Saturday – Reviewed by Grant Richards

Having attended South West Four for at least 1 of the 2 days over the past ten years, I was wondering how I could tackle my review of this year’s Saturday event and hopefully come up with something different, or at least a different take on it from my perspective? Let’s be frank here, SW4 is as much of a mainstay for the August Bank Holiday weekend as the Notting Hill Carnival, so much has been said and written about it, however, I’ll attempt to review my day as I’m not gonna front, I had fun!

I was attending this year with my girlfriend and two of her best pals, one of whom was keen on catching Tinie Tempah on the main stage, who was due on at 3pm apparently. I didn’t let on at this point that I was more than happy to catch TT (or Patrick to his Mum), as I’m quite the fan myself. To quote a classic lyric “Haters I can’t F##king hear you, reception”.

We got there nice and early and wandered over to the main stage and was greeted by what I can only describe as the dance music festival equivalent of a naff wedding set. I’m not going to say who it was playing, but there isn’t much need for Show Me Love so early on, there’s ZERO need for Venga Boys and the Oggie Oggie Oggie mic chants can most certainly DO ONE. That laughable set was a great opportunity for a quick wander round to see what tents were where?

From memory, there were 3 tents in addition to the main stage last year and 4 this year, with the addition of what was a mainly Tropical House artist tent, hosted by bloggers turned label, Selected, and headlined by Robin Schulz and Jonas Blue.

We had a quick go on the waltzer, as you do, and wandered back to the main stage where lo and behold Low Steppa was playing back to back with Sonny Fodera, who I’m sure was wearing a vintage Arsenal away shirt?  They looked like they were having a whale of a time, it may have been a huge stage and an ever increasing crowd but it could’ve easily been some after party back at one of their gaffs, they seemed that relaxed. Mid set we heard Camelphat’s tune of the summer ‘Cola’ for the first time of many that day.

I won’t dwell on Tinie Tempah too much, if you’ve caught him live over the years, or even seen him ‘live’ on TV you know the energy the guy brings, but let’s just say that the big foam thumb I had brought along for some fun and to rate who I was seeing, was firmly staying upturned.

We wandered past the Selected tent where Don Diablo was playing the polar opposite to Tropical House and to a packed tent too. The Ants tent wasn’t too packed and no one was fancying a slice of techno at this point in my group, so we kept on moving. On our travels we kept seeing different girls in Shania Twain ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ type outfits (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, please Google it, no seriously check it out) I’m not sure if this has been a thing all Summer or what? but if so, fair play, it’s a strong look.

Last year my fav arena was the D&B tent, but this year it was so packed when we went past, we gave it a miss. If you looked at the calibre of the line up – Netsky, Camo & Krooked, High Contrast, Goldie, Fabio & Grooverider and more – you’d understand why it was so rammo. Our loss on this occasion, no doubt.

An act that we did see last year in the D&B tent, Wilkinson, was performing a live set on the main stage, which I felt set the tone nicely for Sigma and the headliners for the Saturday, Pendulum. After catching the end of Wilkinson it was back to the Selected tent as my girlfriend was rather keen on seeing Kungs, as she had really enjoyed his recent album. Kungs set was more Future House than Tropical House (both genre names grind my gears somewhat) but musically it was high energy, unfortunately laden with some ‘Whoomp There It Is’ chants and when he dropped his trumpet laden hit of last Summer and the place went nuts.

I managed to get the girls to swing past MKs tent to actually catch him play for a bit and his tent was just as packed as the D&B arena. The thing is with MK is if you’ve seen him play once, you’ve seen him a hundred times, so I made the executive decision to go and catch Marshmello on the main stage, mainly to see what the fuss was all about?

I can’t help but scoff at anyone bouncing about on stage with what looks like an upturned white dustbin with eyes and a mouth, on their head. I realise Daft Punk wear helmets and they’re considered cool AF, but how many pictures have you seen of Daft Punk without their helmets on? Exactly, they use them to create an air of mystery. You can Google pics of Marshmello (whilst looking for Shania Twain) without his dustbin on, easily. It’s simply a gimmick. But what of his music and production? It sure had a huge crowd entertained, with plenty of ‘Put your hands up’ prompts whilst chopping through pretty grim EDM. Out came the ‘Whoomp there is’ chants once more and I realised that this is what I should actually expect, bearing in mind the main stage was in fact sponsored by Capital FM, those huge supporters of cool dance music. Foam thumb turned down.

Before the day was out we caught Sigma, who really are great live with their double drummers and myriad of hits you can sing along to, beyond just ‘Nobody To Love’, although that, rather unsurprisingly, received the best reaction to any single track on the day, that I saw and would’ve received a huge foam thumbs up, if it hadn’t been pinched a little earlier.

We stayed for half of Pendulum’s set before heading off before the rush, to my fav pub away from the Clapham High Street madness, to have a few more for the road and discuss the fun of the day including the hot topics of…a) When will ‘Whoomp There It Is’ die a slow miserable death? And b) Is Shania Twain now a fashion icon??

Baltimore, known for bmore club, bmore house, or simply bmore. Bmore is described as hip hop infused with chopped, staccato house music and was first created in the late 1980’s by 2 Live Crew’s Luther Campbell, Frank Ski, Big Tony, Scottie B, and DJ Spen. A form of breakbeats and based on a 8/4 beat structure, Bmore club developed a cult following in the early 1990s throughout the North Jersey club scene. This paved way for trap, ghetto house, and ghetto tech of today.

For 14 years, Baltimore had Starscape Festival held by Steez Promo. A haven for electronic dance music connoisseurs, Starscape featured drum and bass, electro, dubstep, and even jam bands. The one day festival was held every year from 1999 to 2012 at Fort Armistead Park and went from early afternoon to early morning. In 2012, Starscape featured artists such as Wolfgang Gartner, Sphongle, Flux Pavillion, Dada Life, Zedd, Conspirator, Dillon Francis, and many more.

For 2 years, Steez Promo was unable to acquire permits to host such a massive event and then in 2014 they came back with Moonrise Festival. In 2014, Moonrise featured acts such as Kaskade, Adventure Club, Lotus, Zeds Dead, Sander Van Doorn, and many many more!

This year, Steez returns along with Glow DC to bring forth a magnificent bass-laden line-up at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, August 8th and Sunday, August 9th. Moonrise this year will feature Bassnectar, Above & Beyond, Big Gigantic, Datsik, Dillon Francis, Knife Party, Die Antwoord, The Glitch Mob, Porter Robinson (Live), Zeds Dead, Bakermat, Thomas Jack, and many more!

SW4 Festival, Clapham Common – London https://datatransmission.co/blog/sw4-festival-clapham-common-london/ https://datatransmission.co/blog/sw4-festival-clapham-common-london/#respond Fri, 04 Oct 2013 14:24:00 +0000 http://datatrans.wpengine.com/news/sw4-festival-clapham-common-london/ It’s been 10 years since SW4 first graced the festival circuit to offer Londoner’s something different to the dirge of indie and pop festivals that littered the capitals musical landscape. This year the August bank holiday was again dominated by some of the biggest names in electronic music as the organizers looked to top the previous years efforts when a sold out Clapham Common hosted an array of exceptional talent such as Chase & Status, Skrillex, Carl Cox, Public Enemy, Knife Party, Erick Morillo, Paul van Dyk, Eric Prydz and 2 Many DJs to name but a few. Not ones to rest on their laurels this year delivered a similar caliber of artist as a plethora of big names made their way to South London for the festivals 10th anniversary. So with big expectations, we headed over to check out the 10th edition of what Carl Cox dubbed the “Crowning Glory” of London’s clubbing calendar.

Location, site and the weather

Pain us as it might to admit it but London, even during the summer is hardly St. Tropez in the weather stakes. Even the city that has everything can’t control mother nature as we found out during the Saturday as despite forecasts all week suggesting that we’d be soaking up the rays on Clapham Common by Friday the outlook had become decidedly bleak on the weather front as rain was predicted for the whole weekend. And rain it did, god awful torrential rain of biblical proportions bucketed down on festival goers from four o’clock onwards leading some to wonder whether or not we should dispense with the raincoats and start gathering animals in pairs. I’m pleased to report that in no way, shape or form did this unpleasant weather dampen the crowds spirits as people bolted to see the vast array of talent playing in the many tents dotted around the festival site.

Getting to and from the festival site was an easy enough proposition with regular trains running from across London to Clapham across the course of the weekend. Clapham’s various underground stations are all only a short walk to the from the site so once in the capital one could get to SW4 with a minimum of fuss. Equally hassle-free was our entrance onto the site itself with courteous staff keeping the queue moving and after a quick search getting people through the gates in record time. Having been operating on this site for ten years now as you can imagine the layout was well laid out and whilst perhaps not as large as the stellar line up would suggest, further inspection quickly reveals the sheer scale of the assembly on show with several large tents housing the majority of the programming; all of which were less than a stones throw away from each other. This without compromising sound quality, (as the was no cross-pollination of sounds across stages) allowed for easy access to catch a variety of sets by different artists across the festival and ensured that little time was wasted in transit time traversing the increasingly muddy site. The main stage was as well set up as could be in the conditions and despite the rain attracted large attendances for its international headliners throughout the course of the two day event. Sunday saw the rain ease off to give attendees a respite on the weather front and naturally made watching SW4’s headline acts a considerably more pleasurable experience.

Line Up

I think it’s fair to say that 2013 was the culmination of an arms race on the booking front (to the advantage of the consumer) with several electronic music festivals seeking to top their rivals by snagging exclusive performances from the scenes biggest names. The blend between superstars and underground heroes is a tricky mix to get right but one I’m pleased to say SW4 undertook with style and panache; with something to offer fans of all electronic genres and levels of familiarity. Trance heads were treated to performances from iconic scene figures Armin Van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold and Paul Van Dyk whilst seasoned tech heads made their way across the festival to see the likes of Planet E boss Carl Craig, Loco Dice Adam Beyer and Scuba  and house lovers checked out the sounds of Carl Cox, Dennis Ferrer and Mark Knight amongst countless others as every major genre catered for. So with so much variety on offer timetabling problems were bound to occur and no amount of programming prowess would have prevented the inevitable set time clashes that would happen. With multiple tents and a series of purpose built stages on offer we thus spent the festival traversing the site hopping from one stage to another to soak in the full SW4 experience whilst avoiding the rain.

Festival Highlights and conclusion

Whilst it would be impossible to give an honorable mention to every DJ who more than delivered at this years SW4 without turning this into an academic essay we can share some of the performances with you that will live particularly long in the memory. As big fans of Carl Craig we were always going to go and check out what the Detroit veteran had to offer and the as always the innovative techno don did not disappoint. Whilst other luminary figures from the Motor City have seen their stars fade over the years Carl’s is a repertoire that seems to be boundless in its imagination as even now his sets make for unpredictable affairs full of invention and contemporary sounds whilst retrofitting that classic edge to his performance.  Speaking of classic it wouldn’t be SW4 without a trademark performance from living legend Carl Cox. Whilst we caught Mr. Cox twice over the course of the festival it will be his back to back performance with Desolat boss Loco Dice that stays with us for years to come. Pulsating from the outset the pair played to a raucously packed tent and wasted no time in getting proceedings suitably jacking to push up energy levels and stave off any potential rain related fatigue. Other excellent performances were delivered by Diynamic’s Solomun, Adam Beyer and the disco loving Tensnake who did his best to ramp up the summery vibes.

Sunday’s bookings saw some equally noteworthy performances with Blond:ish, Scuba and Crazy P all more than delivering on their pre-festival hype. Boys Noize put in a particularly energetic shift even by his own illustrious standards, mixing crashing electro, techno and other genres into one seamless performance. With EDM fans rushing off to catch chart topper Nicky Romero, the cake throwing Steve Aoki and bass heavy duo Knife Party it was two of the scenes legendary figures that impressed us most with Sven Vath and Laurent Garnier stealing the show on the Sunday. Papa Sven delivered one of  his most varied and accomplished sets which considering his iconic status within the scene is quite some compliment and we were pleased to finally catch him in the UK in the flesh. The irrepressible Laurent Garnier was in similar form, with the Frenchman skipping through genres and eras with ease. Garnier has long been one of the capitals favorite Gallic imports and on this showing it is easy to see why. All in all a fantastic weekend of music over in Clapham and all that was missing was the sunshine which we’re sure we’ll be blessed with for next years instalment. See you on the Common next year…

As far as Halloween shows go, it doesn’t get any bigger or better than this. On Saturday 2nd November at the iconic O2 Academy Brixton, an act at the forefront of a burgeoning electronic music movement will take centre stage. That act is Knife Party.

The fearsome duo will be headlining the spooky proceedings for what will be London’s most raucous Halloween show of 2013. As Knife Party’s biggest event in the capital to date and with some very special guests yet to be announced, now is the time to get your fangs into a heavy night of bass-ridden indulgence.

The Haunted House phenomenon begun last year with a US Tour and has since gone on to spook crowds in Miami and Ibiza, with a residency at Amnesia that has taken the Island by storm this summer. Knife Party’s Haunted House has raised the bar for huge parties of music and mayhem, with mind blowing production, an onslaught of beats from the headliners and special guest DJs and unique live performers inside the clubs. Now Knife Party will be unleashing the Haunted House for the first time ever in the UK, providing full sensory overload and a night of mayhem and ‘seizure music’ guaranteed.

Having become a pivotal act in the electronic music world since releasing their first EP ‘100% No Modern Talking’ at the end of 2011, Knife Party have quickly risen to be seen as pioneers at the forefront of the scene. This status has been reinforced with hits such as ‘Antidote’ their collaboration with Swedish House Mafia‘Internet Friends’ which has had over 3.5 million views on YouTube, and their EP ‘Rage Valley’ which broke the Top Ten iTunes chart in the US, UK and Australia. Their latest release ‘Haunted House’, pushed boundaries even further and marked a welcome and typically uncompromising return from the duo that has shocked dancefloors the world over. Expect to hear classic material as well as new sounds at their London performance and some surprises that will turn Brixton’s O2 Academy into an unforgettable Halloween experience for the night.

Joining Knife Party on the bill for this special night is the LA born producer Dillon Francis. Recognised as the protege to Diplo and a pioneer in the Moombahton genre, he has become one of the most in demand DJs on the planet today. Fresh from several performances at festivals this summer, don’t miss this opportunity to see him up close and personal and feel the full force of his bass-heavy selections.

Also joining in on the Halloween festivities are fellow American DJs Flosstradamus. As leaders of the pack in the Trap movement, they found fame through bone breaking remixes of high profile acts such as Sub Focus and Major Lazer. The Hoodie Boyz high energy sets mark them as a ‘must see’ act of 2013, so expect mayhem from the Chicagoans and welcome them to London in true Haunted House fashion.

Long hailed as London’s flagship venue and with a capacity of nearly 5000, the O Academy Brixton is famed for its incredible atmosphere and will be the perfect stage to witness the huge production of the Haunted House and the unstoppable force that is Knife Party.
