentic take. Primarily influenced by the seminal modern-day classic’s ‘Optimistic’ and ‘The Pressure’ by The Sounds of Blackness, Mark Knight has created a timeless piece.

Mark Knight “I wanted to write a song of hope as we come out of this incredibly tough time. I feel that musicians and producers have a responsibility to provide the soundtrack to people’s lives, and with this glimmer of hope on the horizon, I wanted this song to be a moment of positivity for the future ahead. From a string section, to the 14-piece London Community Gospel Choir, to the incomparably brilliant Beverley Knight on lead vocals – I worked with some incredible musicians on this record. It was a mammoth production, but something I wanted to do that would last the test of time. ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’: The next single from my forthcoming album ‘Untold Business’ dropping this June.”

Quote from Beverley Knight: “It was wonderful to be asked to vocal this uplifting energetic and hopeful track by Mark Knight. I am by nature an optimist and I truly believe the message ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’ which made it so easy to seriously blow! It was great to be joined by the legendary London Community Gospel Choir who introduced the gospel sound to the UK 40 years ago. Pure joy!”

Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’ will be released on Beatport exclusive promo and streaming platforms on April 23rd / Full release on May 7th 2021 on Toolroom Records.

The highly respected Dutch artist releases his third artist album, a genre-hopping collection that delves into his influences and underlines his unique place in electronic music.

Iason Chronis a.k.a. Mason returns with ‘Frisky Biscuits’ his third L.P. and a rare artist album release on respected electronic music imprint, Toolroom. Mason effortlessly weaves between house, funk, disco, and the type of impossible-to-define sounds. These sounds have seen the Dutch artist consistently walk his own path in a 25-year career in electronic music. The 13-track album is littered with guest vocalists such as Jem Cooke of Camelphat ‘Breathe’ and ‘Rabbit Hole’ fame and Shingai (The Noisettes), all bringing their unique talents.

“As an artist, Mason sits in his own space – he doesn’t follow trends, and he has his own identity. When we sign talent at Toolroom, that’s exactly what we’re looking for. This album is a really creative and cohesive body of work – it’s a real listening journey, an experience.”Mark Knight Founder of Toolroom Records

Created wholly in lockdown conditions this album is an antidote to the Covid era. Realising that people needed something to smile about, Mason crafted a record that smacks of positivity and joy. This is not heads-down fuel for a dark Berlin warehouse but a soundtrack for dancing on picnic tables in the sun.

“I wanted to turn these weird times into something productive so I locked myself in studio like a true hermit. I’m hoping with this album to bring my share of warmth and positivity to this world, which I like to think we can all use these days.” Mason

In ‘Frisky Biscuits’ Mason is clearly enjoying himself as he dives into his influences and favourite sounds. The album takes a winding path through disco vibes, dips into Latin flavours and jumps in a puddle of funk while giving a wave to electronica. It slides from hip hop to bouncing, quirky house, through to overtly credible moments. However, somehow, it all pulls together with an inherent groove and sound which is uniquely Mason.

This album is undeniably a welcome addition to all music lovers collections!

Chenai is a London based vocalist, songwriter and producer. Over the last few years, she has collaborated with and written for the likes of Hurts, Tensnake and Gorgon City. She has toured relentlessly and performed at some of the world’s biggest music festival, including Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, Benicassim, V-fest, Glastonbury, Tomorrowland and Parklife.

Chenai features on Mark Knight’s forthcoming single ‘Tonight’ alongside US veteran Mr. V. This record continues Mark Knight‘s recent foray into more vocally-focussed records.

We thought we’d find out a little bit more about Chenai so read on to learn some interesting facts about her and which records have influenced her music career.

5 Facts

I studied Law and planned on being a barrister, before I realised that music was my path and quit.

I’ve got double jointed fingers, it’s so weird, I can move them like spiders legs.

At primary school I stopped doing ballet to play rugby instead. I loved it, and played centre on the school team for about a year when I was 12.

A couple of years ago, I started to design stage outfits with a friend in fashion because I couldn’t find things I actually liked, and we’re now working on a womenswear collection together.

I was on a train once and, out of the blue, Mark Ronson called my actual phone and asked if I was free to do some work with him, I said that maybe I could squeeze him in (I actually said yes, yes, yes) but he never followed up, and I never heard from him again…

5 Tracks

The Brothers Johnson – Stomp!

This song never ever fails to make me feel good and want to move. There are so many instruments, but everything is perfectly placed so it doesn’t feel busy at all. Especially love the percussion and placement of the vocals on this tune.

Tensnake – Desire

I really enjoy the simplicity in this, the build-up. It’s so satisfying when that bassline drops at 2.10. Falling in love with this track lead me to become friends and working with Tensnake.

Octave One – Black Water feat. Ann Sanderson (Full Strings Vocal Mix)

I love music that stirs an emotion and this version is absolutely beautiful, It’s one of those tunes you can just go on a journey with, and escape into. Massive Ibiza nostalgia, can’t wait to be back there.

Quentin Harris ft Margaret Grace – My Joy

The intention in the vocal and the lyrics makes this a really empowering break-up tune, nice catchy synth pluck throughout. Feels really authentic.

Nina Simone – Baltimore

One of the most important storytellers of all time. Nina was a highly skilled classical pianist, a child prodigy in the 40/50’s, but the industry didn’t want black people at the forefront of classical music, so they told her to sing instead. This song talks about difficult times in the USA and is still so relevant today.

Mark Knight Feat. Chenai and Mr. V ‘Tonight’ drops on Toolroom Records on 17th July, you can get it here

We’ve always wanted to break down the barrier between the label and our fans, and a natural extension of this in the current climate was to invite them to be part of this music video. Seeing people of all ages, across the world get involved was quite overwhelming, and it’s reminded us how music has the power to unite people and be a force for positivity.”- Mark Knight
