Stowaway Festival has unveiled the second wave of artists for its 2025 edition, set to take place from 15th to 17th August in the stunning ancient woodlands and lakes near Stowe, Buckinghamshire. Now in its fourth year, the festival continues to carve out a unique identity, blending world-class music, immersive experiences, and a deep connection to nature.

Leading the charge, globally acclaimed dance music icons Jungle will deliver a headline DJ set, bringing their signature blend of funk, soul, and electronic grooves to the Stowaway stage. Reggae legends The Wailers, known for their timeless hits and connection to Bob Marley’s legacy, will bring an authentic roots reggae experience. Another pioneer of reggae and punk, Don Letts, will be behind the decks, spinning an eclectic selection that embodies his genre-crossing legacy. Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay makes a welcome return following the duo’s unforgettable 2024 set, promising another journey through house, funk, and electronic classics.

“I had a ball playing twice at the brilliant Stowaway last summer and so happy to be invited back this year to play disco on the Listen Here stage either side of some of my favourite DJs…. see you on the dance floor!” – Tom Findlay (Groove Armada)

The second wave of artists also features jungle trailblazer DJ Storm, a key figure in the Drum & Bass scene, and NTS selector Shy One, known for her genre-fluid approach to DJing. Festival favourite Luke Una will go B2B with the ever-eclectic Prosumer, delivering a set brimming with deep cuts and dancefloor energy. They join an already stacked line-up featuring previously announced headliners Fabio & Grooverider and The Outlook Orchestra, Shy FX, Derrick Carter, Horse Meat Disco, Seun Kuti, Anna Erhard, James Alexander Bright, Cousin Kula, and Webmoms. Our very own Hobbs & Ron Mexico will also be there for their debut at Stowaway and will bring their usual energy, vibes and fun! With this stellar selection, Stowaway continues to raise the bar as one of the UK’s most exciting rising festivals, blending electronic, jazz, reggae, and leftfield sounds into an unmissable weekend.

“The Stowaway lineup is designed to offer something for every musical taste, showcasing a diverse range of sounds across the festival each night. From late-night discos to family-friendly singalongs, each day brings something new, with our stages offering fresh experiences every evening. We want to take you on a musical adventure, whether it’s exploring the woods, relaxing by the jetty, or hunting down our secret late-night ‘covers’ bar…” Festival founder Duncan Wheeler

Launched in 2022, Stowaway Festival was created as the perfect escape from modern-day distractions, offering an immersive weekend of music, nature, and connection. Set against a breathtaking backdrop, the festival brings together world-class DJs and live acts for an uplifting, genre-spanning experience. Its popularity continues to soar—this summer, attendance grew by over 20%, defying the odds in a challenging festival climate. The festival prides itself on its intimate atmosphere, where like-minded music lovers can dance beneath the stars, explore hidden woodland stages, and discover new sounds in a truly unique setting.

Beyond the music, Stowaway offers a thoughtfully curated selection of artisan food and drink, with everything from locally sourced street food to craft cocktails and independent breweries. Adventurous festival-goers can take part in wild swimming, canoeing, and paddleboarding, while those looking to unwind can experience wellness sessions, yoga, and the lakeside woodland spa. Families are well catered for too, with a full programme of kid’s activities, all included in the ticket price.

A staple favourite in the ‘boutique festival’ category, organisers at this years Farr Festival had yet again delivered an eclectic line up of some of the world’s leading Disc Jockey’s and musicians in electronic music, to the humble settings of Bygrave woods.

Right off the batt, a stand out set came on Thursday’s opening evening, with DJ Stingray’s slot at the Factory stage (must have been sweating under that balaclava mate). He masterfully controlled the mood, empowering the feet stomping crowds, as he dispatched a superb set of Acid house thumpers. It was also great to see the likes of DJ Seinfeld stood on the sidelines, with frequent nods of approval, as he overlooked the buzzing atmosphere that was displayed before him.

The Factory stage was a new addition to the festival last year. This year, however, organisers had introduced an extra day of music on the Sunday. The almighty stage, constructed by huge enclosing shipping containers, could accommodate a large number of people, which recycled a constant buzz between the walls. Chilean born and Bristol-based DJ Shanti Celeste closed the stage on Thursday night as she served up classic house anthems (tracks such as “Move your Body” by Expansions really brought out everyone’s most extravagant dance moves) allowing the audience to dance in harmony, as the night was brought to an end.

Over at the ‘Adventures in Success’ stage, nestled deep within the woods,Tamo Sumo (Panorama Bar resident) delivered an inducingly hypnotic set, perfectly warming up the crowds and setting the stage for the following two hours of Prosumer, who closed the nights antics with a spout of house, before diving into some gritty techno. Now that the main stages had shut up shop for the night, crowds had dissolved and reemerged at the Campfire Headphone stage where London based DJ Antepop produced an extensive set that carried through to the early hours of the morning. The intimate and dimly lit settings created a spacey atmosphere, perfect to shake off your remaining energy in a lackluster ‘2-step’ before it was time to hit the sack and recharge for the next day.

With the weather maintaining a scorching 29 to 30 degrees over the following days, the festival glistened within its picturesque settings. Throughout the day, punters could escape the heat, and explore various areas and activities in the arena, such as the House of Dinosaur tent, where daily activities such as Hip Hop yoga were held. There was also a great selection of boutique stalls and shops to rummage around at (a great selection of vintage pieces at the Simply Vintage stall) as well as food eateries to cure any hangover from the previous day.

Friday’s highlights included a more downtempo vibe within the early evening, with Tom Misch flawlessly performing his new album “Geography” followed by a live performance by Mount Kimbie. Other highlights included the likes of MR. G who effortlessly produced an outstanding set on his own curated stage Ma-Dahu and Call Super who’s set defined the evening as he distinctively carried the crowd through a mix of tidy but exuberant tracks. Likewise, headliners  Optimo b2b Young Marco similarly enthralled a four-hour set journeying through a range of classics and surprising the crowd. Young Marco spun a few Michael Jackson remix’s and then dropped some dub tracks, while the Scottish duo Optimo were spinning Jungle to Techno straight into the early hours.

Saturday’s spirits were heightened with the fact that England was playing in the quarter finals, setting the day up for intensified energy and excitement. Unfortunately there were limited tickets to watch the match at The Factory as it was on a first come first served basis and this left a sour taste in a few people’s mouths. However, due to England’s success, it was soon forgotten with an exceptional live performance from George Fitzgerald, who blissfully engaged the crowd with his new EP “All That Must Be”. Over at ‘The Shack’, the well positioned stage with its natural amphitheatre –  Dixon played one of the best sets for me. He listened to the atmosphere of the crowd and produced a high tempo electrifying set that amplified his eclectic music knowledge that brought grand emotions to the dancefloor. Hard to follow on from Dixon, resident De School DJ Job Jobse brought a more relaxed atmosphere to the dancefloor – journeying through a mix of funky disco edits through to high-tempo techno. By 2am on Saturday night the crowds are in full swing as they take full advantage of the carefully crafted line-up – with many burrowing deep within the magical woodland exploring Farr’s innovative instalments such as the hammocks and illuminating lights.

Revellers were treated to a further day of music on the Sunday, with a line-up of DJ’s that knew just how to bring the party to a close. The likes of Hunee, known for his eclectic choices and often up-tempo ‘good times’ disco set’s (as well as his bouncy energy behind the decks) were a great choice to bring the euphoric weekend to a close. Joined by the likes of Antal and Interstellar Funk, Farr fest organiser’s had yet again closed the book on another memorable weekend in the Hertfordshire countryside.

The post Reviewed: Virgo Festival appeared first on Data Transmission.

Virgo is the celebration of a huge network of friends, artists, musicians and good music in the rolling hills of Devon. The festival is curated by a small but mighty crew and is a testament to their ability to get the right people together and get a party started. At all times you are quite literally a handshake away from everyone – as a few hours on site quickly reveals that not only do the DJs know each other but punters, artists, stage managers and even the build crew all seem to be friends. This connectivity shines through the event from every level and has made it really stand out as something quite different from other boutique festivals on the scene. The result of all this is an event that feels like a reunion party full of some of the best selectors, dancers and all-round party people anyone could ask for, and apparently, we’re all welcome to join…

A perfect blend of regal yet familiar, the Fulford Estate is the sort of space that is endlessly refreshing to explore, but small enough to find your mates without a half marathon. After testing the waters with the main stage last year, Virgo now installs 4 point sound from Funktion One in all it’s musical spaces and the 360-degree coverage gets a resounding yes from me. Now 4 years in, Virgo stands stronger than ever and laid out a feast of delights.

The Jam remains at the centre of the experience – a beautiful walled garden that holds much of the crowd in its flowery embrace. A Love From Outer Space (Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston) were the big name draw of the weekend and showed the Jam what they are made of on Friday night. The 80’s space mission sounds were undeniably appropriate and launched Virgo in style. The avoidance of big cheap thrills drops and the unabated commitment to slow sounds were clearly approved by the rammed dance floor. A Love From Outer Space may have started as a b2b act and event project, but it has grown into a clinical and intriguing act that has an unspoken synergy between the two at the heart of it. This was strictly head in the game business and I liked it. Solid booking.

Dan Shake has now become synonymous with the festival as a flagship headliner and for good reason. Mahogani Music has taken Dan to new heights, but his beginnings lie in Leeds alongside many of the organisers and collaborators. Pure dance floor fever erupts every time the main man steps into the Jam, and this year saw more grins and shapes than you knew what to do with.

The Jam continued to pump out nothing but good vibes and intrigue all weekend and saw Prosumer, Tristan Da Cunha and Evan Baggs each give a masterclass of their own tastes and desires.

The Saratoga Stage became the hub for all things funky as a new glitzed out geo dome replaced the low-slung chill space of previous years. The dome stepped up to the task with YoungOnes residents Hoochy and Clive setting the tone on Saturday afternoon with hard, no frills thumping disco. Velv.93 took to the decks with chuggy techno that caught attention and got the people dancing until the early hours. Penya played a really interesting selection of world and dub sounds with 2 beautiful vocalists. One of the singers interchanged her vocals with trombone throughout – an instrument you don’t often see donned over these genres.

© Photography by Jake Davis (fb.com/hungryvisuals)

Judging from the vibes, however, it was Leah Floyeurs closing set in the Saratoga that stole hearts. Two hours of clinical, punchy, strictly vinyl techno selections were the talk of the town and were a nice pat on the back for the Virgo team to keep entrusting primetime slots to the underground.

If the Jam and Saratoga were the staple diet of the festival then it was the Rainbow Shroom that provided a little pudding. With the DJ inside the distorted wooden mushroom, a stack of hay bails to dance or chill on and beautiful giant unicorn tail LED lighting throughout the over looming tree, the shroom eventually lured you one way or another.

Pablo V & Hecha were probably the happiest DJs I saw there all weekend. These guys had seriously good taste in all things funky and took us through an afternoon of pumping saxophone jazz house and glitchy numbers. The boys from Mavrik have been making movements in London town with their disco and funk but decided to pull out a serious party set with garage and hip hop undertones. Having seen them before I was surprised to see that they had this secret heavy side to their sound but it was really well received and effortlessly mixed. As the weekend moved on the Shroom grew heavier and heavier and drum and bass began to make an appearance. MPH of Audiofarm played a tasty rolling set and dropped ‘Virgo’ by Marcus Intalex – a nod to the Manchester hero on the anniversary of his untimely death.

© Photography by Jake Davis (fb.com/hungryvisuals)

Finally, this year saw the addition of a new healing area with a chai tent, yoga workshops, fire pit and a cushioned ambient zone for the slow and deep end of the spectrum. This was the home of sounds for those looking to dip out of the full flow, with dub, reggae, downtempo house and world music taking over. Having a space to wind down en route to the campsite was a nice addition and I look forward to seeing how the area progresses in future years.

Virgo is a festival firmly entrenched in the grassroots of the UK music scene. Of course, there are brilliant headline acts and a wonderful setting but the heart and soul of this festival is its commitment to the underground and to the relationships at the heart of it all. This is a festival that celebrates the parties and the friends that are flourishing and the bottom line is that Virgo will always be about crate diggers, selectors and good people. The growth here seems to be focused on an attempt to give balance to the festival site and to make it a more immersive experience by spreading out the genres and sounds.

© Photography by Jake Davis (fb.com/hungryvisuals)

Progression, it seems, does not necessarily mean filling a line up with loads of producers that every man and his dog have heard of. The overall result is a festival that is not trying too hard to gain numbers and appeal to the mass, but instead is putting trust in its approach and its people.

Thank you Virgo.

Fractal Club has the perfect recipe to get you moving.

It seems that the long lost art of secret parties has somewhat subsided in recent times.  In lieu of huge warehouse raves with extensive production budgets and a myriad of world class acts.

So when I was offered the opportunity to head north of the border to Edinburgh and witness the Launch Party of Fractal Club, I grabbed it by the horns and with nothing more than a vague sense of who was playing and no idea about the city; I braved the long journey.

Edinburgh is no stranger to incredible nightlife. I had it on good authority that the guy behind Fractal Club had spent many years helping to sculpt what it has become today.  Having worked with nights such as Musika bringing a whole manner of heavyweights such as Ame, Seth Troxler and Carl Cox to the historical streets; as well as the expertly curated Nightvision which has played host to everyone from Groove Armada to Drum and Bass royalty Andy C.

The mystery was the first part of the fun; albeit a bold move by the promoters.  To expect punters to pay hard earned cash for a night where neither the artist nor the venue were common knowledge was ballsy… but I had faith.

dinky

Having spent the day being a tourist the anticipation was becoming too much.  By the time the lunch had come around, I’d “managed to guess” who was playing and soon after it was released.

Having spent her formative years as a resident at Berlin’s Panorama Bar, Chilean born Dinky was set to play her first set in Edinburgh – but speaking to the promoters they made it very clear that this was not through a lack of trying.

The night drew in and the location was also revealed.  The night was to be held in the loft above The Mash House, which draws in punters on the remarkable sound system alone. Having played host to the likes of Optimo and Prosumer in the past; the space above seemed like a great choice.

Upon arrival the space was filled with deep grooves and a familiar sound of the kick drum, with the night being started off by UNTITLED LDN Residents E.Wan and Chris G. Due to a forgotten USB the lads warmed up the crowd with an eclectic selection of vinyl such as Rozzo’s minimal groover “Nyota’.

As their set came to a close E.Wan dropped the funky afro inspired “Moov ya Booz’ by Jeremiah and it was through these dulcet tones the night came to its headliner, Dinky.  She played with such precision and so effortlessly that it was no surprise that she entranced the crowd long into the night with her the sweet sounds of techno.  Her set came to a serene climax in the form of Lapsley’s “Operator’ remixed by DJ Koze.  And if one tune could accurately embody the event this was it.

A night of funk and groove was enjoyed by all, Fractal Club had firmly cemented itself on its opening night as the new player in Edinburgh’s nightlife scene, and with the likes of Secretsundaze and Nick Hoppner taking up the reins into 2017 we only expect more from the team.

loveinternational

Love International is the spiritual successor of the acclaimed original Croatian odyssey, The Garden Festival, and seeks to build upon the decade’s worth of magic created already in the region. By day a harmonious holiday beneath the sizzling sun, and by dusk as the beats shift gear and introduce each balmy night beneath a canopy of stars, the intimate setting holds a unique energy, sound tracked by some of the world’s leading underground DJs and producers, drawing a vibrant and diverse audience from across the world to this tiny strip of paradise.

Dixon is one the esteemed Innervisions’ lynchpins and cited as one of electronic music’s most important DJs and producers, whilst Motor City Drum Ensemble, Ben UFO, Gerd Janson, Craig Richards, Joy Orbison, Midland and Horse Meat Disco bring their own party mayhem. Add to this Prosumer is a mercurial master behind the decks, whilst Hunee – one of the year’s biggest stars – segues all kinds of genres across his scintillating sets. Many people’s favourite place, Barbarella’s, is nestled just a few miles away; a fully open air club which is now regarded as one of the best in the world, a simply breath-taking place to party from midnight and see the sun’s rise at dawn, breaking over the ridge of pine trees which surround it. Every DJ who has played here says it is one of the most amazing settings they have experienced.

Dave Harvey, one of Love International’s founders, explains that: “We are feeling really great about Love International and continuing the great work The Garden Festival family created here over the last ten years. What we are doing is going to have its own vibe and some new elements, but at the same time we are seeking to retain and embrace what made The Garden so good – that family feel to it all, everyone knowing everyone else, all set in this incredible site on the coast. For us it’s about continuing that growth in our own way, so people who came to The Garden will find Love International familiar to them, but at the same time it will be a new experience. We feel we have got some great names onboard for our first announcement, with loads more to come in January.”

Many more names will be announced in the New Year, along with boat and club parties and exciting new elements to Love International.

“If you watch old episodes of Star Trek, their vision of the future seems funny and old fashioned. But a lot of their ideas did shape the future. So; it’s both visionary and nostalgic.”

Prosumer, real name Achim Brandenburg, had a day job in advertising whilst he was making his mark as a fledgling producer. Whilst in many other cases this may have resulted in an artist with a super savvy, multi platform, achingly modern marketing image, it led Achim down a more thoughtful path.

Formerly one of Berlin’s best kept secrets (back when Berlin was clubbing’s best kept secret, and clubbing was itself, a pretty well kept secret) the producer moved to Edinburgh in 2012, giving up his long running residency at Panorama bar, citing a need for more space and freedom. The move in itself is indeed because, as the hipsters scream, Berlin is changing. But Prosumer’s take on the situation has got more to do with what’s going on inside DJ booths, rather than the changing standards behind door-entry policies. “When I speak to my friends who have spent all their lives in Berlin-” Achim himself moved there from Saarbruecken, where he spent his childhood – “they were there to experience the fall of the Berlin wall. Compared with that they’re not particularly overwhelmed with any massive ‘change’ in the city..”. However, Achim does admit the move to Edinburgh wasn’t just on a whim: “I can’t speak for everyone, but for me it has lost a bit of it’s mix. It had a wild mix. People, parties, sounds. Now, everything, every night has become professionalised, specialised, placed into it’s own niche.” As a result of the standardising of the clubbing community “Maybe my own focus has changed, but I feel a lot of the places you go to are quite samey.”

prosumer3.jpg

For Achim, standardising a sound is the last thing on the agenda. His own signature style – analoguey, house-friendly techno is the result of a long journey. “Normally I record it to tape, then just play it for months and months, then decide eventually, ‘ah, it’s not that bad!’” before it ever sees the light of day. Meanwhile his actual production is kept as physical as possible – drum machines and analog synths are the order of the day. His thinking behind that is twofold. The first is practical “When I started out I was working in advertising, and studying graphic design. I spent all my time in front of  a computer. So when it came to making music in my free time, I wanted to be as far away from a computer as possible.”

When we start discussing the fact that there’s a number of – particularly European techno – producers out there who maintain a similar philosophy on music away from the macbook, Achim pauses, opening with “I really can’t speak for anyone but myself” (a phrase the thoughtful German has used in several questions so far) before launching into a deep discussion on his philosophy behind electronic music: “I…..I like people. I like the human factor in music. Old synths, drum machines aren’t alive but they have personalities, eccentricities. When you listen to the sound they make, it transports you back to their origin – to places like Detroit for example, where people were making this music as a kind of vision, a hope for a better future. I think that’s a lot more human than shiny stuff made specifically to packed dancefloors.”

prosumer2.jpg

Not that packing dancefloors is something Prosumer is against. He may have retreated to Edinburgh because “There are DJs out there who can travel and make music on the move. I need time to think. I need quiet weekends in the studio” however word of the producer that has always done things his own way has spread. Other producers rate him for his sound, production ability and personal conviction, whilst bloggers like him for his shyness of social media and his insistence of, where possible, playing on vinyl (much of which was bought from a single store – Hard Wax Berlin). It’s not just indoor floors either: he’s playing Croatian fittingly-alternate electronic installments Electric Elephant and The Garden Festival this summer – both known birthing pools of independent electronic thinkers – that have seen the likes of Seth Troxler and Axel Bowman pass through their gates in previous years. He’s got a label launch in the pipeline, which he reports in a refreshingly un-media-prepped answer “It’s with my good friend Murat Tepeli, it’s going to be called Potion. That’s all we got so far”. Has his move into  label work changed his take on production? “Well…no. Although now I guess if I make a track I’m going to have to put it out there a bit quicker!” he laughs.

It’s all go for Achim in 2014, but if anything, he’s become even more introspective than he was years ago pondering the reasons behind techno’s conflicting visionary and nostalgic nature. He’s escaped to Edinburgh, he’s plotting a label and a string of international gigs, yet increasingly he talks of context: “You start with Detroit, and Chicago sounds, then you hear the underground music of New York, and as you get older, you start to get intrigued by the history of all this – about where it came from.” Once again he’s quick to reassert this is just his personal opinion, however “It comes down to longing, making music that reflects a better future. Maybe that’s why Berlin’s changed, because people aren’t living with the same financial pressure.” Perhaps then, Achim proves the exception. Living in relative exile he may be, but he’s certainly a man on the make. Lucky for Prosumer, the producer’s consumers may be of a diverse financial background, but all are agreed the man continues to break new ground.

Tief at Corsica is always a highly anticipated event, having an instinctive ear for the best kept secrets of underground music. This time they were joined by, The Mole, Arttu’s live set, Bradley Zero and the Tief residents, with Prosumer modestly sitting on top.

The Tief residents managed to set the mood very accurately, playing percussion driven house grooves which welcomed clubbers onto the dance floor before having a chance to head to the bar. Playing vinyl only, it was a glimpse of how the night would continue. A few hours after midnight had struck, the dance floor was packed with a crowd full of smiles, which only got bigger when Prosumer’s ‘Forever’ mix was teased in, sending drinks towards the sky alongside an uproar.

After a brief pause, it was visible that the Mole had taken the stage. A darker tone could be sensed while he opened with a Trevino record. The crowd had to assume a different stance after previously being showered by soulful female vocals with the Mole taking them deeper. As the set built onwards, the previously loud crowd seemed to be hypnotized by the cavernous techno they were now hearing. That was until the words ‘I came into the world naked, and I intend on leaving the same way’ echoed throughout room 1, the phrase followed by the sound of heavily compressed drums and the crowd receiving very well, marching away shoulder to shoulder all the way through until the Mole had finished what he had to offer.

Prosumer was then visible on stage, prepping up case full of wax, which was followed moments later with iconic synth stabs after the reins were handed to him by the Mole. The opening song contained samples of bird calls which soothed the crowd as if the night were starting again and they were to start their journey with him. Within a few tracks he had introduced his first vocal track synonymous with his track lists and by now the crowd had synchronised their dancing with the bob of the Disk Jockeys head. Throughout the night, his focus was on the track playing and what’s going to come next, occasionally taking the odd moment out to smile at the crowd. His ethereal presence was outshone only by the single light bulb present in the booth, which revealed him singing along to each vocal track. The crowd were wary of him as he dug through his record box, knowing that he has a gift for taking each track to a new level, song after song. Flicking through his rolodex of records for mere seconds before unleashing the next bomb on the dancefloor.

The main bulk of the crowd did not thin throughout the whole night, and managed to be of high spirits during the entirety of the event. Tief events have a natural habit of attracting the right educated crowd and with many nights planned ahead, do not seem like they are slacking one bit.

Selecting Who Needs To Be Heard https://datatransmission.co/blog/selecting-who-needs-be-heard/ https://datatransmission.co/blog/selecting-who-needs-be-heard/#respond Sat, 01 Mar 2014 11:22:00 +0000 http://datatrans.wpengine.com/news/selecting-who-needs-be-heard/ Hugo Moneypenny can lay claim to being responsible for some of the most forwarding thinking bookings this side of 2010, that the UK and indeed the world, has seen. Setting up a club night with a vision of bringing the freshest sounds of the underground, no matter what their placement is on the radar, is one shared by many budding promoters right across the UK.

Many start out with a string of successful parties. The music is sick, the vibe is electric, they are breaking even and sometimes making a pretty penny.

Soon the feeling of godliness washes over them and it either falls humbly, or envelopes them with a Zeppelin sized ego. At some point the parties go a little sour. Less people come, DJs don’t perform as expected, or a fight or three breaks out. Money is nothing but lost and hearts fall away from that initial rose tinted image.

Promoting clandestine music events is definitely not for fellows with a weak spirit and increasingly less so for anyone that can’t afford to put up and lose a grand or two. Oh the joys that student loans can bring.

They say the average life span of a club night is three years, so in that respect the Manchester and Leeds based Selective Hearing has already exceeded expectations. A look back at previous bookings however and you realise they were responsible for giving a world debut to Akkord. The duo received critical acclaim for their debut album last year on Houndstooth and were marked out as one of the very best live acts around. Still, the longevity of the night is of secondary concern, when marking its reputation as a beacon of the underground. Their daring nature and persistent frequency of A-grade bookings is the be all and end all when rating how they’ve done over the years.

The brains and brawn behind the night is a fellow who, on paper sounds like a posh Etonian toff, maybe with an interest in ‘deep house yaaa’. Though once his mouth is open you wouldn’t be far wrong in thinking he’s the kinda guy to nick a tenner out your pocket and show you how he’s done it. All in the name of a good laugh though of course. Hugo Monypenny can lay claim to being responsible for some of the most forwarding thinking bookings this side of 2010, that the UK and indeed the world, has seen. He’s experienced the good times, the not so good times and the absolutely lose your shoes type of good times. So in the midst of his 4 years, 4 party celebratory bonanza, I caught up with him for a chat about all things life, art and music.

Afternoon Mr Monypenny, we’ll get straight down to business. Which of the 4 shows were you most excited about booking?

Them all. If we’re talking about ones that feel good excited, then Mano Le Tough  and Prosumer. Purely Because I’ve wanted Mano Le Tough & Prosumer for donkeys years and they’re pretty hard to get. If we’re talking excited for which is the most exciting in terms of music, I’d say probably Ron Morelli / Palms Trax or Clark / Shed. To be honest, I’m like a little kid in a sweet shop when booking line ups, I’m constantly excited.

Will there be 4 more years?

Why not?

objekt2.jpg

Lots of reasons I guess, but that is a good attitude to have. Looking back which has been your favourite so far?

It’s hard to pin point an exact event. It’s probably easier to ask which ones have been my least favourite, because I enjoy them all, however I’d say, purely for vibe, either Akkord & Objekt at Joshua Brooks, or Paul Woolford & Eliphino for boxing day in Leeds last year (purely for selfish reasons).

Fair enough. Where’s been the best place you’ve thrown a party?

There’s this one warehouse in Salford that a few friends used to run, anybody who knows, knows. But that place is incredible, the two parties we did there will definitely go down as two of the best. Also, Hidden in Manchester is sick, hard work (or at least it was when we did our thang there) . . . also, any party we’ve thrown in the Fort out at Dimensions Festival has to be up there, that places is the bees knees.

Yeah I’ve experience those parties in the warehouse myself and must agree on their quality. Dimensions is a definite must this year as well. Who has been the most interesting dinner talk from previous acts?

I try to avoid taking DJs out for dinner. They always want to go to the most expensive places, especially when my wallet is feeling its most empty. But maybe Bleak to be honest, we took him to some snide Chinese Restaurant, he proceeded to tell us exactly what we should eat, and to be fair, he was bang on the mark, but he was also a lovely guy, lots of stories and jokes, just how I like them!

A bloke who knows what he wants and gives good banter is surely a good bloke in anyone’s book. If money were no issue, who would you book, where would the party be and why would you book them there?

If money were no issue, I’d probably want to book the 180+ acts that we’ve had play for us over the past four years, in one mammoth two night event. Like, everyone from DJ EZ to Skudge. Where? Yosemite National Forest, hands down the most beautiful place I ever did go.

Do you have selective hearing?

Sorry, selective what?

If you didn’t promote music what would you promote?

I wouldn’t be doing it to be honest, I’d of probably stayed in Uni, finished my acting degree and now be an out of work actor getting bit part roles on Holby City & Doctors.
Or I’d promote midget wrestling, which ever gets me more girls.

Describe your ideal clubber…

Fucking steaming.

When did you last know the top 10 uk singles charts by heart?

Last week, but it changes each week doesn’t it? Does it?  I haven’t done my research this week though, all I know is Lorde is sick.

You can catch the next Selective Hearing in Manchester this tonight at Gorilla, where they have techno heavyweight Shed, electronic Guru Clark and the ever tasty Clouds playing for them. Following that the final part of their fourth birthday celebrations culminates in Leeds with Ron Morelli, Kowton and Palms Trax on the 21st of March.
