MeToo Music, an activist group within the music industry, is set to release a powerful short film titled “When The Music Ends” that highlights the pervasive issue of sexual abuse within club culture, particularly affecting marginalized groups.
Based on real-life accounts from anonymous contributors, this five-minute film follows the individual stories of three people from some of the most at-risk groups identified by the Electronic Music Inclusion Initiative (EMII) study, demonstrating how deeply rooted these experiences are in nightlife spaces and the lasting impact on survivors.
Premiering in Berlin on October 23rd, the film is part of MeToo Music’s #ForTheMusic campaign and has been made possible with the support of industry giants such as Beatport, Pioneer, Safer Dance, Ravemore, and Reprise Talent Agency.
Produced by Berlin-based Spilled Milk and directed by Mo Kanaan, the film stars Luna Baptiste, Frederic Balonier, Justus Riesner, Vincent Ercolani, and Lujain Mustafa. “When The Music Ends” offers an unfiltered look at what a typical night in a club can entail for those vulnerable to harassment or exploitation, shining a light on the realities faced by many nightlife patrons and workers.
The film draws inspiration from the EMII’s extensive study, which gathered over 600 reports of abuse incidents from 28 countries. The study found that women aged 26-35, particularly from the UK, Germany, and the US, were most likely to report abuse, though fear of retaliation or disbelief prevents many from coming forward. Incidents often intersect with gender and sexual orientation, with a significant impact on women of color. These accounts reveal that microaggressions, unwanted contact, and other forms of harassment are alarmingly common across clubs, concerts, and workplaces, showing the critical need for structural change and proactive intervention in nightlife culture.
“When The Music Ends” not only bears witness to these painful realities but also emphasizes the importance of intervention, empowering audiences to recognize and challenge abuse. The film aims to foster an industry-wide dialogue about respect, accountability, and the collective role in ensuring safe, inclusive spaces for everyone.
