Welcoming us back into the world of festivals the one-day treat that is Electric Woodlands did not disappoint. With “11 hours of musical escapism” Bygrave Farm provided us with the space to freely dance and it felt so good!

Starting off with Sam-E and Rumour kicking off before lunchtime, you got a feel for the area, exploring the three different areas, taking in the bunting and lanterns hidden amongst the branches of the enchanting forest, with footpaths lined by trees and immersive stages in vast fields, leading you to the two stages, both standing proud and lit up. The Cru-Cast stage held a worldly aesthetic, floral decorations weeping down from the ceiling of the stage and bunting framing and joining the trees. The main stage where Mollie Collins was kicking things off, was the big boy of the festival, joined with its army of sound systems and light shows, it lived up to its electric name.

By 1 pm you could bounce between infamous DJ Hazard and Royal Hustle over on the Enchanted Forest stage – Foreverland‘s contribution to the party – and K Motionz B2B Turno Feat MC IC3, who stormed the Big Top Stage and really set a wicked energy for the day. The light show illuminated the stage, reining down colour beams onto the artists was a vision.

DJ Q B2B Jamie Duggan lead us to Flava D on The Clearing stage for some lunchtime tunes, and both sets were as lively as the other. You could taste the excitement of all the party-goers in the air and the energy was electric already. Harriet Jaxxon and Richy Ahmed‘s sets were both filled with high energy as you would expect from them and the excitement shared between both artists and audience could be clearly seen.

DnB Allstars wouldn’t be the DnB Allstars we know and love if we didn’t see the notorious Kings of the Rollers with Inja repping it on their stage, and we were in no way let down. Their signature sound blasted through the sound system, carrying the cries of the audience. With the décor and all the production, this set held an enigmatic tone for the rest of the day – and as more of the crowd entered, the festival had definitely begun!

Kanine featuring MC AD was as big and bad as you would hope, and moving from that into the intimate woodlands where Lewis Tala was delivering some extremely tasty treats for the forest creatures was an excellent display of the variety of music the festival was offering. At the same time, the sun started to get a bit lower and the space was filling up, Alcemist B2B Goddard took over from Kings of the Rollers and gave us a real good spout of drums and bass – as a personal fan of this young DJ It felt good to be able to see live performances artists we love again – long live the dance!

Zero lead us into the afternoon on The Clearing which was starting to irradiate with colours reflecting off the leaves above the stages, creating its own sky of seemingly psychedelic movements. As the colours of the uplighting started to get a bit brighter in the trees, the sky was getting closer to dusk which seemed to fit ideally with Darkzy and Window Kid’s exhilarating performance.

The one set I know I had been waiting all day to see and can no doubt speak for many as well is Chase & Status. With so many festivals cancelled I felt lucky to be out in the fields dancing and to see Chase & Status as well felt like a present. They sent out so many energetic and irresistible tunes, the whole set was one huge ball of dynamism. From big sounds to big flames it was the highlight of the evening and lured you into the night. Every tune sang through the speakers into our ears and it was fantastic to hear the familiar favourite and remixes, it was a big show on its own and the hour didn’t last long enough!

As it started getting darker, the forest was coming to life, with all the bunting reflecting the lights creating an ultraviolet tapestry within the trees. There was a different colour everywhere you looked, electric rainbows dancing alongside nature – it was an extraordinary vision. Alisha‘s sounds fitted this mystical and otherworldly vibe perfectly. Sammy Virji B2B Higgo played into the evening on The Big Top with Lazcru FT MC AD hosting another set over in The Clearing.

Bad Boy Chiller Crew switched it up for us on the main stage, and over in The Clearing Skepsis with MC AD doing a double shift on stage was at no lack of oomph! John Summit, another personal favourite on the other side of the spectrum of music was a perfect fit for the setting – with his summery festival made beats and charisma on stage he was genuinely so much fun to watch and dance to, perhaps getting up there with one of the best sets of the night!

Dimension (DJ set) wasn’t one to miss, playing all the signature drops and blends many had been craving over our dance deprived lockdown! Cajama was doing what they do best as they took over from Skepsis‘ set.

Closing the incredible event was Tsuki in The Clearing, who ended on such a high you could hear the cheers of the crowd from all around. Trying to soak in as much as we could, we bounced over to Detlef B2B Latmun who was treating us to a serving of some cosmic flavours. They both took us on a couple of space journeys through beats and bpms!

Lastly, but in no way or means least, the magical Hybrid Minds left us wanting more with such a euphoric set, I could feel smiles from a mile off and the vocal appreciation from the audience must have been overwhelming. It was magnificent to be a part of such a happy crowd! Leaving the woods felt a bit sad as festival season was coming to an end, but I was grateful to have had the experience and being able to dance away in woodlands and fields is all we could have asked for!

Thanks for the dance Electric Woodlands. Until next time…!

As the late, great environmental philosopher John Muir once said: “The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” – If the universe was a good time and the forest wilderness being an intimate underground music event set deep in the lush green woodland of Grimsthorpe.

Last week we took ourselves on a two-hour journey from London, away from the hustle and bustle of fast-paced city life and escaped into the depths of Forbidden Forest. A festival with a devout following of foresters, all eager for a day and night of explicit electronic music consumption.

We had the pleasure of sharing in the first outing at their new home, after having moved from Wymeswold Forest in Loughborough, and we have to say we were really impressed.

© Photography by Haydon Perrior for Here & Now

A simple four-stage layout themed in all of its individual glory. From the Disco Express to the Reactor, the Rift to the Manor; each arena presented itself as an entirely standalone ecosystem. The first thing of highlighted mention has to be the lack of overspill of sound from stage to stage. The stages were relatively adjacent to each other, you could move freely between them with an absolutely fractional carrying of sound from one into the next. If it wasn’t already apparent that having a festival amongst natures natural oxygen tanks also comes with copious acoustic benefits, it was becoming quickly noticeable.

© Photography by Haydon Perrior for Here & Now

We have to also point out that there was an impressive amount of different installations. In terms of refreshments, amenities and merchandise, there was a lot to indulge in if you needed a breather from the high-intensity musical experience that enveloped you.

Moving onto the matter at hand, the music. Offering a wide range of sonics from disco to the almighty drums and house through to the hammering of robust techno, there isn’t really a vibe that exists that you couldn’t catch on-site at FF.

© Photography by Josh Hiatt for Here & Now

Their lineup programming showed some serious maturity in terms of educated and informed artist choices, perhaps maybe some adjustments would have been better suited in terms of set times but you have to take into account other commitments for artists; that is something that, unless you have had an involvement in event management or booking artists, you simply won’t be able to appreciate the level of potential frustration it can bring.

© Photography by Sophie Harbinson for Here & Now

We were really pleased to see the magnitude of different tiers of artists, too. FF is definitely to be advocated for their championing of up and coming artists as well as established power-punchers. Take for example Alisha, the lady of the moment in the tech house world rising at breakneck speeds due to a burgeoning level of talent and hunger, along with a great team around her. We have had the privilege of knowing and watching Alisha for a number of years and we are still always blown away by her performances. For someone at such a young age to be able to command a crowd with relative ease, just by being herself, now that really is something.

© Photography by Sophie Harbinson for Here & Now

There were a lot of respectively standout performances throughout the day – ABODE golden boy GW Harrison, PAX, Bibi b2b Skream, A.M.C., Turno, Flava D, Horse Meat Disco, Alan Fitzpatrick, Nicole Moudaber – We could honestly go on and on about it, looking back and quantifying it just makes it even more impressive in terms of big names. It could even be said that you are a real appreciator of many different genres then you will struggle to see everyone you want to see. Some people might take that as a negative, but we think that is an instrumental sign of a good festival.

© Photography by Matt Stephens for Here & Now

After a couple of years of dying to make our descent into the forest, we broke that abstinence with one hell of a show. You often visit festivals and bring an excessive amount of expectation with you, this can be because of the hype online both in chatter and visually, you then get there and it doesn’t live up to the anticipation. Well, that certainly didn’t happen, and we are glad that there isn’t too long to wait for the next edition of Forbidden Forest as their pre-sale and general admission has near enough sold out already… telling you all you need to know about what kind of experience is on offer.

© Photography by Sophie Harbinson for Here & Now

Top marks for a top day, taking the edge off the four-hour round trip in a pleasantly received fashion.

The post Reviewed: Playaz at Printworks appeared first on Data Transmission.

]]>
The idea of a Playaz Recordings takeover at Printworks was something of a dream until Saturday 10th March saw it become a reality. Playaz have gone from strength to strength over the last year following a number of sell-out shows and an array of releases and were ready to take Printworks by storm. A full fronted drum and bass line-up was what was expected but the Playaz crew didn’t disappoint when they threw the Crucast DJs into the mix. Adding some of the biggest names amongst the bassline scene to an array of some of the biggest drum and bass names was a recipe for madness. Coming through with an insane line-up, it was safe to say that we were certainly going to be in for one hell of a party.

We arrived at Printworks nice and early, about 1 o’clock, and got straight into the action. Wasting no time at all, we headed into the Press Halls for AMC and Turno who were on the decks and let’s just say it didn’t feel like the start of a rave. With Dreps and Phantom on the mics, the vibe in the place was ridiculous as AMC and Turno dropped their new stomper, ‘Turno & A.M.C – Alliance’. A proper floor smasher, really setting the tone for the day. Shelling out some serious hard hitters and rollers, their energy behind the decks was infectious. Pumping out a bunch of crowd pleasures like Turno’s remix of ‘Pasco – The Trick (Turno Remix)’, the duo was setting up nicely for Majistrate to takeover. Synonymous for his monstrous sets, there was no one better to take over after such an unbelievable start to the day. Shelling out some proper nit and grit, the kind of stuff to make absolutely anyone pull a screw face, the rave was really starting to take it up a notch as the venue filled. In combination with the new lighting setup, tracks like ‘Whiney ft. Inja – Flashlight’ and ‘Serum & Inja – Blow Them Away’ had everyone throwing their hardest skank.

It was time to amble on over to the Charge Bay, where a line-up of some of the best underground, up and coming bassline DJs and a few drum and bass heavyweights were ready to show just what they could do. One name who’s really been on the up recently is Zero who’s been no stranger to the bassline scene over the past few months. Throwing out one of his new ones ‘Zero – Checkmate’, Zero had picked up a good little crowd who were in awe of the second drop.

After a quick switch up of music, it was time to head back into the spotlight for a set that many would have been waiting for. A back to back consisting of Randall and Die who had taken over from the jump up crew and were firing out the minimal, gritty hitters. The roar of ‘Uncle22 & Navigator – Choose One (Serum Refix)’ echoed deep into the room as it was met by a roar of the crowd, proper heavy stuff. With some fine mixing and impeccable track selection, the two in control were dominating and showing everyone just how it’s done.

Time was swiftly moving on and before we knew it, it was time to push the drum and bass aside for a couple of hours and bring in the Crucast crew. After a number of sell out Crucast Showcase performances, Darkzy, Skepsis, Notion, Mr Virgo, Lazcru and Bru-C were taking centre stage of a sold-out Printworks. Playing for thirty minutes each, we were in store for a flurry of bassline as Skepsis took to the decks first. Kicking things off with an unheard VIP of his recent release ‘Skepsis – Fingers’, the bassline heavyweight set the place alight as gun fingers went up throughout the place. Shelling out the filth that everyone wanted, Skepsis cycled through an array of stompers before making way for Notion. Following in Skepsis’ footsteps, Notion kicked off his thirty minutes with a VIP of his own. A VIP of his recent crowd favourite, ‘Notion Ft Slick Don – Vex’. It was VIP after VIP for the bassline crew who were dropping some serious material. Up next was Mr Virgo aka Mr V, who let’s just say has proven to be one of the most influential and dominant figures in the underground scene. Bringing his experience to the show, Mr V dropped some absolute fire through his thirty minutes, playing tracks like ‘Mr Virgo – Jungle Frenzy’, Virgo had everyone throwing out their hardest skank. Taking over was none other than Darkzy, the Nottingham based selector brought the heat with a VIP of ‘Bru-C ft. Darkzy & Window Kid – Hide The Ting’ and a selection of fast-paced heavy hitters. Finishing things off for the Crucast boys was Lazcru, who jumped on and brought back the drum and bass with a quick thirty-minute set of crowd pleasers and teasers.

Stepping away from the bassline, Annix and Sub Zero took control in the Press Halls for an hour. If you’re into your drum & bass, you’ll know that these boys are certainly up there and never fail to put on a show. Causing some absolute damage to the main room, the boys behind the decks were tearing Printworks apart. Throwing out some ridiculously sounding tracks like ‘Neonlight – Microbots (Annix Remix) and ‘Sub Zero & Jaydan – Fear’, the boys had spirits at an all-time high for the day. Blasting through a monstrous collection of belters, these boys were proving just why they were on the line-up, the energy they had created in the venue was insane. Carrying on from these madmen were another set of heavyweights, Shadow Demon Coalition. Made up of Voltage, Bassman and Trigga these boys knew just what was needed to up the stakes, if it was even possible. Roller after roller, stomper after stomper, the switch up between tracks was second to none. Playing tunes such as ‘Voltage – Jungle Animal’ and then switching into tracks like ‘Serum & Voltage – Mission Control’, the place was bouncing.

Back to the Charge Bay we went. Having heard a lot about him and seeing a lot of clips of his sets, we thought it would be crazy to miss out on Sammy Virji. Picking up a name for himself in the bassline scene, Virji has been quite the one to watch recently. Known for his ecstatic energy behind the decks, everyone who has been to one of his sets knows just what kind of show to expect. Playing a whole host of his own productions and remixes, Virji had the whole of the Charge Bay packed out. Dishing out filth like ‘Sammy Virji – Never Let You Go’, Virji had everyone throwing their biggest garage skank. Quick steppers and heavy hitters, the perfect switch up from a heavily dominated drum and bass day.

Moving on quickly, we were back in the Press Halls for a truly special set. SASASAS took to the decks, kicking things off with an incredibly passionate and emotion tribute to the late MC Stormin. The love of drum and bass brought everyone together for a moment of reflection and respect as the SASASAS boys exploded into their set. The famous SASASAS lyrics echoed through the halls as tracks like ‘Macky Gee – Tour’ had everyone, and I mean everyone, chanting out the melody. A proper crowd favourite, you must have been living under a rock if you haven’t heard it in a rave recently.

Finishing things off for us in the Press Halls was none other than the head honcho himself DJ Hype. Playing a much-loved back to back with DJ Hazard, these two were the perfect pairing to finish up a truly special Playaz party. Hype is known for his wizardy skills on the decks and he wasn’t shy of showing off. Scratching through a selection of tracks, re-fixing them as he went, the Playaz bossman was doing just what we all wanted. The perfect way to end close up what had been a ridiculously good event, everyone about the place was loving life and it’s safe to say that Printworks did it justice.

After smashing their first festival last year, there was no doubt going to be another one and Saturday 23rd September saw Hospital Records bring the bass back to Finsbury Park for another day of heavy drum and bass loving raving.

Having seen them smash it at Boomtown 2017, there was no better place to start then in the Invaderz tent for Kings Of The Rollers. The setting may not have compared much to the huge stage of Sector 6 but take nothing away from the set, roller after roller there was enough in there to bring everyones bass face out and heavy rollers such as ‘Serum – The Finger’ and “Bladerunner – Jungle Jungle’ did just that. Taking over after that set was certainly going to be a task but the follow up couldn’t have been any better. TNA, made up of Nu Elementz, Turno, Azza and Grima took to the decks for a very special set in tribute to the late DJ Dominator. The atmosphere in the tent was electric as the set was kicked off with the well known remix of ‘Ready or Not’ by Dominator and Logan D.

It was time to have a break from the head banging beat of jump up and take a wonder over to the Med School Warehouse, a gritty squat rave type building which towered over the festival, for the last remaining half an hour of Alix Perez’ set. If you’re into your dark heavy and I mean heavy rhythmic DnB then this was the set for you. The setting was perfect, pitch black, apart from the glow of the stage, and a serious sound system. Perez has the place booming with his new one ‘Nighthawks’, the harmonic build up topped off with the perfect drop had the crowd in complete trance.

Where to next? With so many arenas and so many stella acts it was hard to decide but the Let It Roll stage was screaming out for some attention as Neurofunk heavyweight Audio took to the decks. Move further into the spectrum of DnB and you find yourself listening to Neurofunk, an extremely dark and hard hitting style of music which has had quite some attention over the years. Not from experience but from videos and photos I get the feeling that the Let It Roll stage was a pretty good miniature version of the Czech Republic based festival. The strange looking robot figures plotted around the stage with a huge monster like head behind the DJ really added to the vibe of the music.

Once again it was time to move on for another experience. Plotted around near the food stall areas was a little stage called The Incubator. When I say little I mean little, it was literally a caravan like vehicle with enough room for three people inside and although the speakers didn’t do the music any justice it was another quirky and clever stage packed with some heavy rollers and the occasional liquid track.

Time moved on ever so quickly bringing the festival to its final acts. We found ourselves on stage for My Nu Leng who took charge of closing the FabricLive tent and it was certainly one hell of a way to close up a great day. You never know what you’re going to get with My Nu Leng these days, a full fronted bassline set or an absolute belter of a DnB set but they seriously didn’t disappoint. Starting off with the bassline festival hit ‘Chris Lorenzo & Zinc – Gammy Elbow’ giving the crowd something to skank about to. It was a great way to start the set, it gave everyone a little break from the DnB and allowed them to dance about a bit. But as expected the set slowly grew into a seriously heavy DnB My Nu Leng special. The combination of classic jungle tracks with some fresh jump up from the likes of Mackey Gee really set the place alight, the energy in the tent was unmatched as Dread MC hyped the crowd from front to back. A set with a bit of something for everyone, sends them home satisfied.

As the final beat of the plethora of DnB boomed out of the speakers it was time to call it day and without a doubt, it was certainly a day which exceeded all expectations. Two smash hit festivals in a row for the Hospital Records boys making it a must go to for any DnB lover.
