UKF and RIOT Noise are teaming up with the Young Urban Arts Foundation (YUAF) for ‘The DROP Drum & Bass Takeover’ – a two-day event that’s set to shake up London’s youth Drum & Bass scene. Running from 2pm to 8pm on 29th and 30th October at Greenwich Peninsula, this takeover is all about empowering young Londoners with workshops led by top-notch industry pros, spotlighting just how transformative music and creativity can be.

“Drum & Bass was my lifeline growing up, so for my charity to partner with UKF, RIOT Noise and the UK’s leading DJs and producers on this event, to raise awareness, give back and empower more young people together is a very powerful thing. We all understand the power of music and creativity and the ability to create safe havens, increase well-being and change lives. I’m so excited to see what amazing things we can achieve together, and a huge thank you to every single person who will contribute and has brought this magical event together.”Indigo Reign (Kerry O’Brien), Founder of YUAF

As the long-standing home of bass music, UKF has been bringing beats and bass to global audiences for 15 years. They’re throwing a huge celebration at Drumsheds in December and have handpicked some of the finest artists from that lineup to share their knowledge and give back to the next generation.

Indigo Reign (centre)

“We’re thrilled to be working with YUAF on their mission to empower the lives of young people by collaborating on a special two days of programming on their bus, to help discover and bring through the next generation of bass music fans.” Luke Hood, founder of UKF

Over the two days, there’ll be hands-on workshops covering everything from music production to DJing, radio presenting, and topline writing – all taking place on YUAF’s ultra-cool double-decker media outreach bus. It’s open to young creatives aged 16-25, with BBC Radio 1‘s Charlie Tee, Flava D, Anaïs, Jackum, Shosh, and Subten leading sessions. Our good friend Carly Wilford and two of our homegrown DJs from Milton Keynes DAIN and Hardisty will also be there.

“At RIOT Noise, we believe in the power of music transforming lives. We are humbled to be partnering with the Young Urban Arts Foundation and UKF as part of our commitment to empower the next generation of artists. Together, we’re equipping young people with the skills to produce music and DJ, fostering creativity and self-expression in urban communities.”Nicky Maciocia, founder of RIOT Noise

YUAF, founded in 2009 by pioneering Drum & Bass MC Indigo Reign, has reached over 22,000 young people across London. The charity works in areas where access to creative opportunities is limited, helping those most at risk of exploitation or crime find their way through music and the arts. With youth funding in short supply, YUAF’s work brings a much-needed spark of hope and possibility to these communities.

Day in and day out, their team of producers, songwriters, lyricists, and visual artists are out there on the streets, in schools, and on estates. They offer beat-making workshops and help connect young creatives with valuable training and work experience, opening doors in an industry that can be hard to crack into.

“We are delighted to support YUAF’s mission to enrich young lives through music, arts, and creativity. Our past collaborations with YUAF have been incredibly rewarding, and we’re excited to offer new opportunities to young people on Greenwich Peninsula and across London.”Laura Flanagan, Marketing Director at Greenwich Peninsula

Entry is free for this event but you still need to grab a ticket which you can do here!

Undoubtedly, one of the most iconic releases in the extensive NHS archive, B-complex makes a triumphant return to Hospital Records with an exhilarating reimagining of her seminal work, the ‘Beautiful Lies’ EP. This reissue features remixes by Mandidextrous, Rameses B, and a fresh edit crafted by B-complex herself. The original anthem has amassed an impressive tens of millions of plays across various platforms, firmly establishing ‘Beautiful Lies’ as one of the most beloved drum & bass tracks to have successfully resonated with audiences worldwide.

“‘Beautiful Lies’ helped me gather confidence and come out as my true self. The song is lyricless, and as it became a viral sensation, people started uploading videos with montages, often perfectly picking images that described what I felt as I made it, proof to me, that music is indeed a universal language. It became its own entity, and I felt like a proud parent watching it influence peoples’ lives. Many of you came to tell me how it was the song that opened the world of drum & bass for them, or how it helped them to overcome lows in their lives.”B-complex

Kicking things off, B-complex introduces the EP with ‘Beautiful Lies (Edit),’ a modern 2023 rendition that injects a fresh sonic vitality into the original masterpiece. The anthemic vocal chops, razor-sharp reese basslines, and powerhouse drums transport the nostalgic essence of the track seamlessly into contemporary soundsystems.

From AJ Tracey‘s lyrical prowess in the original to its widespread inclusion in countless gaming montages, ‘Beautiful Lies’ continues to bask in its status as a timeless Drum & Bass classic, even thirteen years after its initial release. Notably, B-complex’s VIP rendition of the track has garnered a staggering 19 million views on the UKF Drum & Bass channel, solidifying its place as one of their most popular uploads of all time.

Check out our premiere of ‘Beautiful Lies’ (Edit) below. The release dropped last Thursday 8th September via Hospital Records. Make sure you grab a copy from here!

Rolling into 2023 with a new mind-bending single are Dutch producers, composers and multi-instrumentalists DROELOE and IMANU with ‘Catalyst’ which is being released via UKF today (Thursday 16th February). Having previously released on Bitbird, Lowly Records, CloudKid and plenty more, with music in the same lane as ODESZA and Flume, and supporting artists such as San Holo, DROELOE has started merging his sound with Drum & Bass. Produced in collaboration with one of the biggest rising stars in the D&B scene IMANU, the new single ‘Catalyst’ explores experimental music sounds that merge elements of Drum & Bass with fast drums, aggressive yet energetic basslines and chilling build-ups. Well known for his forward-thinking production style, DROELOE has been keeping audiences on their toes throughout the years.

Since DROELOE’s first release in 2016, he’s released two albums and gone on to clock over 200 million streams on Spotify alone. His previous work has seen support from the likes of Dancing Astronaut, We Rave You and DJ Times. With IMANU also holding over 600K monthly listeners on Spotify and holding a worldwide fanbase, the collaboration between DROELOE and IMANU couldn’t be more anticipated by their impressive fan base. Rising to the spotlight at the age of just 16 with his brutalist style of music, IMANU has developed his presence on the scene as one of the greats. Now in his early 20’s he’s already had releases on significant labels such as Deadbeats, UKF and VISION, he’s remixed the likes of Apashe, TOKiMONSTA and What So Not and Skrillex and already collaborated with the likes of Noisia, KUČKA, Pham and josh pan. IMANU has previously been supported by Attack Magazine, ADE, Magnetic Mag and The Electric Hawk.

DROELOE X IMANU came together after their collaboration on IMANU’s ‘UNFOLD’ album released on Deadbeats last year – their track ‘Shoyu’ has received 1.1 million streams and over 5 million streams on ‘Unfold’ on Spotify alone.

‘Catalyst’ begins with a glitchy presence, demonstrating the pair’s deeply embedded skills in producing mind-bending electronic sounds. The intro builds up with fast synthesized vocals, chord bends and glitchy sounds and develops into a hard-hitting sound of liquid D&B. There’s no surprise to see that DROELOE’s fan base lies in all corners of the globe. His impressive musical ideology is reinforced through keen visual storytelling, hiding easter eggs in his artwork and producing frequent social media content.

Check out the track below and grab it from here!

Justin Hawkes charged onto the DnB scene under his Flite moniker with the self-released track ‘Blue Spark’ in 2013, with Liquicity featuring the seminal track on their influential YouTube channel. His ability to span soft-toned character to sheer euphoric brilliance through the dark, earth-shaking depths of bass music soon found him many fans, including some of the world’s top DJs, such as Andy C, Porter Robinson, RL Grime, Netsky, Friction, Sub Focus, Wilkinson and many more.

His relationship with UKF started when they featured his releases ‘Featherfall’ and ‘Colorless’ in 2014, released on Bass Explorer‘s label Sup Yo! And Liquicity Records, respectively. His 2017 EP ‘The Cure,’ however, dropped on Liquicity, truly marked a momentous shift in his music career, releasing a flurry of bangers on labels such as Hospitality, Monstercat, and UKF and a slew of festival appearances in Europe and the US.

In 2020 dropped the Flite moniker in favour of Justin Hawkes, arising like a phoenix from the ashes with roof-tearing releases ‘Lift Off The Roof’ (D&B Arena) and ‘The Underground’. He channelled his experiences in the US rave scene with songs such as ‘IJDK’ and a remix for REAPER‘s ‘Barricade’. And even though these releases were incredibly successful, the controversy surrounding the Flite moniker, with personal attacks against Hawkes’ honour during a global pandemic and huge politically uncertain times, left a serious mark – one that he would explore on his debut album ‘Existential.’

“Existential manifests as a self-portrait. It weaves between my thoughts, philosophy, and history, both within my career as a Drum & Bass artist in America and internally through the unknown future. The title itself represents the existential scenarios that have formed who I am, exploring my journey through crisis, the weight and forgotten wisdom of the past, and even the sometimes-comedic power of being an outlier.”

Justin Hawkes

Having grown up in a small town in Virginia, Justin wasn’t born into the DnB scene. Influences such as Justin’s early stint in his school’s marching band playing trumpet and his love for blues, rock, jazz, folk, and gaming, have found their way onto the album. His family was deeply entrenched in more ‘traditional’ American music genres such as Country and Americana, with his uncle Andrew Hellier playing guitar for Modern Yesterday and Rotoglow. His family and his family’s influences can be heard on the standout single ‘Better Than Gold,’ featuring none other than his uncle on vocals and father on mandolin and acoustic guitar. If there was ever a genre-busting tune, this Country Rock-meets-DnB would be it.

But it’s not all fun and games – ‘Existential’ explores deeper themes, such as the idea that humanity is encouraging its own extinction and what it means to be alive at a time when the world feels like it’s collapsing in on itself. Tragedy, humanity is one such track that describes the many beautiful yet tragic paradoxes humans go through or create for themselves.

Featuring 15 tracks that showcase Hawkes’ flawless and diverse style as a producer, ‘Existential’ feels less like an album and more like a sonic journey through the artist’s psyche. From the opening notes of tracks like ‘Inheritance’ and ‘Arbiter’ (featuring PAV4N from Foreign Beggars), which convey power and intensity, to the more mellow and rock-infused ‘The End of an Empire,’ Hawkes brings a fix for an extensive palette of emotions.

“I’m a big film guy, often leaning towards the existential questions and mysterious possibilities of human progress. The organic and moving sounds of composers like Jon Hopkins and Hans Zimmer really interest me as well, and that played a key part in my mindset while producing the album. I am pleased that ‘Existential’ as a body of work grasps the essence of what makes me think, feel, and makes me myself, all within a musical format I am exceptionally passionate about.”

Justin Hawkes

To bring 2022 to a close for us and to celebrate the release of Justin’s ‘Existential’ LP, he has recorded and exclusive mix for our Renegade Riddims series. The mix features music from the likes of himself (obviously!), Noisia, Camo & Krooked, Delta Heavy, Reaper, IMANU, Hadley, Mat Zo, Bensley, Mefjus, Kanine, Teddy Killerz and loads more!

Q&A:

Sum up this mix in 10 words…

A real melting pot of vibe riders and tangy bangers.

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

My personal favourite track on there is probably Oakwite – Technology, that’s an absolute weapon.

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

The secret ingredient is definitely the tech-flavoured modern sounds mixing with melodic tunes.

Tell us about your next EP.

I’ve just finished my debut album, so I’m eager to spend some time discovering where my mind might take me next in music, and which challenges I should set for myself.

What have you got coming up?

I’m just about to play Countdown NYE in San Bernardino California for Insomniac on New Year’s Eve, and 2023 is already loading up with gigs. Going to be a very busy year!

When was the last time you actually raved?

If we’re talking RAVE rave, I haven’t actually had the chance to go to anything super underground in a long time! It’s been a minute, that’s for sure! Blessed to have played a ton of sick events in the last few years.

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?

Just want to give love to everyone listening out there, and go check out my debut album ‘Existential’ on UKF’s Pilot Records! Big up!

Starting out as just two Youtube channels back in 2009, UKF have risen to extreme heights within the music game. Their climb has seen them expand into a high-profile brand representing all underground genres. 2019 marked their ten-year anniversary and there was no better way to celebrate that than with a big old rave UKF10 LDN. With the venue set as Studio 338 and a seriously stacked line-up, it seemed as if we were going to be in for one hell of a celebration. The line-up, spread over two rooms, consisted of some serious talent within UK bass music, drum & bass, grime and dubstep. Names such as Distinkt, Dimension, Bushbaby, Notion, Grafix, Dilemma, Plastician and Joker were getting our mouths watering for the night ahead.

Studio 338, 10:30pm. We had arrived nice and early, due to the stacked set-times, and the pre-rave feelings were out in full force, we were itching to get inside. We skipped past security and went straight into the main room. Dark red mood lighting, heavy subs and some wicked visuals, the stage was set and the music was booming from the off. First in charge for us on the night when we arrived was someone who’s been making some serious waves in the past couple of years, Distinkt. Known for his heavy bass-filled production and fresh from his recent EP on Diplo’s Mad Decent label, he was going in, dropping some serious floor smashers.

Next in charge was another UK bass don, Notion. Someone else who has been going from strength to strength in the past year. With a recent release on Tiesto’s Musical Freedom label, Notion took control of the decks and was showing just what he was made of. Dropping tracks like Taiki Nulight – ‘Kush’ (Ft. Dread MC) and Notion – ‘Real’, Notion was tearing 338 a new one in true UK bass style and the crowd were loving it. With a fine selection of bouncy house tracks and some proper face-melters, the night was starting to take shape. The visuals of the night were really adding to the underground UKF atmosphere, a distorted webcam view of the DJ from the point of view of the decks which flashed up every now and then. A really cool touch.

It was time to take a step away from UK bass music now and to start the delve into drum and bass. Formally apart of Fred V & Grafix, it was time for Grafix to step up and raise the tempo. Wasting no time at all, Grafix was getting everyone in the dancefloor spirit as he dropped some of his own tracks such as Grafix – ‘Refuge’ (ft. Ruth Royall) and Grafix – ‘Rain Fall Down’. Nothing too heavy but just enough energy to bring the crowd up a step or two. Grafix was really shelling the UKF vibe and setting the stage for who else but Dimension to take over.

The time was now 1am, the night was in full swing and Dimension was now in control. Now if you know anything about Dimension, you’ll know that he’s all about the atmosphere. The lights were brought completely down apart from one white spotlight on the decks and the sound of Dimension’s intro started, slowly filling the room. Spinning a combination of new bits and fan favourites such as Dimension – ‘Pull Me Under’ and Dimension – ‘If You Want To’, Dimension had raised the level completely and was dishing out some serious heat.

Next up we decided to amble on over to room 2 for a little switch up. We arrived just in time for some of Joker’s set. We recently saw his set at Outlook Festival so we knew just what was in store for us. The room was perfect, small and intimate. Serving up some proper old school style dubstep, the basslines were tearing the floor to shreds.

After a little freshen up we headed back into the main room for The Prototypes. We hadn’t seen the Prototypes for a while but knew about the energy they always bring to the table. With a fine mix of blends and double drops, they pumped out some proper steppers and vocal numbers. Keeping the vibe in the place high, they controlled the crowd perfectly. Dropping some serious heavy hitters as well as vocal pleasers like their much-known tracks The Prototypes – ‘Pop It Off (feat. Mad Hed City)’ and The Prototypes – ‘Electric’.

The time was now 4am and even though there were still two hours to go, we felt as though it was time to call it a night. A night with so many artists, so much different music, it really was a proper celebration for the UKF crew. Here’s to the next ten!

The post Reviewed: Forbidden Forest Sept 2017 appeared first on Data Transmission.

]]>

After an amazing ‘17 festival season it was time to end on a high, with that I made my second journey of the year up north, for the fantastically named Forbidden Forest. The forest rave uses the beautiful landscape of Donnington Park as its backdrop, which creates an Alice in Wonderland experience that I feel no other festival has been able to achieve, at least not in my experience!

First debuting in the Derbyshire park in 2016 with two sell-out dates in May and September, with the promise of a diverse musical experience including artists such as Richy Ahmed, Solardo, Chris Lorenzo and Big Narstie on the lineup, they truly cemented themselves as a festival to keep your eye out for in the years to come. This year they continued where they left off with a collection of noteworthy dj’s across both festival dates and musical lineup to suit the more diverse palette. April’s edition hosted wAFF, Latmun, My Nu Leng and TDQ on the bill starting the summer with a bang and September followed suit presenting Bugzy Malone, Hazard, Jacky, De La swing and Steve Lawler, closing out the festival season the only way they know how, with classic bangers and dirty beats.

The whole week leading up to the festival the weather hadn’t been the best and there were whispers of thunderstorms threatening to make an appearance on festival day. The night before was full of stormy rain and gale force winds, well maybe not quite gale force but to this city girl, it certainly felt that way, thankfully waking up Saturday morning with not a rain cloud in sight bolstered my hopes for a (relatively) water free day. The unique forest event runs for a solid 12 hours, something rarely heard of on the festival circuit, with most having a cut of time between 10/11 due to noise pollution, residential areas and whatever other excuses we have to suffer! So with that in mind, I set out early to get in the maximum rave offering.

Only a short distance travelled from my hotel to get my music taste buds following. I joined the crowds, already in high spirits, struggling to stay vertical on the slip and slide mud tracks created by the heavens the night prior. Forbidden Forest then…An intimate gathering for the musically like-minded, with this in mind the event planners had mapped everything marvellously, each stage was within a short walking distance of each other and positioned in such a way that no clash or saturation of sound could be heard from the respective places, maintaining the intimacy throughout, which is too often lost in festivals, in addition, the organisers, foreseeing the muddy day ahead had laid out straw so there were no health and safety mishaps.

Making my way inside to find what lay in wait, I can already hear the sound of hard drum and bass pumping out from beyond the tree line, it is very early in the day and the park is rapidly filling with revellers. Following suit with many festivals and events alike, Forbidden Forest has opted for a token drink system, not my favourite, as you always run the risk of overbuying tokens and not getting your money back, not so much an issue here but the drinks were priced as one would expect at a festival, well, it was for me, but I would imagine that the northern crowd were somewhat taken aback at a drink price in line with London Clubs.

The festival hosts four stages but it’s the Novum stage that’s calling me, Del-30 are in the middle of their set, the sun is shining and everyone in good spirits. I’ve noticed the vibe and crowd at these Northern parties are happier, this is a coming together of friends and associates, no bad vibes, no snobby behaviour, no stuck up attitudes and everyone is up for a chat, being a Londoner I’m used to minimal eye contact and looking at someone with cautious eyes and bewilderment at the mere prospect of being asked “are you having a good time” and I will tell you something, this atmosphere improves the experience tenfold! Unity for the love of music!

Del-30 really get the crowd going, rolling tech house continuously flowing from the speakers, the small clearing in the woods filling with bodies and before long it is time for Monki to grace the decks, in light of Bestival running concurrently with Forbidden Forest, organisers have still managed to pull in an impressive array of diversity in all of its iterations, on this occasion in the form of Monki, who sets a storming precedent in the woods. A crowd favourite it seems, as soon as she steps into the impressively designed booth the northern crowd chant her name and rightly so, the BBC Radio 1 DJ, well known for championing the sound of the underground is masterful to watch. The crowd are already hyped she takes us through to late afternoon, thankfully the rain has held off, the atmosphere within the forest is electric. Monki finishes up her pace setting set and paves the way for Jacky B2B De La Swing.

A match made in DJ heaven is how I would describe this back to back. With Elrow resident De La Swing and loveable quirky maestro Jacky bringing their rolling tech beats flecked with everything from disco through to crowd favourites such as Music Sounds Better With You, keeping in line with the overall feel of this day festival, maintaining the appeal to a wider audience, what more could a music lover ask for. Changing the atmosphere ever so slightly as we move into the September evening, shifting more towards the bouncing tech house, the mainstay sound of Elrow.

Time to check out the other stages, the Kooky stage had grime MC favourite Bugzy Malone getting the people of Donnington Park hyped up, with the crowd at the UKF stage enjoying longstanding Hospitality records family member Logistics, proving again that Drum ‘n’ Bass is here to make the distance with electronic music. Both stages full with drunken happy festival revellers.

One of the great things I loved about Forbidden Forest is there no over the top aesthetics, there are some decorative features, maybe a hanging heart here or some strategically placed sheets in trees there, but the decor is mostly on or around the stages, the designers instead opting to use the natural forest as decoration.

The sun is beginning to set, making this already picturesque day even more beautiful. Abode resident GW Harrison does what he does best, taking the Novum house on a journey, pardon the pun. Pirate Copy and Darius Syrossian keep the vibe going, the Do Not Sleep boss throwing some nostalgia into the crowd with Underworld’s Born Slippy, although I don’t think most of the festival goers were over 25 they loved it nonetheless.

Viva Warriors head honcho Steve Lawler takes over as the stars begin to peek through the clouds, the light show in the woods only making the atmosphere more out of this world, lasers firing off amongst the trees, whole parts of the forest illuminated in a variety of lights, truly magical. Steve shows us why he has had a packed out year playing around the world, one of my favorite DJs, his sets are rarely a replication of the last he played and his music library goes vast and deep, of all the DJs on the lineup this is one I would recommend going out of your way to see, Lawlers connection to the crowd is second to none. An hour and a half is not enough for me but his time, unfortunately, is approaching its end.

Closing this ultimate forest rave is none other than Patrick Topping, having already done his Bestival set earlier in the day he was on a roll with his fezzy appearances. A favourite within the circuit, having fulfilled numerous dates in Ibiza there was no chance of disappointing the northern crowd, Patrick Topping continues to impress across the tech house scene and for a DJ who is relatively young compared to counterparts of similar stature I for one can’t wait to see how far this young star will go.

Let us summarise then, a few words come to mind, magical, mystical, wondrous, beautiful, friendly, electric, eclectic, seriously I could go on with this list! A fantastic day had by all who attended, definitely a festival I’ll be returning to in 2018, this place doesn’t have the expensive productions we see at We Are or Secret Garden Party, it doesn’t have the budget of Junction 2 or Mint Festival, but it doesn’t presume to be anything it isn’t and the artists and crowds are of one vibe, and it’s a good one believe me, promoters for festivals and raves alike could learn something from Forbidden Forest, bigger isn’t always better, money doesn’t make a great a party, if you have good artists who love what they do and a little logical effort in planning and design and a sound system with engineers who know how to deliver quality and not just volume you have a recipe for something great.

UKF is planning the biggest event London will hold this New Years Eve.

The world renowned 02 Academy Brixton will play host to another roadblock event as thousands of Londoners will flock to enjoy this all night party where the biggest names in electronic music will take centre stage to celebrate a fantastic 2014 and welcome a brand new year! And with five of their headliners announced before the highly anticipated pre-sale, the most in demand tickets for NYE just got hotter. So lets get in to it… Sub Focus has cemented himself at the top of the electronic music world where only a select few join him. Headlining massive shows worldwide and appearing on countless festival line-ups has meant that the London based artist was an obvious choice to headline this New Year’s Eve extravaganza. This is not the first time he has graced the stage of Brixton Academy, having sold out his very own headline live show earlier this year. To say 2014 has been the year for Sigma would be an underestatement. Topping the official UK charts.. Twice! with ‘Nobody to Love’ & ‘Changing’ have sky rocketed them into stardom and they’ll be celebrating their successful 2014 with UKF. Joining them are Camo & Krooked who blew the crowds away at UKF’s 5th birthday, Calyx & Teebee, one of the most accomplished duos in drum & bass. Winning a whole host of accolades at the most respected Drum&Bass Arena Awards, being shortlisted for Essential Mix of the year and a hectic touring schedule means there is truly no stopping them. Add to this the legendary Hospital Records, Fred V & Grafix and you have one hell of a party!
