Kasra’s 3 Favourite Record Labels

Share

Kasra founded Critical Music, a D&B label based in London in 2002. It is widely regarded as being at the forefront of the modern underground scene. A passionate curator and DJ he has grown the label from humble beginnings to one of the most respected imprints in the genre.

“I started a label because I wanted to be involved in the music I love, to push new artists, new sounds and to present exciting ideas.”
Kasra

Over the years, the label has released music from artists across the scene, showcasing a diverse and vital roster covering all angles of the music that he loves so much.

Not content with a release schedule bursting with future classics and his own rigorous DJ’ing schedule, the label boasts its own branded club nights. Critical Sound travels the globe with the Critical family and specially selected guests. These guests bring their own interpretation of the Critical Sound. As a DJ, Kasra has done what only a select few people around the world have managed in their careers; being asked to mix FabricLive62, which went on to be one of the most successful Drum & Bass mix albums of that year.

Since then Kasra has continued to DJ sets and play label events throughout the UK and the rest of the world.

“Kasra is a gatekeeper to what is under the surface in drum & bass. He does what he does with passion and care. He is a kindred spirit.” Goldie

Here he chooses his 3 Favourite labels which are not Critical Music…obviously!

31 Records

The first of two D&B labels, the seminal 31 was a huge influence on me both falling in love with drum and bass and wanting to start a label. Always buy on site, always offering something different, plus they released this tune which in my opinion is untouchable

Metalheadz

Similarly to 31, Headz is just pure foundation. Inspiring from the outset, and never afraid to take chances. A label that has released so many classic tunes it’s daunting as a label owner.

Sub Pop

Sub Pop, for those who don’t know, is an alternative independent label based out of Seattle. Famous for first releasing Nirvana records and the epicentre of the grunge movement. This was the first label I followed and made me appreciate the importance of the label in how music is presented and curated. 30 years on it still innovates and excites.
