The State of the Scene: A Match Made in Heaven – Drum & Bass Meets Grime https://datatransmission.co/blog/the-state-of-the-scene-a-match-made-in-heaven-drum-bass-meets-grime/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 13:55:21 +0000 https://datatransmission.co/?p=71760 Drum & Bass is a constantly changing genre. Drum & Bass is a constantly changing genre. Its current iteration is easily distinguishable from previous ones: within the last couple of years, we’ve seen artists like Sota and Basstripper driving the genre forward, introducing new, ‘futuristic’ sounds to the sonic palate. And, very quickly, songs begin to sound dated. This is not unique to Drum & Bass: it’s inherent to electronic music. But it does mean that often without noticing, we are always witnessing some sort of evolution within the genre. Simultaneously, we are seeing an explosion in the popularity of Drum & Bass, which has tempted artists from a swathe of genres to join the movement. The most recent example is noughties girl group The Sugababes, who, on Friday 30th August, dropped their collaboration with A Little Sound, ‘Situation’ (a rework of the group’s 2000 release ‘Overload’). But over the last few years, it’s rappers that we have most commonly seen collaborating with established Drum & Bass producers. It’s become so common now that you could legitimately declare the emergence of a new sub-genre: the love-child of Drum & Bass and Grime.

Granted, the presence of lyricists within Drum & Bass is by no means a novelty. Traditionally, the culture has always relied on the skills of MCs, especially in live environments, but what we’ve seen in recent years is different. With grime artists joining the scene for the first time, the majority are releasing fully produced songs, with written lyrics throughout. By contrast, MCs have typically improvised live in the rave, giving a different feel to their collaborations with producers.

The single best, and most exciting example of this is Chase & Status’ newest release ‘Backbone’, with Stormzy, arguably the UK’s most famous rapper. Having been teased and rumoured for months, the single was eventually released in early August 2024, and performed, by the rapper himself, in front of 45,000 ravers for the producers’ biggest ever headline show, at the Milton Keynes Bowl the following weekend. The song serves as a showpiece, the pinnacle of the fortunate, developing marriage between Drum & Bass and Grime. Because Stormzy is not the first Grime artist to dabble in Drum & Bass.

The relationship between the two has developed in the space of the last few years, driven by pioneers like P Money, who is now one of the most established rappers in the Drum & Bass world. Gaining notoriety in the early 2010s as a grime MC, P Money first jumped on a Drum & Bass tune in 2019, collaborating with Kanine on ‘Point ‘Em Up’. He went on to team up with British producer Whiney, with whom he has now released a whole host of songs, including October 2023’s collaborative album ‘Streets, Love & Other Stuff’. Consisting of 14 songs, the album represents the coming together of the two influences beautifully – the lead track ‘175 x 140’ is indicative of this clash of cultures, beginning in the tempo typical of Grime and building seamlessly into the faster tempo of Drum & Bass. Throughout the song P brags of his multi-genre ability, and the success of the new sound developing out of the two influences. “175 or 140 I’m a Grime MC on DnB”, he raps. “They ain’t got this sound boy, this is one of a kind. They ain’t ready for this, this is D&B and Grime”, he repeats throughout. The pair have taken their album around the world, touring with Hospitality in Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia.

And P Money seems to have paved the way for other grime artists to follow. Within the same album, high-speed rapper Ocean Wisdom features on ‘Junkyard’, while P appeared on stage with JME, Dizzee Rascal and D Double E during Turno’s Drumsheds set back in November 2023. Clips circulated from the set showing grime legend JME spitting lyrics from one of his biggest songs That’s Not Me (2014).

Within the scene as a whole, there are already a healthy number of well-established lyricists, including some who deviate from the traditional role of an MC. Rappers like Duskee, Bru-C and Degs have strong foundations in the Drum & Bass world, and new artists like Songer (with his recent collaborations with K Motionz, Issey Cross and Bru-C) are joining the fold. But the introduction of those coming from the world of grime is contributing to the development of something special. An aggressive yet skilful twist on the up-tempo beats of Drum & Bass is being produced by adding the Grime flavour to the Drum & Bass recipe: the hard-hitting lyrics of grime laid over the heavy-hitting sounds of DnB is evidently a match made in heaven. It remains to be seen how far this crossover will be taken. While it’s unlikely that a world-famous rapper like Stormzy will double down on his successful DnB debut any time soon, there is certainly the opportunity for this developing sub-genre to grow. P Money will certainly continue to carry the torch as Grime’s ambassador to Drum & Bass, and it’s not out of the question that more artists of his ilk might be tempted to join the movement. Whatever happens, the future of Drum & Bass is exciting and inevitably diverse.

Complete Lineup Unveiled for Spectacular 10th Edition of MADE Festival https://datatransmission.co/event-news/complete-lineup-unveiled-for-spectacular-10th-edition-of-made-festival/ Tue, 21 May 2024 14:11:30 +0000 https://datatransmission.co/?p=70919 MADE Festival announces full lineup for incredible 10-year milestone as the biggest and best music and arts festival in the West Midlands.

The post Complete Lineup Unveiled for Spectacular 10th Edition of MADE Festival appeared first on Data Transmission.

]]>
MADE Festival has announced its full lineup as it reaches an incredible 10-year milestone as the biggest and best music and arts festival in the West Midlands.

Now bringing all acts together for one almighty birthday party from midday to 11pm on Saturday 3rd August in The Digbeth Triangle in the heart of Birmingham, MADE’s 10th delivers a mouthwatering lineup for all fans of drum & bass, bass, UK rap, garage, house, disco and more.

Midlands party people can explore the huge, multi-venue inner city, 10-stage site to enjoy headline sets from Bru-C, Dizzee Rascal, and Bou, and an array of talent including Ewan McVicar, K Motionz, Holy Goof B2B TS7, Jaguar Skills, Skepsis, A Little Sound, Window Kid, 24hr Garage Girls, 4AM Kru, Serum, La La, General Levy, Issey Cross, DJ Q and many more.

Check out last year’s official MADE Festival aftermovie below:

Independent promoters, Weird Science, run club events for over 150,000 people annually and MADE Festival began as their passion project in the creative hub of Digbeth. The intention was to provide a platform for local artists and an opportunity for local businesses. MADE expanded and outgrew Digbeth’s multitude of evolving spaces, moving across the city in 2018 to the greenfield site of Perry Park, where 20,000 festival fans helped put MADE firmly on the national map. After enforced moves to Sandwell Valley, then Wolverhampton Racecourse, MADE Festival made a triumphant return to its spiritual home of The Digbeth Triangle in 2023 and laid the foundations to celebrate 10 years this summer.

Saturday 3rd August sees the perpetually rising star and multi-platinum-selling MC and rapper, Bru-C take over the MADE Stage. With a slew of underground cuts and crossover bangers including his UK top 15 smash ‘No Excuses’ and Nathan Dawe collab ‘Oh Baby’, Bru-C drew huge crowds at his last MADE appearance in 2022 and earned his invite back to headline the 10th edition.

BRIT, MOBO and Mercury Prize-winning MC and rapper, Dizzee Rascal is another MADE fave, tearing it up on his last appearance in 2018 for the 5th edition of the festival. Dizzee led the way for generations of UK rap scoring 5 UK Top 10 albums, 5 UK no.1 singles including ‘Dance Wiv Me’, ‘Holiday’ and possibly the biggest festival tune of all time ‘Bonkers’. He remains as relevant as ever with new album ‘Don’t Take It Personal’ crashing into the charts this year.

Trailblazing star of drum & bass, Bou, steps up to MADE main stage and undoubtedly deserves his slot. With one of the biggest tracks of the year ‘Baddadan’ with Chase & Status to his name, a major label deal, and a slew of massive DJ sets under his belt, Bou can confidently stake a claim as D&B’s next-gen superstar. His big USA / Canada tour will warm him up, just in time to get MADE crowds bouncing.

The MADE Stage also sees quality garage vibes from 24hr Garage Girls, infectious bars from Bru-C collaborator Window Kid, UK jungle from 4AM Kru, sweet vocals from breakout ‘Bittersweet Goodbye’ star Issey Cross, and more.

The house heads are fully catered for on the Raw Stage with in-demand talent, Ewan McVicar dropping a funked-up headline set, while La La is sure to up the tempo and show why she’s recently delivered mixes for Feel My Bicep, Boiler Room, and Radio 1. Look out for some other big artist announcements coming soon for this stage.

Weird Science presents a stage full of drum & bass stars, hosted by Inja, SP:MC, IC3, Carasel, and Comma Dee. Birmingham’s fast rising star K-Motionz headlines as one of the genre’s most exciting artists, in high demand across the globe. His productions including ‘Only You’, ‘High Note’ and last year’s banger ‘Vino Bandit’ have seen his stock rise even higher. Serum is ⅓ of Kings Of The Rollers and knows how to get a crowd jumping. He’ll be dropping his summer anthem ‘Spray Tan’ for the MADE massive. DJ and vocalist A Little Sound is carving her own lane in D&B and going from strength to strength. She lands at MADE as part of a packed summer schedule. Drum & bass legends Dillinja and Randall step up for a special MADE 10th Anniversary B2B set, while rising star Kara shows she deserves her Drum & Bass Award for Best Female Producer.

The 02:31 Stage sees another very special B2B, this time between the mighty Holy Goof and TS7. Expect major sonic fireworks. Skepsis performs, continuing his rise after slamming into the UK charts with ‘Rave Out’ and ‘Green And Gold’. This stage is guaranteed to be jumping as DJ Q, Girls Next Door, and Burga Boy all line up for turntable duty.

A real treat is the House Of Legends & Thirty Present Fish Tales Stage where some bonafide legends of the scene are ready to showcase their skills. Bringing the positive vibes from TikTok, Fish56Octagon plays alongside hard dance pioneer Fergie for a world exclusive back to back set. Very special guest Jaguar Skills brings his ‘tribute to The Prodigy’ set to MADE – this one should not be missed. When Utah Saints step up to the decks the crowds know that something good is going to happen. Plump DJs land at MADE with their unique brand of beats and breaks mixing old school with the new.

There’s plenty more jungle and D&B as RCE Presents 10 Years Of Jungle Cakes. Headlining this stage is the one and only General Levy who never disappoints. Another highlight is the 10 year B2B special – Deekline B2B Ed Solo B2B Benny Page. This trio guarantees the highest quality tune selection. Special guest Bryan Gee will dig deep into his coveted record collection to drop a massive jungle set.

MADE Festival continues to heavily support local promoters and talent, providing opportunities for stage takeovers and connections to local clubbers. The 10th edition of MADE sees a range of styles and genres with something to get everyone dancing. The 2Tekky x Serious Selectas Stage brings a host of UKG, wobbling basslines, and breakbeat NRG. There’s a mix of house, tech, and minimal goodness at the CNTRL x ESVDRA x SHUBZ Stage, while the RE:CORD x Discotech Stage takes an underground trip into house. Duck DnB x Selecta bring some scorching drum & bass with a selection of up and coming local stars.

Digbeth Dining Club are on hand to ensure a quality selection of delicious food options from local traders, and expect some seriously talented graffiti artists from the region to be on hand to create art live throughout the day.

MADE Festival knows better than anyone how to make the most of The Digbeth Triangle’s unique mix of outdoor and indoor spaces. From midday through to 11pm, the whole area will be alive with music, arts and the sound of people having a good time. MADE Festival turns 10 and everything is ready for the celebration of a decade

Back in 2023, A Little Sound burst onto the UK dance music scene like a firecracker. She was everywhere, hitting up over 30 festivals worldwide and dropping collabs with big names like Hedex and Rudimental. And to cap it off, she snagged a spot with Ministry Of Sound, dropping the hit single ‘Back To Back (B2B)’ that kept folks grooving for a solid 7 weeks on Radio 1‘s C List. Not to mention, she got some love from Kiss Dance and Capital Dance, too.

Now in 2024, A Little Sound’s still making waves. Teaming up with Disrupta, they’ve cooked up ‘Escape The Lights’ – a Drum & Bass jam that’s pure gold. A Little Sound’s vocals? Absolutely mesmerizing. And Disrupta’s production? Tight as you like, showcasing why he’s on the rise in the DnB world.

Standing at just 5 feet 2 inches, A Little Sound might be small in stature, but she’s got dreams big enough to fill a stadium. She’s been killing it in the Drum & Bass scene, dropping hooks that stick and DJ sets that light up the dance floor. She’s been the voice behind some of the genre’s biggest hits, collabing with heavyweights like Kanine, Friction, and Technimatic. And let’s not forget her debut EP on Bristol label Born On Road – that’s some serious talent right there.

And she’s not stopping anytime soon. Singer, songwriter, DJ — she’s doing it all. After blowing minds with an epic live stream during the Stay At Home Festival, she’s been booking gigs left and right, from Glastonbury to Tomorrowland. The world’s her stage, and she’s owning it.

And let’s not forget about Disrupta. This guy’s no stranger to success, with chart-toppers on labels like Hospital Records and V Recordings. He’s been turning heads and taking names, earning himself the title of ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ at the Drum&Bass Awards 2021. With talent like his, the sky’s the limit.

“Remember Boomtown is only Boomtown because we’re all together!” It was the words of children’s TV royalty Dick & Dom after Boomtown’s opening ceremony that encapsulated the Boomtown 2022 experience in one sentence. We were finally together again at the Matterley Bowl, the sun was shining, and spirits were high for what was one of 2022’s highly anticipated events. Three years ago, the festival city closed its doors, and Boomtown citizens waited patiently to get back inside of its magical walls after a long hiatus due to Covid-19. The day finally arrived, and the festival’s return did not disappoint.

The main change this year was the festival’s reset to Chapter One – a change saying goodbye to the eleven-year-long storyline Boomtown had previously built. It wasn’t just a reset of the storyline (an interactive element of the festival we’ve come to love over the years), it was a reset of the festival layout we knew. This year, Boomtown condensed its operations into the area previously known as the downtown bowl. This meant no Lion’s Den, no Psy Forest and a lot less walking.

People were sceptical about what this meant for the festival experience. Would it be too small? Would it be the same Boomtown experience we loved? This was the first thought many had when arriving on the Wednesday. Looking down on the festival city from the downtown campsite was strange. It looked tiny and you could hear murmurs of people worrying about it being too busy at peak times. But this wasn’t the case.

Boomtown 2022 promised the new-look city, despite being smaller, would be more imaginative and immersive than ever before. They weren’t lying. Somehow, you still managed to get lost wandering the maze of streets joining the districts, there were actors everywhere bringing flair to the city, and the set design was magnificent. Even the close proximity stages, which looked like they would have sound bleeding into one another, all sounded incredible. While I heard many people complaining before the city opened, I heard barely any complaints once the city closed.

If anything, people were more concerned with the heat and dust than the changes to the festival. Usually, at Boomtown, we’re used to torrential rain (who remembers SHY FX followed by Jungle Cakes at Lion’s Den 2018?) but this year, everyone swapped ponchos for sun cream because there was rarely a cloud in the sky. While this did bring its struggles, it created a wonderful backdrop for Boomtown’s colours to thrive.

This came to the fore on Thursday when street parties popped up across the outskirts of the city. Huge rigs, good music and blue skies – what more could you want? With Born On Road and Rumble in The Jungle running a pop-up Elektrical Soundsytem stage, and Dubtendo throwing a separate one in conjunction with Swing & Bass, there was a party atmosphere in the air to kick-start the first full day of the festival.

The Dubtendo street party set the tone for the festival with its good energy. From people donning Mario costumes and mushroom hats to others waving Dubtendo signs – and not to forget the fat rig that shook your body to the core – the party was well underway here. JFB’s vinyl scratching and Foor’s mash-up bassline were highlights of the afternoon, with the latter artist bringing about a beautiful moment when he played Rozalla’s ‘Everybody’s Free’. With the sun beating down and arms waving in the air, it was a feel-good moment reminding everyone of the freedom Boomtown represents, especially this year. We were finally back at the Matterley Bowl dancing together again. Bliss.

It’s a feeling of togetherness that became a theme of the festival experience. Titled ‘The Gathering’, this year’s Boomtown was all about the community coming back together to connect and dance. Because of that, there was positive energy oozing out of the attendees, artists and workers. From food stalls battling it out with each other blaring tunes while punters decided which stall to dance in front of, to attendees lugging water spray cans and guns around the site just so they could cool off fellow attendees mid-dance.

This infectious energy carried on into Friday, which was the day when the city really came alive. All roads led to the official opening ceremony in the afternoon, which took place on both main stages – Origin (a towering industrial structure for all things drum and bass), and Grand Central (a retro-looking stage bringing Lion’s Den flavour). Boomtown’s opening shows always pack an important message, and this year’s was around unity in the world. There were #FreePalestine flags waving and lyrics around being “all together, all races, all sexualities”. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Boomtown opening ceremony without vibrant theatrics (especially the performers dangling from a crane above the stage).

While the opening show was incredible, what followed was just as memorable – Dick & Dom playing a cameo set to warm up for Arrested Development. There had been rumours flying around earlier in the day of Dick & Dom showing up, and it prompted excitement in the campsites with people screaming “BOGIES”. This was made better when Dick & Dom came on stage and shouted the famous phrase.

For many of us, watching Dick & Dom be silly on TV was part of our upbringing, so to see them on stage blasting bassline and Drum & Bass was a surreal experience – particularly when they worked the crowd with Kleu’s ‘Rudy, A Message To You’. It set us up nicely for what was going to be a festival weekend filled with good feels and plenty of hearty tunes.

Heavy music was the main course on Boomtown’s menu this year. For the first time, the organisers kept the line-up secret until days before, which was a move met with criticism. If you were more into your house or techno or hoping for huge headliners, then you will have been disappointed. But if you love heavy bass music, then you would have been ecstatic at the likes of Born On Road, 24 Hour Garage Girls, Ed Rush b2b Optical, Dutty Moonshine, Sherelle and DJ Marky.

Boomtown always reiterated this year’s line-up wouldn’t be filled with huge acts due to the financial loss that occurred during Covid, and if anything, this encouraged the team to dig deeper with their music programming for what was arguably the most diverse line-up they’ve had. From more females than ever before to acts of all colours, races and identities, it was a joy to see so much thought go into this year’s programming.

Drum & Bass heads were especially happy with the line-up as there was a phenomenal billing of artists and collectives flying the flag for the genre. Friday felt like a love letter to the underground bass music scene with The Grid, Hidden Woods and Origin stages all proudly pushing Drum & Bass and Jungle flavours to thousands of ravers. It was the latter of those stages that stood out with a Critical Music takeover featuring Kasra, Enei, Halogenix, Bryan Gee b2b DJ Die and more. As a towering behemoth of a stage looking weathered and distressed, Origin was the perfect setting for a genre of music that has been through the mill over the years, but always comes out on top.

As the weekend hit, the feeling of celebration that had been building reached a climax with Boomtown’s official celebration fancy dress day. While many didn’t bother because of the heat, those who did ran with the theme in spectacular Boomtown fashion – the actors especially.

As important as music is to Boomtown, the theatrics are just as vital. This year, there was something happening everywhere you looked. Pop-up moving mechanical stages with a DJ inside, a band of people dressed in junk parts doing the YMCA with attendees, the little room in the Metropolis district where you could sit on the sofa ‘playing’ Xbox while listening to an intense loop of gabba – the city was a full-on sensory experience. I especially loved the actors at Area 404. By day, they were spraying people from above with water guns, and by night, they were shooting fire (not at us, thankfully).

It’s these random moments that define the Boomtown experience (and why the festival didn’t need to release a line-up beforehand). You always know you’re going to be immersed in a weird and wonderful world when you step into Boomtown’s city. Those following the storyline will have known all about this as they walked into random rooms, got asked to do questionable things by actors, and often were sent on wild goose chases to find clues.

If you weren’t following the storyline on Saturday then you were probably catching some of the incredible acts on the bill. The pick of the bunch was Fabio & Grooverider & The Outlook Orchestra at Grand Central. We first saw Fabio & Grooverider perform with The Outlook Orchestra at London’s Southbank Centre earlier this year, but this festival performance was one that was three years in the making, and a moment Grooverider admitted he felt “nervous” about.

As early pioneers of jungle and D&B, it was brilliant to see them reeling through the history of the genre in a format where the duo narrated the timeline and its developments along the way. The live orchestra was the star of the show, performing swine-tingling renditions of classics including Makoto’s ‘Golden Girl’ (with sublime live vocals from Cleveland Watkiss), and Chase & Status’ ‘In Love’, which Jenna G performed live alongside epic sax solos.

One thing I noticed during this set was the crowd energy. People were dancing like crazed beings expressing themselves however they felt fit. This is Boomtown. People oozing free-flowing energy in the dance like it was their last festival. Maybe it was the influences they were under, or maybe it was the fact we were witnessing special moments all festival that called for raw emotion. Saturday night was full of them, as across sight on Origin, Noisia were performing an emotional final UK set before parting ways. It was a performance we’d been building anticipation for all weekend and the production was fitting for the occasion with lasers and flames popping off from all angles.

I was disappointed only to see Thys behind the decks when you’d think all three members would have been there for their UK send-off. Because of that, the set was more of an experimental journey than a full-on Noisia showdown, but it was still a special occasion. Thys jumping on the mic at the end to say “And now it’s over… Thank you so much for all of these years” was a tear-jerking moment that will live long in people’s memories.

The final day of Boomtown was filled with just as many big moments to enjoy. Whether it was DJ Marky & GQ shutting down Origin when Marky scratched to DJ Hazard’s ‘Bricks Don’t Roll’ – one of the festival’s best moments that had the crowd going nuts as he spans with the vinyl deck in his hands, or DLR going b2b with Break for a hefty Sunday send-off, there were some outstanding musical moments to experience.

But if you weren’t into D&B, then you were probably watching Kool & The Gang at Grand Central. It was a beautiful show you don’t get the opportunity to see often in a lifetime as they reeled through classics sparking nostalgia amongst the crowd. When ‘Celebration’ played, there was a sea of people on shoulders and everyone was singing along. It was the perfect way to close a festival return we were all celebrating.

As always, Boomtown ended with a closing ceremony on the two main stages. Origin’s saw A Little Sound and take centre stage for what was an epic finale with hearty basslines, while also relaying an important message about the planet and being connected as one. Some people clearly didn’t get the message though – leaving masses of tents and rubbish behind after the festival closed. Sustainability is at the heart of Boomtown’s mission, so to see so much disregard for it was a big shame, especially considering the messages of togetherness throughout the event.

Here’s to hoping Chapter Two: The Twin Trail brings the same positive energy and big moments we experienced this year, but with more care for Boomtown’s values.

SVP teams up with A Little Sound for their debut release for Audio Rehab – You & Me.

Purveyors of deep, infectious tech house fused with a funky disco feelgood atmosphere, this newly formed Bristol-based duo believe now the time has come for them to join forces and combine their complimenting music styles after solo successes performing around the world and at various major festivals.

‘You & Me’ is a raspy bass-led vocal groover. Ethereal vocals float above the crisp percussion and gritty low end like a joyous cloud of emotion. Playful sonics and Gararg-y bass tones add style and sophistication. The track is available as a full vocal, instrumental and shorter radio edit.

We premiere ‘You & Me’ today, check it out below and grab it here.
