After a massive set at Rampage this summer, Belgian Drum & Bass maestro Basstripper has officially dropped his crowd-favourite banger, ‘Time To Go.’ This track has already been shaking sound systems around the globe all year and is quickly becoming a staple in the scene.

Basstripper, known off-stage as Jeroen Stevens, has been steadily climbing the ranks in the Drum & Bass world. Hailing from Leuven, Belgium, he’s made a name for himself with his relentless energy and cutting-edge productions. Basstripper initially started as a DJ, honing his craft in the underground scenes of Belgium, before stepping into production, where he truly began to shine.

‘Time To Go’ is a prime example of Basstripper’s signature style, blending unique soundscapes with powerful basslines that hit hard. It’s no wonder this track has gained so much support—it follows in the footsteps of his previous hits, like last summer’s viral sensation, ‘In The City’, which solidified him as a key player in the contemporary bass music scene.

Basstripper’s rise hasn’t been by chance. His dedication to the craft is evident in every release, and his relentless work ethic has led him to collaborate with some of the biggest names in the industry. Over the years, he’s shared the stage with heavyweights like Andy C, Wilkinson, and Sub Focus, and his sets are known for their high energy and seamless mixing, often leaving crowds in awe.

Basstripper’s been on a roll, supporting big names like Bou and B-Live during their Australian tour last November. He’s also been flexing his remix skills, reworking Netsky’s ‘Hell in High Heels’ at the end of 2023, and more recently, dropping a remix of Friction’s ‘Supersonic’ this January. His DNB Allstars release, ‘Hazmat / Deserted,’ is still making waves on the DJ circuit, further proving his ability to craft tracks that are in high demand.

Beyond his work behind the decks and in the studio, Basstripper is also deeply connected to the community. He’s been an advocate for the local scene in Belgium, often mentoring up-and-coming producers and DJs, helping to foster the next generation of talent.

‘Time To Go’ perfectly encapsulates Basstripper’s fresh, lively sound, featuring drilling basslines, crisp snares, and tight drum programming. The track’s powerful breaks and twisted synths are engineered for maximum dancefloor impact, while the edgy vocals add just the right amount of attitude.

With this latest release, Basstripper continues to push boundaries, and it’s clear he’s just getting started. Expect more fire from him in the near future—this is only the beginning. Keep an eye out for his upcoming projects, as he’s set to leave an even bigger mark on the global drum and bass landscape.

It’s the end of July and British festival season is well and truly underway. The nights are light, the days are long and the youth of the UK wait in anticipation for the highlights of their year. Early summer festivals like Love Saves the Day and Forbidden Forest have whet the appetite and filled Instagram feeds with summer-raving content, but the biggest are yet to come. Every year, Boomtown, Creamfields and Reading & Leeds festivals mark the most important dates in thousands of British ravers’ calendars. But Drum & Bass fever is by no means unique to the United Kingdom. It’s no secret that Central Europe, Australia and New Zealand share our love for the genre, with well-established culture, production and events but, this year more than ever, it’s clear that Drum & Bass is going truly global.

Until recently, if you’d heard of Drum & Bass being played overseas, it would be relatively safe to assume that it would be in one of two regions: Central Europe or Australasia. These two parts of the world have longstanding reputations when it comes to Drum & Bass. The Czech Republic, for example, hosts arguably the biggest DnB-specific festival in the world in Let It Roll, whose star-studded line-up has lived up to expectations every year for nearly a decade. Belgium and the Netherlands also have a history with Drum & Bass, with the former playing host to the highly respected Rampage festival, and the latter the home to the Liquicity label and festival. Australia, home of legendary group Pendulum, is a recognised Southern Hemisphere hub for the genre, but Aotearoa (New Zealand) is probably a more established stronghold. Here, it’s so popular it’s virtually mainstream. Turn on George FM at any time of the day and you can find Drum & Bass on the radio almost 24/7.

But more recently, we’re starting to see a wider variety of venues play host to Drum & Bass. Certainly, in Europe, you can find regular events in France, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia and Germany organised by Get in Step, Hospitality and Liquicity. DnB Allstars recently hosted a festival in Portugal, having staged a similar event in Spain in 2022, while Croatia’s week-long Hospitality on the Beach has become a bucket-list event for ravers since launching in 2018. While both impressive and encouraging, expansion within Europe is far from surprising. Most recently, DJs have been breaking new ground outside the continent, performing in fascinating venues in Asia and large-scale events in the United States.

Take the middle weekend in June, for example. Drum & Bass was being played simultaneously across three separate continents, by some of the most recognisable names in the genre. On Saturday 15th June 2024, while Chase & Status were performing on the shores of Lake Como (Italy) at Nameless Festival, the Hospitality trio of Whiney, Degs and Anaïs were playing the final date of their Australia, New Zealand and Asia tour in Bangkok (Thailand); Grafix was headlining a club night in Pheonix, Arizona (USA); and S.P.Y, Fred V and London Elektricity were in Bali (Indonesia) for Locus Festival. You might dismiss this as a coincidence, but it’s really an insightful illustration of the global expansion of Drum & Bass over the last few years. And it’s by no means a one-off. This year, Asia has been well catered for by the Hospitality tour, with dates in Singapore and Seoul in the middle of May and four consecutive dates for India in June, with Whiney, Degs and Anaïs stopping off at New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

But the region that has attracted the most attention in terms of its growing interest in Drum & Bass is the USA. Until recently, received wisdom was that Drum & Bass was a British phenomenon, unsuited to American culture. British and American definitions of raves were seen to be incompatible. But those attempting to export the genre across the Atlantic refused to be obstructed. The most well-known example is the Worship group, made up of genre leaders Dimension, Sub Focus, Culture Shock and 1991. These four have spoken publicly about the frustrations of “half-empty clubs” in America and, in 2020, set out to conquer the American market once and for all. Since then, they have completed three North American tours, which have made an undeniable impact. Just this year, festivals across the States have featured these and other well-known Drum & Bass DJs, attracting healthy crowds. Chase & Status, Hedex, Bou and Andy C were booked for Ultra Miami in March, Kenya Grace represented the scene at Coachella in April and Delta Heavy, K Motionz and Mefjus played at Orlando’s Forbidden Kingdom at the start of June. The pinnacle of US growth, however, undeniably came as the Worship quartet played a closing hour-and-a-half set to 30,000 American ravers at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas in May of this year.

The majority of the artists cited in these international events are British. Perhaps that’s not a surprise given that the UK is the birthplace of the genre. It’s undeniable that Drum & Bass has been a resounding success as a cultural export. But for this popularity to be more than a flash in the pan, it’s necessary for local DJs to perpetuate interest in their various regions. Fortunately, there are numerous examples of DJs from around the world who are carrying the torch internationally. Again, Europe provides a plethora of recognisable names: Austria’s Camo & Krooked, the Netherlands’ Andromedik, Belgium’s Netsky, Russia’s Synergy and France’s The Caracal Project. Aotearoa (New Zealand) has produced top artists like Lee Mvtthews and Elipsa, as well as young talents like Rova; while Australia boast Pendulum, Ekko & Sidetrack, ShockOne and Luude among their products. Excitingly, recognised producers can now also be found in Asia, like Sri Lanka’s IYRE or Japan’s Makoto. And perhaps most encouraging of all, American artists, some of whom began producing long before the boom in the US, can now reap the rewards of their hard work. Justin Hawkes, Bensley and Kumarion serve as good examples, having formed a group under the notably apt name ‘Carry the Fire‘. On the very same night in June that Drum & Bass events took place in Bangkok, Lake Como and Bali, this trio played in Denver for their seventh event of their 21-date North America tour.

The global spread of Drum & Bass is clear for all to see. In 2024, the genre has touched all corners of the world and it ought to be no surprise. Even within the UK, we’ve seen the genre explode in popularity, bringing it into contact with mainstream culture. While it is impossible to predict such a volatile thing as popularity, particularly in the case of dance music, where trends come and go before anyone has time to notice, all the signs over the last few years are very encouraging. While Drum & Bass has emerged as a force capable of contending with the established favourites of House and Techno at home, the same can now, very much be said, around the world.

Josh White and Matt Lowe aka Hybrid Minds have been a consistently important part of the Drum & Bass scene. Their stunning soundscapes and melodic instrumentals soon became a signature sound and have gained recognition all across the planet.

Hybrid Minds work from their own studios where the duo create unique music, from liquid to dancefloor fillers. The pair has had such a remarkable year with music and have made insane movements, including some of 2020s most anticipated collaborations and releases for the Drum & Bass scene. With so much news and exciting things coming their way, we had the incredible opportunity of chatting to Josh, 50% of the men behind the magic, about it all.

Pleasure to speak to you! I’ve been a huge fan of yours for a while now and it has been incredible following the Hybrid Minds journey. How have you been finding things as artists in these strange times?

The initial thing we’ve taken from it all is making music, before we were struggling to find time to focus on that. Missing out on the shows earlier in the year and in summer was a shame but it gave more time to reflect and make more music which is important to us. It’s easy to lose the time to focus on the creative process and lockdown was a good opportunity to get that time back.

It can be difficult making music and working without seeing the response of the crowd from events so we really miss the crowds, their reactions and playing out, because that’s essentially where the music ends up and that is a big part of its purpose so missing that has been a bit weird.

Do you think lockdown has affected the industry in that way? Where a lot of producers are feeling stuck or finding that it’s difficult to know how the crowd will react to the music they make?

Yeah I think especially for people that make the heavier stuff and the Drum & Bass that is pretty much exclusively made for listening to in a club. I feel like those people have had a real testing time of knowing whether they should be even releasing that music or waiting until the clubs are open and release it then. Then the worry of when will that happen and am I just not going to release any music for a year or so, so it’s probably been quite hard for those people.

Luckily we have always focused, as well as the clubs, upon people listening at home and people just listening to the music, so in that sense, I think we’re quite lucky that we have still been able to crack on with releasing music but for the dance floor stuff it must be so hard because you can’t exactly get a vibe off a comment section on Facebook.

I can imagine its a peculiar time, completely unprecedented! But, speaking of events, the Printworks night Hybrid Minds were going to do earlier in the year looked incredible, I know I was excited to see it. I’m sure you guys felt the same that was a shame to see that as one of the events that had to be put on hold?

Yeah, it was a case of bad timing really because I think everything went into lockdown the week before we were supposed to do it and it was going to be the big pay off for our work. It was the biggest event we’ve ever done in our favourite club, the club felt right for that event and we were really looking forward to it and it was real bad timing. We had loads of stuff planned for it but that will eventually happen and in hindsight, now we’ve taken it to the O2 Academy, it has a bigger capacity, a bigger venue, so it’s going to help in the long run. Everything will be that much better and bigger, but it did come at such a bad time because we really worked hard and were ready for putting everything towards that show, so it was a bit of a kick in the teeth. A lot of pressure was taken off – we could stop worrying about it because we didn’t have to do it yet.

With our other shows, same as everyone else, everything we had planned is being rescheduled and anything that wont happen this year will get postponed, same as everyone else, it’s hard to make plans at the moment.

I’m looking forward to seeing events start up again. Let’s hope it’s not too far in the future. Another recent thing I’ve seen you involved in is being announced as the Monday night hosts for KISS FM which is incredible to hear. When does that happen and what kind of vision do you have for the show?

Yeah, it’s another silver lining to the lockdown because its something I don’t think we would have been able to find the time for previously but now everything’s changed its actually been a really good way of getting us to go through music, listen to music, and get inspiration or getting excited about music in Drum & Bass because without gigs there’s not as much need to go through promos and stay on top of that stuff, so it’s been really good for that. Our plan for it was that we’re going to have some guest mixes from our friends or people that we like and just keep playing music that we love, every Monday and keep going with it. It’s a nice lockdown job.

I know I can speak for myself and others when I say I’m glad some good Drum & Bass will be blessing our airwaves!

Yeah! It’s quite exciting for it not to be in the middle of the night, it’s interesting and we want to play music for everyone that’s into the scene but we also want to try and show people that are driving in their car, or that might not necessarily be into Drum & Bass, what is this all about and play some nice accessible music for them as well as playing all the underground heavy stuff. A lot of people say that their parents like us and that we are quite accessible Drum & Bass, so hopefully can get some people into it.

I think it will definitely bring a bigger audience to Drum & Bass, get them dancing around their kitchens on a Monday. I know I remember listening to pirate radio as a kid and tuning into Drum & Bass. Do you think that part of the culture influenced you today?

Yeah, you know everyone when they start DJing ends up on some kind of radio site or something and it is that sort of routine and that fun element of just listening to music or playing music that’s liked and sharing that with people that you don’t know. You don’t know who they are or where their listening from that sort of stuff is quite exciting and it’s a really fun process.

Incredible being able to bring people together with music. So working with a producer like Netsky must have been an insane experience. I really like the new single. It’s perfect for lockdown and 2020 generally, especially the lyrics. Did you move in that direction intentionally?

We have wanted to make a tune with Netsky for ages, since the day we got into Drum & Bass and when he first came about he had this really exciting sound so we’ve looked up to him in that regard since then. To do a track with him was just really exciting for us. Something we never thought we would be doing and now it’s become a norm almost… it’s quite crazy.

Was he always on your list of people you’ve wanted to work with?

Absolutely, he has such a predominant sound that he is well known for and rightly so, that Hospital Records sound that he came with in the first place is the perfect balance of accessible, commercial, liquid and still keeping all its integrity attached as well. That’s something we’ve always looked up to, so that was a really good moment and to get on this album which is a nod towards where his sound came from was a really nice experience.

Do you have any other dream producers you want to work with?

Yeah we’ve started a track with Pendulum which is going to be released next year, which is again one of the acts who got us into Drum & Bass, as I’m sure they did a lot of other people, so to be working with them is a bit nuts…they’re like hero status. To be one of the few collaborations they’ve done is…yeah I can’t quite understand it….I’m all for it. I really like how that track is turning out.

When I heard it previewed on Fort live stream it sounded incredible and seemed to have a great audience response…

They played it on there yeah, it’s not quite finished yet, but the response was just insane, we were watching in the comments and it was really exciting. We can’t wait to get that out next year. When you do a collaboration with someone like that you don’t know if people want that person to be heading in your direction or working with you, because they have such a die hard fan base, so to see their fan base happy about it was a relief and now we’re just excited to get it out.

It’s an insane track and I’m really excited to hear the finished piece. Could you tell me about your involvement in the 20 years of Anjuna compilation remixing a single from Above & Beyond?

Yeah we’ve been big fans of Above & Beyond for ages and admire how far they’ve come with an underground sound without mad radio plays and it’s such a well respected label so it’s brilliant to do a remix for them. Anyone that likes us is always good news and when it’s people of that stature it’s very welcome! The remix went through a few different versions and we felt that it had the right balance and now we’re happy where it is, so that’s going be out in December.

Really exciting movements for you guys. I couldn’t chat to you without talking about the huge and almost sold out Brixton Academy show, you must be buzzing! How do you prepare for a show like that?

So that’s essentially the Printworks night which has evolved to this event, and we haven’t done a headline show on that scale yet. We’ve done some in our ‘Outline Tour’ and they were good and helped us get ready for this kind of show, but I don’t know how we will get ready for that kind of show apart from spending a lot of time on it until we’re at a place that we’re comfortable that we’re not going to f*ck it all up. You just sort of forget about all the worrying stuff, that all disappears on the night, and then you forget about it and take it in after its happened I suppose…worry about it until it happens, then you black out, then you wake up after it’s finished.

Sometimes nerves do kick in, it’s rare for us now and unexpected but it’s usually if you’re playing to a crowd where the artist before you has played something different. Last summer we were worried about playing after someone who may have been heavier or a different genre, you worry that you will press play people will leave the tent, but last summer that didn’t happen so we started to get more confident about it. So that’s the main place nerves come from for us.

If you stop caring that you’ll mess up then you have nothing to worry about and that’s the sort of mentality that I take into gigs and help me stay calm about it.

I know every time I’ve seen you it’s seemed incredible from my perspective!

Haha adding on the pressure for next time!

I hope to be in one of your crowds watching soon! Have you had a favourite venue to play in or performance that you’ve done that highlight for you?

Every time I’m asked that, me and Matt both pretty much say those headlines show we do in London or festivals in New Zealand. It’s when you go there for the first time and see how big the Drum & Bass scene is. It’s something that sticks with every Drum & Bass producer that’s been there, it’s just a really weird experience to see music from the UK that big all the way over the other side of the planet. To go out there in the middle of our winter which is the middle of their summer festival season, it’s a really good experience. It’s a great trip.

Quick fire questions!

Favorite producers?

That’s a hard one…production value Camo & Krooked, we look up to them constantly for their genius technical ability.

Favourite track?

Not really, we’re taking in so much music because of the Kiss show that there’s so much stuff we like it’s hard to pinpoint something at the moment where we have to listen to so much music and not pinpoint one track in particular.

Go to shower song?

I don’t know….maybe i need to get one!

Any tips for producers in lockdown for motivation?

I suppose spend as much time as you can in the studio and if nothing is working don’t be too hard on yourself. Take a walk or whatever, do something else.

We’ve been finding this as well you can work yourself into a hole and if something isn’t coming out of it then it’s best to take a break, step away from something even for a few days and come back when you’re feeling more inspired to work on it.  Try to work smart basically and spend as much time as you can in the studio but if it’s not been productive and it’s making you angry then, stop.

Thanks so much, it’s been great to speak with you and it’s really exciting to hear all the big things you’ve got going on, I can’t wait to hear the Pendulum song and tune in regularly with your Kiss FM shows on Mondays!

Hybrid Minds latest track ‘Let Me Hold You’ with Netsky is out now, check it out below! Make sure you tune into Hybrid Minds Kiss FM show every Monday night from 9pm!

In a time of great despair for not only the music community but the entire world, this morning Hospital Records provided a message of positivity by revealing Netsky will be returning to the music label to work on a brand new project. Marking a decade since he left the label to pursue other music ambitions, Hospital’s announcement of Netsky’s return represents a moment drum and bass fans across the world have dreamt of over the past ten years. This Friday will see Netsky burst back onto the scene with his first solo D&B record in five years…’I See The Future In Your Eyes’.

Now one of the biggest names in dance music, Netsky first won the hearts of the D&B community with his historic ‘Memory Lane’ in 2010, and throughout the years continued to excel himself with the release of two LPs on Hospital and a string of acclaimed tracks including ‘I Refuse’, ‘Secret Agent’, ‘Give & Take’, ‘Iron Heart’ and ‘Come Alive’. On top of this, Netsky released his third album in 2016 and cemented his name as a global icon with the tour of his ground-breaking live show, alongside performing headline slots at festivals including Tomorrowland, Let It Roll, SW4 and Ultra Music Festival.

But now it’s time to look to the future as Netsky has big plans starting with the release of a new D&B single reminiscent of the original Netsky sound we all fell in love with.

“10 years ago, Hospital Records gave me an opportunity that changed my life and released my first album. In that 10 years I’ve been lucky enough to release 2 more albums, many singles and EP’s and toured all over the world. I’ve been blessed to work with amazing artists, producers and writers and experiment with different genres and influences. Over the last year I have found myself naturally coming back to producing Drum & Bass, and made perfect sense to me to release it with the label where it all began back in 2010. I can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on, and I’m excited to kick it all off with this single”. – Netsky

Netsky’s ambition to return home to Hospital Records has been met by a wave of excitement and anticipation from the label, who are welcoming him back with open arms.

“I’m delighted to be working on a brand new record with Netsky, especially in the 10 year anniversary of his Hospital debut. Boris has always been family to us, and his music is a special feature of our (almost) 25 year long catalogue… we can’t wait to unveil his brand new drum & bass in the coming months.” – Chris Goss (Co-founder of Hospital)

August Bank Holiday weekend, the notoriously wet weekend usually has the country covered in a downpour. But that doesn’t stop thousands of dedicated ravers and music lovers, travelling the length of the UK, donning their wellies and glitter, just to see their beloved DJ’s, as the country becomes awash with festival fever. It’s that one last long weekend and the perfect chance to bow out of your summer antics. For myself, I had the pure pleasure of attending Clapham Common for the 15th birthday celebration of South West Four.

Arriving at our hotel a day in advance to enjoy what the capital has to offer, our attention quickly turns to the weekend ahead and usual ‘Must See’ debate for the weekend ahead. Top of our agenda as ever, the incomparable Chase & Status on Sunday and the hope of catching some awesome Grime acts in-between.

Situated on the historic Clapham Common, in the heart of London, SW4 is easily accessible via the tube. Our hotel at Hyde Park is only 9 stops away and with each passing station the tube gets busier, the energy grows and the pre-festival buzz is in full motion. Large groups pile out of the station, piling into each other as they try and get their bearings to locate the festival. Thankfully, everything is clearly signposted and staff are already on hand to point revellers in the right direction. After the usual security checks and collecting our set times for the weekend, we do the inevitable and head to the bar.

SW4 is laid out as you’d expect, the main stage takes the centre, surrounded by it’s supporting cast of tents, food vans and bars. Acts are already performing and crowds gather in anticipation. As we arrive at the bar I’m astonished to see that it has the facility to pay by card. This is a festival first for me and what is both a blessing and a curse. No more 45-minute queues at the cash point, but both bank balance and liver could take a serious hit.

We quickly move on to catch some music, firstly heading over to the Indoor Main Stage to catch Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. I first saw the Dutch duo a year ago to the day. So what better way to celebrate that anniversary than with another visit. As the crowd begins to grow, the lads deliver a flawless set of progressive house that gets the weekend off to a flyer.

Shortly after we tent hop before settling at the Main stage for the unexpected highlight of my weekend when Grime pioneer, Dizzee Rascal takes to the stage. The Londoner arrives at the stage to the sound of Big Ben as goosebumps rush over my body. I was a huge fan years ago, but that has fizzled out as I grew and my music taste changed. But that feeling of nostalgia is one you can never control or beat. I found myself in ore and singing along to every word of ‘Fix Up, Look Sharp’ like I’d been a super fan for years. A truly unforgettable festival moment.

We have some downtime and stock up on food and drink. The queues are all short, staff incredibly friendly and the food is incredible. It’s the festival that seems to keep on giving. As the night draws in, the magic of the festivals happens. The whole place transforms into a ravers wonderland. Next on our hit-list are 3 DJ’s taking to the stage as one, Netsky B2B Jauz B2B Slushii. The set had so much energy, you couldn’t help but be transfixed as we moved closer to the front. We were literally being drawn in. The trio interact with the crowd, having selfies and even taking to standing on the decks. Their silhouettes were strangely reminiscent of 3 famous Swedish DJ’s.

Elsewhere across the festival at the Indoor Main Stage is Galantis. Without even easing you in, they fire high tempo tunes at the huge crowd they have pulled in. As the first day comes to a close, with Marshmello closing the Main Stage, we make our way back to our hotel. Once again the helpful staff are on hand to direct the right way. Day 1 done and we are incredibly impressed.

Day 2 arrives and so does the rain. It doesn’t dampen spirits, I always say it’s a true sign of a true festival goer if they’re prepared to face the adverse weather. Thankfully it seems the crowd is of the same opinion and everyone is in great spirits. The second day continues from where day 1 left off.

The Main Stage is alive with the heavy beats from My Nu Leng igniting a raucous crowd, while the indoor stage has the legend of Roger Sanchez B2B with Ibiza locals The Mambo Brothers. It’s also a time for the Grime acts to show what they can do, with Bugzy Malone and Lethal Bizzle adding to an already diverse line-up.

The day belongs to Chase & Status though. Back and celebrating their 15 years together, they deliver a set of the highest order. Delivering a mix of new and old classics, the duo along with the ever imposing MC Rage dominating the stage. The whole weekend has built to this moment as always the guys do what they have done for so many years. It brings to a close an unforgettable weekend.

I have had the privilege of being able to attend many festivals across the UK and Europe and I can safely say that there are not many that can compare to the incredibly impressive SW4. The whole weekend flowed without any problems. The line up had all the hallmarks of being incredible and it duly delivered. Not a queue in sight, staff willing to help, a line up to rival the best in the country and all acts hitting you with some of their best sets of the season. What better way to finish an unforgettable summer?!
